Wow did I get caught out in a storm at lunch today. I mean all of a sudden it's raining buckets, so I dive into Moe's eat a burritto and wait out the rain. I arrived back at work only slightly wet.

gizem310 01-05-07 01:54 PM

I literally had to bushwhack my way to work this morning! The wind had blown half of a tree on the bike path so I had to get off and make a hole big enough for me, the bike and the trailer to get through! I did not see a single person on the bike path which made me feel like Xena! Called the public works and reported the tree when I got to work. Hopefully it'll be gone by my night commute.

I rode 4 times this week, with 3 different mileages, for a total of 43 miles. I caught the extra "feeder" bus that took me within a half mile of my work (instead of 5 miles) on two of the days and today my wife is picking me up.

Wednesday, I had 25 mph headwinds on the ride home and decided to take the hilly route, so it felt as if I had a flat tire. What usually takes me 20 minutes took closer to 30. Luckily, the narrow portion of my ride had a tailwind, so I was not chugging uphill with cars whooshing around me.

Lot of rain, lot of wind.

+1 blustery. The sun is setting later and yesterday, it was actually light before 5...but then today...seemed dark at 3:30

marqueemoon 01-05-07 09:07 PM

Stinging cold rain. I can deal with it fine. It's just getting a bit boring.

non commute today by bike :-( ...
fired honda cx up (battery problems from non use?), felt car to car 'pressure' for following listed speed limits.
go figure...doesn't 35mph speed limit mean "don't exceed 35mph"? i did go to 40 mph in 35mph zones (with pressure) and 55mph in 50mph zones (simular pressure felt, other drivers). i missed the ride.
welcome to the week-end!

about an inch of wet, heavy snow on the ground this morning with great heavy blobs of rain/snow falling, and clearer skies with yet-another-wind-warning tonight. at least it was a tail/crosswind this time. i rode over the bridge and took a bus for the hilly part of the rest because of the crosswind factor. had to come west for the last mile or so from the bus stop, and i met a headwind. my kid came to open the door and asked how the ride had been, given the weather. he thought it was funny when i described how silly you feel pedalling like a demon without apparently moving forward at all. especially when a nice courteous oncoming driver has delayed their left turn so you can go by, and is sitting there watching you approach at the speed of molasses, while you wonder if you should shrug and grin and mime some kind of communication while you both wait for you to go through . . . . i thought it was pretty funny myself but boy i was glad not to have had to fight that all the way home.

the wet snow on the ground this morning was a lot more fun than the chaos of a month ago. it was all grey and gusty and raining more heavy blobs of rain/snow all the way in, but by lucky fluke i'd dressed myself exactly right for it, so it was like a party for me.

Today it was hard as the temp was way into the mid 30's keeping hydrated was a real struggle

heres to a cooler week next week

gotta love the australian summer eh!!!!!

deputyjones 01-06-07 05:52 AM

Awesome! 50 degrees on the way in at 5:00 pm and 40 on the way home at 6:00 am. Quite windy though. Which is ok for my short commute. Just gives me a better workout.

scottmorrison99 01-06-07 10:28 PM

Nice ride both ways. Weekend commutes rock, weekend work doesn't.

CrosseyedCrickt 01-06-07 11:19 PM

First day of commuting since the week before Christmas. We had alot of time off work and I only got to go out riding 3 times during my vacation and those were just to the store and back.
The thermomometer said 46F, but nothing about the 25mph headwind with 35mph gusts I'd be facing my whole trip. I got to work in a little over an hour and my legs are still sore, that was 7 hours ago.

buzzman 01-07-07 01:17 AM

weird to say this but didn't commute today (still off from school!) so I took a 45 mile road ride in the 70 degree weather we are having!!!! started off with leg warmers and ended up stripping them off ten miles into the ride because I was overheating!

Strange. The smells are just not right. It doesn't smell of spring or of winter.

I'm going to ride while the riding is good but this is down right eerie weather for the Northeast in January.

Minnesota Commute

Hello, my commute is about 12 miles, mostly urban/suburban. I commute all seasons and my favorite time is when it snows. My company moved from a building with locker rooms and showers to a new building with none of those amenities; however, with some ingenuity, I can still shampoo my hair and get ready for work each morning (it is a pretty formal environment). My favorite commuting bike is my Surly fixed gear, but if it is really snowy or icy, I use my Cannondale Bad Boy.

Hey Kirk! welcome.

scottmorrison99 01-07-07 10:29 PM

Good ride, and I really like my new lobster gloves. Been riding a lot faster lately due to no wind.

bikemore7 01-07-07 11:33 PM

OK, Now that 06 is a wrap, time to brag about your 06 commuting. -Number of Commutes? -Commuting miles? Percent of Commutes? Total gas saved? Carbon footprint reduced by XXX tons of Carbon? SOUND OFF!

I was just thinking the same thing on Friday night when I was riding home. Except in my case it smelled like spring.

Mid 30Fs this morning, light rain, moderate headwind. Supposed to have a nice tailwind for the ride home today, and more rain.

As for commute miles in 06, I'm about 13 miles per day, and I ride almost every day except for a roughly 6-week period last winter (MUP snowed in) so over 3,000 miles. My Tacoma gets roughly 21MPG around town so that's around 150 gallons of gas.

JohnBrooking 01-08-07 07:51 AM

Steady rain this morning, mid 40s F. Perfect for my Huffy 3-speed internal hub. Kept fairly dry in rain gear, except socks. Note to self: Bring spare socks to keep in desk for wet days I forget to bring spares!

squegeeboo 01-08-07 08:37 AM

So. Much. Wind. Slowed me down a good 3-4mph from my usual ride in against a head wind, beyond that, a light sprinkle, so not to shabby.

GTcommuter 01-08-07 08:59 AM

Fine ride in today. Though my bike was a bit heavier than usual...

I'm heading out on a touring/camping trip for MLK weekend, so I'm ramping up the weight on my commute during gradually during this week. Today's gear -- stove/cook kit, all warm clothes, tools/safety gear. Tomorrow -- adding the tent & sleeping pad. Wednesday -- sleeping bag & rest of the clothes.

This morning I was pushing 10 mph on the flats. Winds were 30 mph, in my face! Plus, I ride along the river, which was very high and parts of the MUP were muddy and even under water. It was my slowest commute I've ever had. Still loved it!

Might snow today--a nice tailwind would be a blast in the snow for my return trip!:D

RonH 01-08-07 09:05 AM

Not bad. Sunny and low 40s (6C) with a slight headwind that will be a tailwind for the ride home. :D

Now that I'm 62  I'm easing toward retirement and started working a 6 hour day (9:00AM to 3:00PM) last week (January 2).
Leaving at 3:00 gives me time to do a few things in the afternoon. When the days start getting a little longer (and warmer) I'll be doing after work rides to Stone Mountain.

cooperwx 01-08-07 09:08 AM

The party's over on the east coast. It actually ended here overnight. I swear my home thermometer said 47° at 6:20, but the storage bldg thermometer along my route said 40°. Upper 30's downtown: I was a bit underdressed. It's supposed to be cool and breezy this afternoon, so I had my gloves with me. Wish I had the earmuffs, though...
