Awsome commute for most of sept. so far. We've been having almost only sunny days, with temps around 12-16C in the morning (Montreal, Quenec). This morning I had a 15km wind in my back so I made really good speed. It's fun to get to work right after a nice workout. I feel so awake.

This was my first week trying to commute daily. I made it all but today. The totals for the week were 72.8 miles (9.1 miles each way), avg speed 14.6 mph, top speed 38.7. The weather all week was super nice highs in the low 90's and mornings were mid 70's. I'll have to see how the commute goes when the weather turns.

Well, we just topped 60F and it's 3pm, it's been a gloomy day but my commute has been nice. Colinm and Madhouse said there was nasty wind this morning... hmmmm, I guess I didn't notice it... I did notice the drizzle. Oh well, I must have been in a different world in my head this morning... it's good though.

Ditto to the above quote. Amazine weather here in Vermont, and amazine commutes. Foliage gets better every day around here and traffic has been uncharacteristically (sp?) polite! Took the long way home again today, and feel on top of the world!

September has been an odd weather month, Green Bay TV station says that it's the 2nd dryest September on record and 15F degrees above normal. Kinda makin' up for the cool wet spring I guess. Nearly 70F this morn with a light tail wind, NICE. Sunny & breezy 15-20mph headwind this afternoon. About half way home I met one of the few other cycle commuters that I see daily. So I decided to turn around & introduce myself, turns out to be someone I used to go to highschool with some (25?) years ago. So I rode the wind with him back to my starting point, them headed for home against the wind all over again! Boy, we cyclists do odd things don't we?
Well the week of commuting aint over just yet, gotta go one more time tommorrow.

Bike lane was littered with walnuts today and the crows that were trying to break them open. Very surreal. Almost killed a poor squirrel. The crows, however, knew better and just threw nuts at me from the safe distance of an overhead powerline.

My boss tells me today, "We'll compensate you for your car's commuting mileage." Car? Gas? Um... maybe you'd buy some Koolaid for my waterbottle instead?

BenyBen 09-24-04 06:24 PM

He should compensate for your morning and evening meals. heh!

45F @ 6AM, 72F PM. It was a perfect sunny day, so I rode my Bianchi Trofeo for a fast commute. Pictures of my rain bike with its home made light system/cargo box are up on the "total geekiness" thread, check them out. Don

These past two weeks have been a little tough for commuting for me. My work changed my schedule to 8:00pm-6:00am. I thought it would be perfect for commuting! I had no idea how tired I'd be!! Tonight was my last night and I did ride in. Really nice sunset. Upper 70s. It's supposed to be in the lower 60s in the morning. Nice.

Tried a new way to work today. Took about a 1/2 mile out of the way. But far less traffic. My speedometer quit half way through my ride home. No lights on the side road either. But took my good light and everthing worked out good. Nice ride. Thanks.

vrkelley 09-24-04 10:39 PM

Great ride today. Foggy and 55 in the AM...70 on the PM commute. No stopping for "technical issues". ;)

BenyBen 09-24-04 11:05 PM

came back from a friend around 11pm tonight. It was 59F, which I find to be a very nice temperature for biking. The bike path was empty, and the wind was null. I made such good speed, and there is something eery about riding in the night, with no one around.

LivingStrong 09-24-04 11:50 PM

Was a great week. I worked all summer to get strong enough to commute and this was my first week. Rode to and from the office 3 days and to work today. Wanted to commute home, but had family plans.

8.5 each way, was a great week for me!

jharte 09-25-04 01:22 AM

BenyBen, I agree. There is something a little eery riding at night. I usually leave for work at 5:30am. I take neighborhood streets and there isn't much traffic (if any). In the winter, it gets deathly quiet. Gives me the jitters just thinking about it. The good kind of jitters. :D

cyclezealot 09-25-04 05:35 AM

Rode to work this afternoon..Santa Ana winds out..Slowed me down by about 20 minutes...Headwinds the whole way, so it seemed..A little over 90 as I approached the plant.

BenyBen 09-25-04 08:24 AM

jharte: I intend to try and comute to work this winter for my first winter. But if I can't, then I'll def get my bike out on "warm" snowy night and try it out.

Rogerinchrist 09-25-04 08:53 PM

Six day work week is done, yeah!! 102 miles commuting for a week with real good weather. See ya next time.

This morning I stopped to take off my jacket, and in my bike light I saw the most amazing thing- it was a spider web floating by through the air, just as delicate as it sounds, as slow as it could be and still move, with a tiny little spider riding on it like a magic carpet. Who knew spiders did that? I love spiders so I was doubly impressed. Biking rocks

300km starting at 4.00am, finishing at 9.55pm, over two hours under the time limit. No really major problems with my shoulder except when avoiding an errant possum about 30km from home -- the sudden evasive pull on the handlebars upset it a bit. The shoulder's mobility has actually improved a bit since the ride, but I now have a sore IT band in the right knee, and I didn't sleep particularly well last night.

I bussed to work this morning -- mechanical issues with the bike more than anything else. There will be a full stripdown and rebuild tonight and tomorrow night, so I should be back commuting on Wednesday as a shakedown.

I have a flat 400km in north-western Victoria this coming weekend. It should be a cinch compared with yesterday. Really just 10 daily commutes in the space of 30 hours ;)

Monday morning... very tired... if it hadn't been for the wind in my back i would never have made it..
...got to get me some coffee now.

RichardW 09-27-04 01:41 AM

Monday morning, the early sunlight picking out the threads of high golden cloud. A local holioday so the roads were empty as well. Special.
Though I've just rebuilt the bike so I was a bit preoccupied with mechanical niggles rather than the glorious morning.
Have a good week everyone

My ride in this morning started out great, nice cool morning with very light traffic, I got most of the way in to work and broke my rear shift cable, rode the rest of the way, about 3 miles with only one small hill in the 11 tooth cog in the rear. I need ti tie off the cable somewhere in the middle of the cassette for the ride home. The afternoon weather is forcasted to be nice so the ride should be pleasant but not fast.

Chris L 09-27-04 04:40 AM

Monday recovery ride for me today -- although my 222km yesterday was somewhat upstaged by Rowan's effort. Had an interesting conversation with a couple of drafting cyclists on the way in this morning (when we had the headwind). They told me I "had a good turn of speed" for a bloke carrying a commute. It was then that I informed them I was backing up from yesterday's effort. I'm not normally one to gloat, but the thought of these guys with $3,000 groupsets drafting a guy carrying a commute and backing up from a big ride the day before is quite an interesting proposition.

jharte 09-27-04 06:04 AM

Excellent ride this morning. I ride by a small pond at 5:30am and can see the fog covering the water. The water temps are still warm and the cool 56 deg air sets off a nice eery fog. Very nice ride.

Ed Holland 09-27-04 07:20 AM

Trouble with a lingering cold forced me to take the short route to work this morning, rather than push it over the hills and country lanes. I wish this bugger would clear up and leave me alone - I was starting to feel better on Saturday, now it is getting worse again  .
See you all tomorrow!
Cheers,

Ed
