The weather is gross again. Temps around 2C, with rain/wet snow. Easily manageable with just a waterproof shell, all-weather helmet, waterproof gloves and a face mask. Not pleasant, though.

pinkrobe 01-08-07 09:25 AM

It was only -2C, but the wind dropped that down to about -10C. The forecast is calling for winds up to 100 km/h, so I'll be riding uphill into a headwind on the way home. Lovely.

When the dog woke me at 3am to go outside (she has no sense of time and sleep), I saw it was snowing. I was all happy about it too: Finally! A snow ride! I've had these studded tires on the bike for a month now, but it's been fifty friggin degrees lately and I haven't ridden in snow yet.

By the time I got out of the house at 7am...all that snow had melted, so it was another cold, wet ride to the university. Sigh.....well, at least I can still ride:)

Two Buck Chuck 01-08-07 09:45 AM

I was expecting the rain to lighten up as the morning progressed, but it just got heavier and colder as I was crossing the Potomac into DC. Passing the hundreds of cars inching along on the GW Parkway made it worthwhile, though.

I was soaked to the bone--definitely need to invest in some better rain gear if I want to continue riding in this stuff. I can get away with it when the temps are in the 50s, but it would have been chilly otherwise.

DataJunkie 01-08-07 09:54 AM

Holy cow. I took the mountain bike out and rode 4 miles in the snow and ice. That was one heck of a workout. Eeek! At least it was fun.

HardyWeinberg 01-08-07 10:04 AM

Nice ride. Dark, 40-ish F. Supposed to get way cold and maybe snow later this week. Not fair, not what I signed up for! Actually now that the sun is rising it is looking pretty clear, so I'm surprised its not colder out than it was.

caloso 01-08-07 11:01 AM

Chilly: 28F/-2C when I left the house at 6:10 to take the long detour route in. I don't think my wife is too wild about the look but my chin is glad I grew the beard. I only wish it was as black as the last time I grew one....

Other than the cool temps, it's just about a perfect day to ride a bike: calm and bright blue skies. I'd been riding the fixie to work almost every day since November but there's zero chance of rain today and a perfect opportunity to ride the go-fast bike. Maybe I'll even be able to get in a few extra miles on the way home too.

bikedaddy 01-08-07 11:13 AM

Well I decided to cut through the park today but blowing snow made this impossible. Had to turn around and join back up with my normal route. Before I made it I wiped out on some ice. Tore a nice whole in my new rain pants but no real damage to me or the bike. The bike trail had snow blown on to it so some spots were rough although it is fun to negotiate the snow.

Had my first 'get on the sidewalk' yell today. Even it was legal for me to do so... not possible when there is 3 feet of snow covering them. I guess it ticked me off but then I thought about the lady that actaully stopped at the bike path crossing to let me go. This doesn't happen often so I guess it balances out.

Commute was great, though it started out with a stupid honk from a stupid cager on a virtually empty road. But then he passed me with sufficient clearance, so who cares? I haven't filled up my tires since last year - until today - so suddenly the bike feels MUCH faster. :) And it's a hot, hot January in Toronto. :)

Today was my first commute to work! I’m hooked!!!! I never felt so good at work.
It’s an intermediate ride. 12 miles from La Jolla to Mira Mesa (San Diego). I need to change the route a little because I had to ride up Torrey Pines without enough time to warm up.
I’ll try to do it at least twice a week!

Days like that, I just keep thinking to myself "comfort is overrated"! :D

i'm just glad that it's clear enough to get the wheels rollin. i wiped out going down the ramp to the bike path and almost again coming off it. those are the icier sections of the path. didn't get hurt or anything, so i'm just glad i could do some riding. can't wait until i can ride the fixed gear with some confidence, but that might not happen soon since we're likely getting snow again thursday - saturday. argh!!! maybe if wednesday is clear enough, i'll go out for a few miles.

RomSpaceKnight 01-08-07 08:29 PM

Yippee, -2C with a windchill of -7C. Finally a dry ride to work. I hate 2'C and rain. You can't enjoy any outdoor activity in those conditions. Unless you are waist deep wearing neoprene waders in freezing water fly fishing for winter steelhead. Even then at -2 it is bit drier above water although your eyelets have freezing up issues unless you wax them.

Not sure why but I was really dragging a$$ today. It was really warm, this morning it was in the 60's and this afternoon in the high 70's. The Santa Ana's were blowing today. That might of had something to do with it.

donnamb 01-08-07 09:18 PM

Balmy night fog on the way home - I love it!

scottmorrison99 01-08-07 10:58 PM

Ride in was 31F, ride home was warm. Trying to really bring up my average speed and get a decent, if short, workout to and from work. The Spring club riding season isn't that far away, and I'll be ready.

vtjim 01-09-07 07:24 AM

Right around freezing this morning. Crosswind with a slight tailwind component but not enough to help much. Smelled a skunk. :p

Mr_H 01-09-07 07:39 AM

22 degrees, light wind....didn't wear enough on my feet. All in all, a good way to start the morning. I love the stares I get from people in their cars, drinking their coffees, all bundled up.
They look cold:)

jyossarian 01-09-07 08:21 AM

First commute of the new year which means I'm not on vacation anymore. Oh well. Ride in was the usual squeezing between rows of cars, zig zagging and pedestrian avoidance. Cagers behaved themselves although a couple were bewildering at times w/ their slow crawling driving w/ nothing in front of them.

bikebuddha 01-09-07 08:57 AM

0 degrees C this morning and it felt it. I had a nice slow ride in.

JohnnyOTS 01-09-07 09:11 AM

Rotated the tires on my Jake last night - I've managed to wear off most of the center tread on my rear tire. The front was fine. Decent ride in this morning - Made good time (as compared to, say, an asthmatic chihuahua.) I was waiting to turn left on a fairly quiet 4 lane road when a motorist pulled up next to me, rolled down his window and said, "That LED light is great! You can see it a mile away." Since I have 5 LED lights facing rearward, I asked him which one, figuring it was the Planet Bike Superflash on my rear rack. It was.

HardyWeinberg 01-09-07 09:58 AM

I love my LBS, they gave me a loaner light when my cygo halo crapped out (again, they've done this before). But, this light doesn't really fit on my handlebars, so it was resting on my brake cable, shining in car's faces (not such a bad thing) and not really showing me the best view of (other) road hazards and potholes and such.

luckysnafu 01-09-07 10:08 AM

I skipped riding yesterday since it was raining in the morning and I regret it because it was only drizzle and it was sunny by the early afternoon. Oh well, back on the bike this morning and it was finally cold here, temps in the low 30s. I got buzzed by a guy on a moped thing. I guess he felt he couldn't give me space since cars were passing him as well.

rustycool7 01-09-07 10:19 AM

28 degrees this morning but felt good enough to ride through Petersburg National Battlefield on the way to work. Saw 2 herds of 8-10 deer.
