This reminds me of a more amusing incident last week - I pointed out whilst passin another cyclist that their rear lamp was being obscured intermittently by his bag. The guy was greatful enough, but 100 yards down the road I run over a bump, my rear lamp flies out of its bracket and hits the deck. He reached it first, picked it up and and handed it back to me with a grin saying "I guess we are level now". Funny :)

The rest of the week has sucked, I broke the frame on one bike on Sunday, leaving me without a spare, came down with a cold, so felt unable to ride my favourite longer "scenic" commutes, had a puncture on Tuesday and broke a spoke on the good bike yesterday. It can only get better. Tommorrow I'm off to the bike shops to search for a shiny new road bike frame.

Today was great. After 25 work-days of riding, I'm starting to feel a little stronger as a cyclist. Although I have learned to cut back on the unnecessary weight. I used to take for granted the kinds of things I would keep in my backpack, books, pens, extra stuff that just seems to collect. I use my pack for hiking and the occasional orienteering event, so I get some crossover crap.

Now I question everything that I'm lugging. Does that thumb-compass REALLY need to be in there? Do I need all these energy bars? I'm enjoying the iterative improvements with each commute. Between the lighter backpack(which i now hold phone/keys/etc) and the panniers, the commute is logistically getting simpler.

This morning I brought the camera so I could contribute to the commute photo thread but forgot to pack the usb cable. D'oh! So, I'll upload the pix from home. In the meantime, I'm just going to pedal home quickly, safely, and incident free.

32F & dense, wet fog at 6AM today. Very quiet commute in to work in light traffic. It took all morning to burn away the fog, but we had a sunny day & it was 48 for the ride home.

Beautiful ride in to work at 11:30 this morning. Wore my windbreaker since the return trip was supposed to be quite nippy. However, I "had" to meet my girlfriend at the pub next door to my work this evening instead of riding home, we carpooled. ;) I'll catch a ride to my work tomorrow (got the day off) and take the long way home.

I commuted the whole trip to work - almost nine miles - and it was simply *beautiful*! It was about 60 degrees F (15.5 C) out, clear as a bell, and I saw a gorgeous sunset! The temp made the ride very easy, because I never overheated at all!

I pulled up to a light, and a couple of motorcycles pulled up next to me. One shouted, "wanna race?" I laughed and told him I didn't want to embarrass him! ;)

Before I started the ride, I was tired from lack of sleep, no energy, and thinking I'd never make the whole trip. But after getting a start and warmed up, I changed my mind - and glad I did! :D

Wow the whole 9miles...that's great. I remember you mentioned that you usually do about 7. Good go'n!

One way I go is only seven miles; but there's several large hills that just wear me out! This other path is longer at 8.2-8.5 miles, but the hills aren't as bad. Last night's commute was longer (8.8 miles) because I made a detour to go to a drugstore. No place outside to lock up to safely, so I walked the bike inside and down the aisles with me! Nobody even raised an eyebrow at me. :D

clear and calm and 28 °F. today was the first weekday since they reopened the road south of the office park where i work, and i expected traffic to be worse than it's been in recent months, but i guess not many drivers have figured it out yet. i especially don't like the 18-wheelers on that 2-lane, no-shoulder road. but it is great to be outside, all the same.

Had to drive in this morning so I could drop my girlfriend's car off for a timing belt change. I haven't driven to work for about a month, and I couldn't believe how much I can't stand it now. I don't know how the steel cagers do it every day, I felt my blood pressure rising steadily, and the traffic wasn't even that bad.
Good thing is, after I drop the car off at the shop this afternoon I'm cycling home. It doubles the length of my normal commute and it's a route I've never taken before. I can't wait!

Good Day! Awesome ride...there was supposed to be a headwind but I didn't even notice it. If I had driven the tin can I can just imagine how I would feel. It was -3 with just enough of a skiff of snow to make it slick. On the bike, I just took my time and enjoyed the ride. I am developing a low tolerance level for cagers who are always grumpy. I appreciate having a non-alcoholic "glow on" from nothing but my own endorphins.

47F/8C Mostly clear skies and very light winds. I felt energetic so took a route with some short steep climbs.

Those of you commuting after sunset, keep an eye out for the "Northern Lights." They should be brilliant for the next 2 nights. The Leonids Meteor Shower will occur this week as well.

It would be cool to see commuting photos with the Aurora behind your bike! :D

Good ride. Didn't get much sleep last night. Awoke with a headache. I rode and the headache eventually went away and about 4 mile into the ride the nerochemicals started kicking in. I feel good!!!

Didn't get much sleep last night either, must be the cold weather. I pushed a 17 mph head wind all the way to work this morning, a very humbling ride, I should get a free ride home tonight though, the wind is still blowing.

Strange day for me... I came around a corner just outside of downtown Seattle and noticed a police car with the lights on in the middle of an intersection and thought huh... As I got closer I saw 4 more cars with out their lights on parked in a Chinese restaurant parking lot. As I pulled up to the light behind another bike and he said “Wow, you don’t see cops with their guns pulled everyday…” I looked over and noticed that there was an officer standing there with his gun pulled. My first thought was that they must not have liked the service… :) Then I thought it might be a good idea to find a different way into the city off of the I-90 Bridge. And this is probably not a good place to be sitting on a bike… Finally when the light turned green I rode across the intersection and notice the car with the lights on was right behind another car. As I passed I saw that office holding someone’s hand through the window of the car.

Then again maybe I should get a smaller digital camera…

Ah yes, after a wonderful weekend and we are back to our normal temps for this time of year today. I had a nice ride in, the weather is a little gloomy but dry, I don't think we are going to top 36F/2C today. When you're dressed for it you can still have a great ride.

converged with 3 other bikers this morning at a choke point crossing a major street (Glenmore and 5th St (if you are in calgary)). nice temp, little wind.

The weatherman says its 69F right now! I'm leaving work early for an extended ride while the sun and temperature is up!

Man! It felt like summer out there this afternoon! I did a hilly 20 miles. Sunny and 69F in the middle of November! Ahhh, Life is good! :D

Very cold. 32F plus a 40MPH downhill sprint equals very chilly fingers, toes, and face. Must remember to bring the winter boots I recently bought along with the balaclava, and winter gloves..... Brrrrrrr.....

Just a lovely day to ride in to work. Slight breeze, temp that had to be around 67-68F, calling in "sick" would have been a good option if I were not so darn honest. Ride back this evening at 9:00 was much cooler, glad that I wore my work shirt under the long sleeve poly cycling shirt. Rode on the drops the last 5 miles to see how my back felt doing this; no problem at all.

We had a beautiful weekend but this morning it was foggy and 46F at 5AM. Started my commute about 15 minutes early & had a quiet ride in. I only encountered a few cars. I left for the day at lunchtime & it was only up to about 50F, the fog had thinned some but didn't burn off until this evening. Finally found the right size stem for my project bike & was able to install it this afternoon. Don

Well on the way home, I was riding past a line of cars waiting at a stop light, and I nailed the sideview mirror of some big SUV that was a bit farther to the right than I estimated, with my shoulder. I apologized but I think it really pissed the driver off. Ah well, I hate SUVs.

havent posted here in a while, but this morning was great. No wind, brisk 29 degrees, no traffic...ah, a cyclists paradise :)

Absolutely Amazing ride in to work this morning. My ride usually takes around 30 minutes... today It took about an hour!

The Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) were the most vivid and active I've seen in years! At times they filled the entire sky. I stopped 3 or 4 times to take it in, then decided to find a bench in a darker area of the park (to escape some of the city's light polution). I layed on my back watching the increadible show. I stood up to leave a couple of times, but just couldn't... I ended up on the bench again. I watched for about 15 to 20 minutes. The sky was perfectly clear with just enough ice crystals in the air to create a cool glow around the crescent moon. As I was laying on the bench watching the show, I saw 3 shooting stars, one that lasted quite a while & seemed to break up half way through it's flight.

This is one of the reasons our licence plates tag line is "Land of Living Skies"

By the time I got to work the Northern Lights had faded & all but dissapeared... was I ever glad I took the time to stop and take them in!

And they think I'm crazy to bike to work in the winter!?

they had us on the alert for northern lights down here but i saw none, sad to say.

this morning was brisk (27 °F) and clear with high clouds moving in. last night the gingko on brooks street dropped its leaves; it looked like a giant yellow paintball had splattered onto the sidewalk, the extension and the street. the group of osage orange trees on state (just south of the tracks, by the golf course) had released a fusillade of fruits overnight as well, and i almost wiped out maneuvering around and through them. autumn! i love it...

I had never knowingly seen the Northern Lights. Thanks to N7CZin MT's post yesterday I looked to the Norther sky on my commute... Breath-taking! :D I'm not good with words so I won't be able to give the splendor the discription it deserves! I was kicking myself that I didn't have a camera with me. I think I'm going to get one of those $20.00 digital cameras to take with me every where I go.

I probably shouldn't have ridden in this morning. I have been nursing a cold/flu for 2 weeks, I was progressively getting better until Sunday, I felt the worst yesterday… but I have spent entirely too much time off the bike so I rode anyway!

It was my first ride with the heavy, noisy Nokians, on top of the 2 week hiatus and being sick… My average speed dropped 4.5mph! I figured I would be slow, but I spent way to much time in my Granny gear! :(

Lethargic ride in this morning. Felt strong yesterday, but I've been out of town a lot lately and haven't done much commuting, so I guess it's just the muscles waking up again.

That being said, it's been great on the bike the past two days... around 45 deg F when I leave home, warming to around 50 by the time I get to work. Thanks to the end of daylight savings, I'm no longer starting off in the dark, though my ride home is definitely dark! Fitted a 10W light last night, which should make things a bit better. Most of my ride is on well lit streets and not many busy ones, so hopefully this should be enough... for now!

Besides being cold (29F) the ride in this morning was beautiful. Clear skies, and clean fresh air. Real nice.
