Thursday was the best weather all week but I had a lunch meeting & couldn't cycle. Today it was 52F & mostly clear at 6AM, still fair at lunchtime but we had thunder showers late in the afternoon which brought us some brief downpours.

Commute sucked...was at the pub 'til wayyyy late, rode into work in my buddies SUV. God why...at least I got my team jersey in mail when I got home...JUST IN TIME TO MAKE ME FEEL GUILTY!

Sunday=30+mi in pennance

This past week I commuted 4 times! Last week was 3 times in one week, I am hoping to make it in on the bike all 5 days next week. I have realized that there is a headwind going both ways, which I can't quite figure out... The wind must change direction during the day. I am going to have to start living at work, and working at home to take advantage of the wind! ;)

Rogerinchrist 09-18-04 08:16 AM

Yesterday's ride in was kinda cool, 45F & moist. long sleeved T with a short sleeved T over it & shorts ( think summer will be here soon). Suppose I should start thinking about getting some leg warmers? Afternoon ride was 70 ish & rushed. Beauty eh?

I think you'll find that depends on the speed of the wind. If you're riding at 25km/h, but the wind is only 10km/h, you'll probably feel the wind on your face even when it is "behind" you. However, if you then immediately turn around and ride the other way, you'll soon notice the difference. Of course, the wind does sometimes change direction, which makes it even more fun.

The wind is definitely changing directions at the end of my day on most days. It has been very windy here lately too, as in small trees bending over pretty far. I had wondered if it was my speed, but even at intersections and stop lights, it is still bending, and like I said, the trees are blowing like crazy too.
Ah well... Guess it is all good in the end as long as it stays warm!

On another note...I biked out to visit my parents today, and my father asked me what I was going to do when winter came. I replied, "Get studded tires", to which my step-mother responded, "I want to run over people who ride their bikes in the winter"!!!!!!!!!!!
I didn't even bother trying to explain it to her. I just asked her to please not run me over! :p

Michel Gagnon 09-19-04 01:03 AM

Could she be joking? Or jealous?

Anyway, from personal experience, shop early, especially if you want 700c studded tires. Last Winter, I had a hard time finding a shop that would even want to order mine! 26" tires are a bit easier to find, mostly because of MEC.

P.S. Try to stick to Nokians if you can afford them. Very good traction and carbide studs that will last many many years.

I would have just said "please do, I could use the money!".

19 degrees C this morning, but feeling more like 29 in the humidity. I was recovering a little from the stomach bug I somehow picked up on last night's ride. :( Strangely, I felt OK after I rode the first 5km or so easy to warm up. Go figure.

We're just getting into a season when there is a headwind out to work in the morning, and a headwind back home again in the afternoon. Land breeze headed for the ocean in the morning; seabreeze headed for the land in the afternoon. Sometimes I wish for my shorter commute that was in the opposite direction coming off the bridge, but I rationalise it by saying that it makes my legs stronger.

As to your other post about studded tyres, it's something I'd like to try just for the challenge, but we don't get enough snow to warrant it. Good luck to you for committing to cycling in the winter.

Ed Holland 09-20-04 04:20 AM

Yikes - Damn windy this morning... and its getting more unsettled and rainy by the minute. The seasons, they are a changing :)

I've taken to wheeling the bike into our building, rather than lock it up outside. Well, I say lock, but I discovered that my trusty U-lock was highly susceptable to the pen trick that has become such a focus of attention recently. B****cks!

Cheers,

Ed

The first ride of the year for the shoe covers and lobster gloves, winter in in new england, I didn't check the temp but it felt like it's in the fortys. Just a little over a month from now the studded tires come out of storage. My ride in this morning was fast with no wind and light traffic, the end of the week is forcasted to be nice so fall commuting should be great.

madhouse 09-20-04 07:29 AM

Nasty head wind on fatigued legs from yesterdays ride. I am grateful for my aero bars, else I would still be pedl’n!

phamby 09-20-04 08:10 AM

almost got ran over this morning by a van. The lady slams on her brakes and swerves. The she pulls over about .5 mile ahead and gets out and tells me sorry, but she didn't see me. We were both heading into the sun. I told her to put down her visor or wear some sunglasses. Either way it's negligence on her part. I was riding couple feet from the curb as always. Heak, maybe her windshield was too dirty or something. oh well, I made it to work safely.

Zin 09-20-04 09:01 AM

33F with a stiff north wind this mornig. Driving rain/snow mix pelting me in the face most of the way. Dressed just right on the top, but a little under on the legs. They never did reall warm up.

oboeguy 09-20-04 09:17 AM

OMG this must be National Idiot Driver Day. Part of my commute involves a harrowing 2+ mile ride on Broadway in upper Manhattan. For some reason, three morons almost hit me today. Now when I say "almost hit me" I mean more so than in the usual sense of riding on B'way during rush hour. My voice is a little hoarse from the primal screams I let out when one guy pulled out from double parking, and two other idiots tried to left turn in front of me (those are the worst).

Good ride today, other than that. Chilly, though. Should have worn tights today, brrrrr!

robncindi 09-20-04 09:38 AM

Excellent ride in this morning, weather in the 60's with a nice headwind!
This will be my first week commuting every day! Although, I still have my car here at work just in case. Glad I have a junker car I can leave at work all week.

Rob

Cold, Cold, Cold this morning. No snow yet, but plenty of frost. I gave up wearing the Tevas this morning, as my toes have been getting pretty chilly. Lots of fog this morning too, made the ride interesting. I wasn't quite sure how visible I was in it, so I turned on my blinky in the back and hoped for the best. No close calls, so I guess all was well. Here are a few pics of my ride home this afternoon, (sunny!!!) and one of the fog this morning. The leaves are starting to turn up here in Vermont, so the rides are getting very pretty. Enjoy!

Nice pics CommuterKat. The leaves are starting to change here too. I had a nice commute this morning, came in shorts again... man, I can't believe it, I know these days are numbered. Took the long way in, did a river run at lunch time and plan on taking the long way home... even though there is a pretty stong wind out there. This is great.

Rogerinchrist 09-20-04 03:18 PM

Glad to hear that those of you with close calls are makin' it in safe!

Extra tired this mornin', not sure why. Left late but made ok. time. Ever try sleeping on a bike? It don't work!! I wonder how those guys that do the RAAM can ride all night for OVER A WEEK!!! Well anyway, the rides were rather uneventful, I didn't get any sleep or crash. Near 60F this morn' and about 70 or so now with a South breeze.

ollo_ollo 09-20-04 05:50 PM

51F at 6AM, so foggy out I had to remove my glasses. The fog burned off during the morning leaving us with a sunny day & light breeze. Perfect commuting weather this afternoon. I had time to get some of the wiring done on the battery/cargo & lightbox I'm building for the Winter rainy season. Don

Zin 09-20-04 09:50 PM

Nice pics Kat! Thanks for sharing those!

Good ride home. Temp just under 50F with light winds. The smell of winter in the air!

spidercyclist 09-20-04 10:31 PM

Nice ride in and home ,long day ,no help at work.
Nice ride all ways makes up for a bad day at work .
Thank s....

cicadashell 09-21-04 07:36 AM

nice to be back on the bike after a little traveling last week. i shudder in sympathy with those of you riding in frigid weather; here, it has been almost unspeakably gorgeous for the past week. sunny and dry all day, with clear nights and dry nights leading to cool mornings. only the occasional headwind on the way home, just to kind of test me a little.

i will be needing to get a bigger gear for my bike, however. yesterday i timed myself on the flats by the airfield and was pedaling at about 120, which is really unnecessary. keeps the appetite up, i suppose...

ridealot 09-21-04 08:25 AM

Cool ride in this morning. Supposed to be a beautiful week for commuting. 45 more miles and I reach 2000 commute miles for the year! Woo Hoo!
