Light rain and headwinds on my way to campus this morning. Haven't bought my rain gear yet, so got a bit damp - but, found out my el cheapo $15 CCM trackpants are amazingly water resistant, and dry very quickly (~10 min). Pleasant surprise. No fenders though - the spans on the newly purchased full fender set are too short. Krikey. Wished I was back home with my family when the front wheel spray started hitting my face! I think I had a nice "cyclist butt" (dirt streak) when I arrived, as well.......

Ride home: overcast, about 10C, dry roads. MUCH better. I'll try to post some pics of the cherry trees in bloom in the commuter pics sticky......tomorrow, though.

There was a dusting of snow on the path, and I was the first to cross it. At 27F, it was warm enough that I didn't have to worry about getting cold. I love quiet, early-morning rides across fresh snow!

I took it slow because today was my first day back on the bike after about a week off for being seek. And even then, I was only on the bike for a day or two after about a week off for being sick.

Last night's commute home was by far the toughest I've encountered. Headwind of 25mph w/ gusts up to 40. Sleet pelting me in the face the whole time.
At times I was almost at a standstill. Took me probably twice as long as normal to get home.

Nice ride in fresh snow. Roads were cleared, even had the occasional shoulder. The single track was untracked except for the fox footprints. This was a heavy snow as the trees were hanging low. My bike was coated with snow by the time I got to work. wish I had a digital pix for you guys. Didn't ride yesterday because of the forecast so I didn't experience what Nick rode through.

Great day for a cruise to work...somedays I just can't understand why anyone would rather drive a car rather than ride a bike. I mean really, why not experience the day. I think many Saskatchewanians must be suckers for punishment...like it is some right of passage to commute in a car and make it through a work day. I feel like I am on holidays every morning and evening.

Anyways, today is -15C with a slight wind. The high today is supposed to be -3c and tomorrow -1c. The ice and snow on bike paths and side roads should mostly be gone by the weekend due to the wonderful radiant heat from the sun.

Based upon last friday's ride home, it seems I've fallen a little out of cycling shape over the winter. As I start back to riding more often it seems I'll have to work up to it. So this morning, I rode in from about 1/2 way. It was a good ride, the temps were in the mid 20's and there was no wind at all. I saw 4 other bikers out and about.

Major project at work finally winding down. Won't have to be on the road so much now. So finally am able to get back to bike commuting!

Perfect morning for a ride. Cool not cold with a high overcast that should burn off by noon. I was waved through a stop sign by a nice young woman in a Honda Accord this morning near my house. I've decided that part of my new attitude of gratitude is to accept these gestures when it's safe rather than getting all hyperlegalistic about who's got the actual right of way. Such a more pleasant feeling to give a friendly wave than to do all the pointing and yelling, "No! You go!"

This morning was nice... a few patches of fog here and there, and some pockets of cold air. I'd just completely overhauled my bike this past weekend, along with putting in new aero levers (I had old school cables in your face brake levers) and new griptape. 'Cept for the fact that I should replace my drivetrain, she rides like a dream.

Yesterday's commute home was quite interesting. An adolescent boy on his bike came behind me at a red light, and pulled ahead of me once the light turned green. He looked back at me, with a gesture to race on his face, along with an ugly scab above his lip (it looked inflicted). So I smiled at him, then he hops down in front of me, then I tell him "watch it, kid". This guy was trying to pedal so pathetically, I was coasting behind him. After 10 more seconds of that, I pulled ahead of him, and got way beyond him once we engaged the hill. I didn't see him again after that.

Anyway, that hill is one of the very reasons why I appreciate having a multispeed bike. Of course, there are a buncha hipsters out in Portland that like to ride on their fixies, as they call it, which I have nothing against, but I'd never ride a fixie to fit into their group. Not to mention there are quite a few cyclists out here who are into their multicolored spandex and $1000+ bikes, zipping past you during your commute, but I'm not into that (nor do I have that income). Okay, I'll shut up now.

Nice evening ride home on Monday. My commute is a steady desert (gradual) 800' climb in about 8 miles followed by a 3 mile flat run to the house. I rode into a lovely PM rainstorm near the top, but Red Rock Canyon was silhouetted in pre-dusk sunlight. Amazing!!!

I over loaded my trike for what the rack could stand.

I bent the rack. Had a tire rub all the way to work.

I figured this out after stopping and adjusting fender and thinking I needed more air in rear tire for extra load.

Fixed frame today.

Need to travel lighter.

44F with light rain as I rode in on my Centurion at 6AM this morning. By lunchtime, it was sunny and stayed that way through the afternoon & on my commute home. as I turned west into our drive, I could see clouds rolling in from the southwest for the scheduled rain tonight. I finally managed to fit a set of zefal fenders on my Torelli (30 mm clearance on the front fork) so I was ready if it rained this afternoon. Good

Snow , snow and more snow ,But beside that a good ride to

Greetings from someone who wishes he still lived in Portland. With regards to your post, I ride both multi-gear and fixed and recommend trying fixed to all my geared friends. Not because I think it is really cool (it is, though) but because it is just plain fun !! Really does take me back to the feeling of first learning to ride. Plus, there are benefits with improved pedal-stroke and such. Besides, you live in what is, IMHO, the perfect city for any and all types of cycling (I miss bike lanes and people in cars who act like they have actually seen a bike on the street). Not trying to convince you to try fixed (a lie- I am too). Just my two cents. Enjoy Portland, I never realized just how nice it was until I ended up here in Texas.

we had quite a bit of snow yesterday, with a layer of slush first, so the ride was treacherous back up near my house, and dodgy everywhere else. there were a few unusually grumpy motorists as well. it's been knid of a long winter. dare i long for spring?

43F with light rain at 6AM, uneventful ride in through light traffic. Showers & sunshine throughout the day. Pleased to note the sky is lightening up near the end of my commute, soon I can store my lights & batteries until Fall.

Hard ride to work and home today. Alot of cars on the way to work and home. The rail bed that I take to work is under a foot of snow . So hopefully In a day or so I can get back on it . It is a fast ride on the main roads,but not safe and not as fun . Have a good nite .

44F and a nice sunrise at 6am today. Pretty easy ride in this morning, with the typical quizzical looks from the local Vegas (is there really such a thing?) commuters. My ride is pretty straightforward - West side 'burbs with a few major intersections.

low 20's, clear skies, windy. my single track through the snow is kicking my a$$. I fell over like a sack of potatoes. If I could keep my momentum going then I can ride it clean but....looking foward to spring
