Good commute. I've been tweaking my fit lately and after a round of crappy adjustments, the latest changes are much nicer. However, my wacky foot is bugging me. I tend to walk on the outside of my right foot and this is causing issues while pedaling clipless being that I put all the pressure on the right side of the ball of my foot. Time to check out lewedges or specialized's version.
I discovered that 40F is too warm for a jersey with a poly long john base layer and arm warmers. The arm warmers put me into overheat mode. Had to removed them. |
Great ride, temp in the low 60s F. Wet roads from last night's rain, I'm loving the fenders on my new bike! First commute with new [calibrated] bike computer and it says my route is 12.9 mi. On my old bike I just used the wheel circumference for 700x32 wheels from the computer manual and my commute came out to 10.9 mi. Need to check the calibration on the new computer and drive the same route one day in my car to check the distance.

Nice commute today. Same weather as Chuck G's. :) Only one honk.

relocated this weekend...
Just started my 24 mi rt commute this morning. Rode home Fri. evening, but that doesn't really count... tons of broken glass the first few miles of the ride, picked up a shard and spend ~15 minutes replacing a tube. I'm slow, I know, but I'll get faster if I can't go down to the bridge and sweep it. I was pretty tired by the time I got to work... the commute with tire change was about an hour and 20 minutes, and the shower and change was another 15, so it's a big change from the 25-30 minutes I used to spend on the 9 mi rt commute. The new route is almost entirely on MUP, (Mt Vernon, heading south, for those of you local) lots of people heading the other way, one or two joggers, bright sunshine and flowers, all in all a great time. I can't wait to go home! |
Warm and sticky with mostly wet roads. Made good time with a light tailwind though. Gonna be very warm and the air full of pollen on the way home.

This morning a young woman in a Ford Explorer tried to pass me on a small neighborhood street. The street was one of those narrow ones that's really about 1 1/2 lanes--just being out of the doorzone puts you in the middle of the lane. I was in the center of the lane and doing about 18 when she tried to pull around. She pulled up alongside of me when she noticed that I wasn't slowing, I wasn't ceding her the center of the lane, and that she was about to crash into a triangular curb. So she hit the brakes, I went through the intersection, and then she followed around me. As she went by, I gave her the international "WTF?" gesture but I noticed she very deliberately avoided looking at me. Nice.

Cold! Ice on the deck... but very nice sunny ride.

A guy on a roadified JTS dropped me like a hot potato today. I can't help but feel self-conscious. "I just got out of track practice," I want to yell, "I'm really tired but usually I ride much faster than this! I did a century when I was 13  " Basically anything to establish my "cred" and make me not be that guy who bought the first bike he saw with drop bars and doesn't know what he's doing...
Don't blame me for being self-conscious. I'm still in high school. |
Nice ride both ways on the fixed gear. I felt fast and strong. Must be hallucinating. No problems with anyone, just in the zone today.
|
Cold, windy, and miserable.
But I'm glad I did it. |
A little bit damp this morning, and around 40F. It was a nice ride though. I saw a pair of loons in Lake Champlain, and chased a couple of squirrels off the MUP.
My new Michelin Transworlds arrived yesterday so I mounted them last night. They went on with a minimum of fuss, but I did have to work at them a little bit with the irons. I like them. Much faster than the stock knobbies (not a surprise) and 2 or 3 MPH faster than the studded Hakkas I've been riding in the winter. Quiet, too. Good for sneaking up and buzzing pedestrians. (Kidding! :p) The reflective sidewall is a nice feature. Unfortunately I noticed my back wheel is a bit out of true so I'll walk it over (1 block) to the LBS this morning to get straightened. I'm a bit of a clydesdale at 6'2" & 200 pounds, and riding on rough-packed ice and snow isn't exactly easy on the wheels. The front one is fine though. |
Bah! Overslept this morning and drove in. I'm a little pissed b/c I usually take Wednesdays off from biking, being a good way to take a break and break up the week, do errands, etc. Then I normally get on the treadmill and run while watching Friday Night Lights. Guess I'll just run and watch baseball tonight...
Also, today was going to be the first day I commuted on the "dinglespeed" mtn bike I built this winter, instead of my Kona Jake. Curious to see how I can handle the hills in my town gear of 42x16. |
Rode the univega in this morning. The rear wheel on the Puch is hosed, and I took a look at it last night. Looks like someone tried to use a pair of pliers on the nipples at some point. My spoke wrench would not even turn half the nipples :(
Guess I'll be taking that wheel into the LBS for a new build. Well, on the bright side, I can get the hubs all cleaned up and maybe get them overhauled too. |
2-3 more inches of snow. This time it was powder. Yesterday traffic was very light, I thought it was due to spring break. But today it was very heavy, considering the storm. The snow is still coming down hard.
|
Nice ride in this AM. Lots of pollen to deal with, but temps were quite pleasant. No incidents with any knuckleheaded drivers.
|
Soft fluffy snow and very little traffic. I am still suffering from Dayquil-zombie syndrome. It is taking a lot of concentration to type.
|
Great, except for the -14c temp with the 40 gusting to 60km/h headwind.

Fast commute today. Must have been going around, as I ran into another commuter from my building and he said the same about his. |

nice and sunny, balmy weather, lots of tourists out around the cherry blossoms... I like the new route... interesting enough, not a whole lot of traffic, and besides the mile or so of hazardous broken glass and potholes that I have to ride on to get across the Souza bridge, pretty clear sailing the entire way. My legs are starting to feel it, yesterday was my first 24-mile commute, the 12 miles this morning felt like they went slower (minus the time spent fixing the flat yesterday)
|
Ride to work included a sprint to pass an accelerating garbage truck on my right. Beat the truck, pulled in front, then turned at the next corner. Typical cager move except I wasn't in a cage. :)
|
A little cooler this morning which was nice. Almost got run over by a guy in a truck who pulled out in front of me. I yelled and he put his brakes on but didn't stop and instead took off. I almost wanted to follow but decided better of it. Another mid 80s day here today, I will be enjoying the ride home.

I'm looking forward to the commute to school today. Normally it's only 2.5 miles, but I'm going to lengthen it considerably because I have the time--school doesn't start until 10:45 for the Seniors because everyone else is using the mornings to take the state standardized tests. |
