I went out of my way to check out the American River Bike Trail detour. It's terrible. I'm glad it's not my regular route.

HardyWeinberg 04-03-07 11:01 AM

Very cold, but great. 9 extra miles.

Great rainy day commute. Gotta say, now that I'm outfitted (beater rain bike with fenders, rain pants & anorak), riding in the rain is fun. High 40s, and I was getting overheated under the rain gear by the end of my 6 mile ride.

The earthworms were out in force crossing the paved parts of the bike trail. I felt bad for them, it was like Gallipoli.

Got to work a little late b/c I stopped and voted (state & local elections) on the way to work.

Commute in was great. I used google maps satelite pics to look for an alteranative route around a very congested and high speed section of road with multiple intersections and merges that left me taking lane #3 out of 5 due to the way the interchanges were layed out. The new bypass adds about a 1/2 mile to my commute each way but at least I don't feel like I am about to become roadkill anymore.

asterisk 04-03-07 06:25 PM

First thing was 5 minutes into the ride. Another a commuter was behind me, and going straight, when I was merging over to turn left at an intersection. A car pulls up behind him, the driver honks and male passenger yells something typical that I can't remember. Once the two of them come to a stop, at the sign 10 or so feet ahead of their honk, the cyclist, and in a very calm tone, leaned into their open window and said, "Thats what your boyfriend said last to me last night." I just pedaled away slowly after watching it all.

Then right at the end of the ride, a cop was waiting to catch people running a red. I rolled through slowish, but I didn't notice him until I was past the line. Somehow I stopped quick and stood for a sec before he committed to me. I saw him put his throttle hand down right when I saw him, but he let me go. I waved, despite my anger. **** cops, I have to thank him for not giving me a ticket? Thanks, whatever.

31F AM ride...drive pavement both ways...That's Major!

bikedaddy 04-03-07 08:47 PM

Had to yell at some cager today for almost running into me. She just honked and drove away. Those sort of interactinos don't happen to much in this town... at least not to me so I'm not used to it and always get pumped up.

Also ... stupid spring and the wind. Everyday on the way home a south wind kicks my butt.

Sh*tty....came out of work to a flat tire...didn't have a tube so I walked a mile and a half to the lbs but, I've learned my lesson and will always have a spare tube now.

scottmorrison99 04-03-07 10:37 PM

Crankarm strike! I took a corner too fast on my fixed gear and managed to hit my pedal and crankarm on the road. I rode on my front tire with my rear wheel in the air for a bit, and rode it out. Waved at the startled family staring at me in shock as if I meant to do that.:D Nice ride both ways, only honk I got was from a coworker saying hello.

RonH 04-04-07 05:38 AM

I worked the "late shift" (2:30 pm-6:30 pm) at the bike shop yesterday so the ride in was awesome --- ~75F and sunny.
A cold front started moving in late in the day and I got home about 10 minutes before the rain and hail started. :)
The rain is gone this morning but it's supposed to be WINDY today and tomorrow, which means I'll have a head wind all the way to work. :crash: I'm working the late shift again today and tomorrow so I'll probably need a vest and possibly arm warmers. :(

When are the warm temps coming back? :o

Had a good, though slow ride home yesterday. Saw another commuter who I dropped like a bad habit. Got buzzed by a lady in a minivan. I gave her a WTF? shrug, but doubt she saw it or even cared if she did. Whatever!
Had a good ride in this am, with the pavement still slightly wet from last night's rains. cold front is suppsoed to pass through w/ a few showers today, but according to the weatherman they should be out of here by ~ 2:00 leaving me with (hopefully) a dry commute and a screaming 20 mph tailwind. Guess i'll need to turn the furnace back on tonight. Its been off since 3/24.

vtjim 04-04-07 06:01 AM

Raw. Rained on me the whole way in. Temperatures hovering in the neighborhood of 30F. Headwind.

The good news is: My bike is clean. :D

Even with the rain, I saw 4 pedestrians and one woman cyclist with a badly positioned helmet on her head. That's one person per mile of MUP. Not a bad ratio.

ModoVincere 04-04-07 06:37 AM

Messy this morning. We had some fairly good size storms roll through about 3:00 am and there's debris everywhere. Lots of leaves, small twigs and limbs, and blossom remains everywhere. I don't think the storms did any kind of damage to structures though.

Met a guy this morning that said he used to ride for Navigators back in '94-95. I don't know much about Navigators team, but that would be cool if I could live that life for a while. He said he commutes occasionally, but its 25 miles 1 way and the roads are not real conducive to riding, as there's not much of a shoulder (if any) and the traffic is very heavy. I wish I got the guys name.

Rainy ride in today, but a good day to ride my singlespeed MTB to work for the first time. (Full disclosure, it's actually a dinglespeed with 2 rings/ 2 cogs, and a Surly Singleator to tension the chain, which is now in push-up mode, despite the photo below. 42x16 for town, 36x18 for the trails)

Made pretty good time, despite the knobbies, 26" wheels, and low gearing- def gets me jonesing for a road style SS...

jyossarian 04-04-07 07:31 AM

Beat the rain and all the cagers today. Did a whole lotta riding the VC crowd would not approve of.

Itsjustb 04-04-07 07:40 AM

Good commute today--felt a few drops as I left but they stopped less than .5 miles into the commute.

Yesterday a JAM (old man, looked like a bum/drunk) pulled out of a side street on my right and cut me off (I could have touched his rear hatch if I'd dialed it up a little higher). The thing is, he saw me coming, waited (with the car kinda rocking back and forth), then went as I got nice and close. A$$hole. But I got over it later....

My wife has given me the green light to buy a new road bike. I went out last night and test rode 2 of my 4 current options: a Trek Pilot (can't remember which model) and a Specialized Roubaix Elite. The Pilot was OK (I'm not a Trek fan) but the Roubaix, which is full-carbon, blew its doors off. Alas, the Roubaix is $200 over my budget. This weekend I'm trying a Cannondale Synapse and a Fuji Team.

Still fighting a cold, and working the early shift at work isn't helping. I feel like shizzle. I switched back to skinny tires today, as snow accumulation was sparse at best. I thought I was going to be able to retire the snow bike for the summer, but noooooo...

rocks in head 04-04-07 07:53 AM

Yesterday's homeward commute: came out of the building to a flat. Two days two flats. I'm running out of new tubes and have to find time to start patching.

50's and raining on the way in... should have worn tights vs. rainpants, I was kind of sweaty on the way in... many fewer people commuting today, this is my third complete round trip to work (my first leg was from work going home, actuallY)... and it was quite nice. T-storms and high wind all night, so the rivers were high and a bit of debris on the path. All in all very pleasant.

sekaijin 04-04-07 08:02 AM

Morning commute 25 degrees, snow flurries, gusty wind from the NW made for a nice tailwind. Enjoying the extreme commuting.

Flimflam 04-04-07 08:09 AM

First ride in 10 days, been trying to ward off a swollen throat/cold thing. Dodgeball tournament with work last night proved that I was fit and well enough, so I rode today.

Was really gung-ho about it once I saw it raining, I love rain rides - once I actually left it was wet but not actually raining, so I didn't have to don the goretex.

Ride was smooth sailing, the rain helped de-gunk my bike from my previous muddy hill/bank excursion I had (when I originally got sick with chills/fever of 102) - other than my rear brake cable sticking and the end popping out of the adjustment shoulder on the lever, all was well. Bike is in desperate need of a good clean and re-lube, must stop at the LBS and get more lube.

Raced a streetcar off the mark, mainly because I didn't want to get held up behind it, nice little final sprint but felt good to keep up and finally pass it once it started slowing to stop. I'm horribly out of conditioning/shape, that'll soon switch up I hope.

HardyWeinberg 04-04-07 10:34 AM

Nice ride in, 10F warmer than last couple AMs, cloudy (but *warm* cloudy!). 9 mile add-on again.

caloso 04-04-07 10:56 AM

Convinced my wife to ride downtown with me today. We dropped her off at her office and I took the kids in the trailer to preschool before looping back to work. We left much later than I normally do and picked a fairly direct but lightly traveled route.

We rode alongside a guy on a recumbent for a few blocks, but seemed to be pretty timid of the street since he kept jumping on the sidewalk whenever he could. Of course the sidewalk in Midtown has tons of cracks from tree roots and driveway cutouts so he was bouncing all over the place. I looked over and thought he was going to throw his chain. I didn't say anything to him but instead kept up the chatter with the kids: Hey look at the garbage truck! Okay, train tracks--be ready for the bump!" Stuff like that.

Nice ride. On the way home we'll swing by the train station and Old Sac for a more scenic ride.

Very nice ride indeed. Makes me wish I had started riding again when my kids were that age.

i walked and took the mini-bus LA Express (Landis Avenue Express) for free (NO $)!
Heavy RAIN!
Past two days (+50.0 miles) got 2 right hooks, and 1 left turn approaching almost decided to go (head on to me, i had the right of way). dog's still unchained, so bought HALT after # 8x interaction. called animal control but not resolve, (What are we as citizense paying them for?)
