Same as yesterday, rain/hail/thunder but with no sunny ending.

zakk 04-08-05 04:25 PM

wet & wild, looking windy on the way home. gusts to 25MPH. too bad it isn't a tail wind, I'd make record time :D

Well, the commute to work yesterday was great, but on the way home I was caught in a freak rain/sleet/wind storm that we on the edge of the Rockies have been known to get. Biking west through my town I was repeatedly stood up by fierce winds, making the ride even worse.
About a half mile from my apartment I hear a horn honk behind me-- "Oh man, not anymore high school kids" I thought to myself. I turn to see my girlfriend in my Subaru slowing down on the shoulder.
She asks if I want a ride home, as she was worried about meand the storm. I say there is no lightning and the winds have calmed (sort of) and that I will make it home!
Surprised, she drives off, and te minutes later (as I said the headwinds were fierce) I make it home.
I was quite proud of myself for making it home and sticking with the biking like I did. I may be getting out of my newbie stage yet!

Oh, I didn't mention, that my rear tire was half inflated the whole time and I didn't have my minipump with me... I'm getting some slicks for my MTB in light of that, and making it into a TRUE commuter.

Thanks for listening.

I work for a bicycle advocacy organization in Atlanta and to encourage folks to ride to this weekend's Dogwood Festival we are providing free secure bike parking for cyclists.
Somehow riding to work on Saturday and Sunday isn't as much "fun" as during the week. I guess it's because I'd rather be doing my weekend riding on my Litespeed. :(

My week-end commute is my favorite. Half my commute goes through an industrial area and there's hardly any traffic on week-end. Another reason is I like being off during the week so there's less people on bike trails and parks (I do nature photography).

Today is a great day. I did some scouting yesterday and came to work on a new route this morning. It goes through a train yard and the streets aren't on any maps so I never bothered giving it a try. It's 2km shorter but I don't save much time because I have to dismount and walk on a pedestrian bridge to cross a freeway. It's much more enjoyable though. No more pot-holed freeway service road with trucks going twice the speed limit. A long part of my new route has pavement that's as smooth as it gets. I also has large speed bumps which slows trucks but not bicycles. This new way across the freeway opened up another route. I'll see tomorrow what's it's like with real traffic.

Bright and sunny, 10c, hardly any traffic, I cruised to work at 7:30am down the middle of some roads you can't even see the middle of during the week. A cop even waved. Too frickin bad I have to be at work.

The rest of the week should be interesting: our public transit system is possibly going on strike tomorrow morning so there may well be 5 times as many cyclists and motorists on the road. Dunno how much I'm gonna like that.

Rode Friday & Saturday. 30F in 60F coming home Fri. 40F in 55F breezy coming home Sat. Have heard rooster pheasants in 2 or 3 different locals. Also heard a turkey gobble Friday mornin'.

Perfect weather in the 60's and 70's last couple of days. Almost got taken out by a motorist "right hook" yesterday. He got the finger. A little bit of compensation for that on the ride home when a young lady in a VW Bug behind me yelled that she "liked my helmet". (Got the blinkie light atop it).

Hickabod 04-11-05 05:20 AM

The red sky may have caused sailors to take warning, but for me it encouraged me to take my time. So I took the long way to work this morning. Not sure what the temperature was, let's say perfect (just cool enough before turning cold on the downhills).
The ride home should be a little warmer. I'm hoping that doesn't mean hot. I have some shorts packed just in case.

Rixtory 04-11-05 05:29 AM

Got about 1/2 mle down the road 6:30 this morning and was already f-f-f-f-freezing. Turned and came back - Checked the temp - 34 with an 8 mph wind - No wonder I was cold. High of 44 today. Tomorrow will be warmer. Maybe I got spoiled after a weekend in the 70's.
Have a great ride everyone!!!

Heavy overcast all day. Left this morning in 64 F, with winds out of the NNW at 6 mph.
Didn’t start the TL-LD500 back up tail light flashing when I left this morning figuring just the TL-LD1000 would be enough. Of course the batteries ran out of juice in the TL-LD1000 on the way in. Didn’t notice it until I got to the usual stop for the usual things. BA-ah, that's the very kind of reason I run a back up tail light in the first place. Some day I'll learn.

Coming home it was 68 F with winds out of the NW at 10. Couldn’t exactly bomb the down-hill on the work end of my commute with rush hour traffic like it was, but got a decent run out of it, 38.4 mph. Bike feels like it’s doing some kind of strange “clank” from time to time when shifting. Stopped and tried wiggling some things around, but everything felt tight. On the way through town I went straight through the circle and hung the first left. Spotted another cyclist in front of me on a road bike in street clothes. Tried to catch him, but the harder I tried, the more he increased the distance. Here I am dressed fo' schnizzle (I think I'm too old to use that right) in my zoomy Bell helmet, Primal Wear Dragon’s L’Air jersey, Pearl Izumi shorts, and Sidi shoes and couldn’t catch a guy in street clothes. :o Almost went two blocks out of my way afraid somebody would see me. Luckily he turned off at the mini-mall. ;) :D

BE-UTIFUL! Probably about 62 with no wind. First day I've been able to ride without my windproof jacket. Oak Ridge, TN...Hwy 58.

vtjim 04-11-05 06:33 AM

28F this morning. Nice and sunny though. Good ride. Flocks of geese in a local watershed area.

On Friday I stopped and interacted with a kitty who was sunning itself on the trail pavement. Friendly little guy.

balto charlie 04-11-05 06:39 AM

great day to ride, mid to upper 40's but a little cold on the bare legs. Weekend riding was superb! Ride home should be warm. My bike is crying real tears as it needs a rebuild.

Cycled with my wife and son to their school, then on to my work. Comfortable and sunny. Happy trails!

pj7 04-11-05 07:23 AM

The ride in this morning was great, rode the first time last week and it felt good to be back in the saddle. Low 40F's with no wind. More traffic than what I remembered from last week but then again, at 4:30-5:30 in the morning traffic is still lacking. Made good time, 11 miles in a little under an hour and arrived at work wide awake and ready to take on the world. Now I'm sitting in my office looking at my bike and *****ing at the clock to hurry up and hit 3:30 so I can hop on it again.

SaskCyclist 04-11-05 07:38 AM

Contrary to what seems to be the norm this morning the commute was excellent. Clear without any wind and -1C. It must really be spring because the ice on Wascana Lake broke up and melted with the heavy wind over the weekend. Friday was a little bit of a chore on the way home....my wife brought my two daughters ( 1 and 2 years) down with the carrier (she had errands to do) and I was going to bike home with the girls in tow. The kids weren't exactly impressed. I get about 3 km from home, hit a pot hole and the rear tire is flat in seconds. "q the screaming babes". I didn't realize I needed to check air pressure a lot more often on my new hibrid than on my old MTB. The pressure in the front was down to 40 psi so I imagine the back one wasn't much different. It should be up around 90 to 100. Anyways, a trip to the lbs for some tools on Saturday and I was back on the road with a lesson learned.

I hope everone had a great weekend.

EnigManiac 04-11-05 07:58 AM

Sunny but cool and a bit breezy this morning, but being Canadian I don't even notice until it's -20c with two feet of snow and polar bears lying across the bike lane (hehehe). It was the cagers who must have been hibernating all winter and finally founf their car that were the ptoblem this morning: four close-calls including one b*t*h who veered right into my bike lane, missing me by about three inches as she sped 20km/h over the limit (at least) and then up ahead of me she did it again. Wasn't like her crappy little car was wide or anything, but I'll guarantee she was on either on the phone, doing her makeup, drinking coffee or eating breakfast all while being late for work. I almost wish there HAD been a transit strike like they were promising but averted yesterday. With more cars on the road they wouldn't be able to drive fast.

caloso 04-11-05 09:49 AM

Perfectly uneventful ride to the office this morning. Just the way I like it.

jnbacon 04-11-05 10:00 AM

My first day riding in more than a week. I took a break to let my Achilles tendinitis heal. I could feel it was still not 100%, but I've made some changes to my set up to see if I can take the stress off a bit, and I've been stretching, as well as doing calf strengthening exercises. So, I hope that keeps it healthy.

The ride in was beautiful. It's light by 5:30 now, so I've got to start earlier -- even at 6:30, I was starting to feel a little too warmed by the sun, and it only gets hotter from here.

AND I'M RIDING AGAIN!!!!

PaulH 04-11-05 10:17 AM

About a mile and a half into my morning ride, as I mashed down hard on an uphill after a traffic light, I heard a loud crack. The spider had broken. I walked the bike back home and drove in, arriving late and tired. I'm hoping my bike shop will be able to fix it quickly, as rain is expected later this week and my backup bike lacks fenders. There is some concern that this spider may not be available in the US and it will not be practical to adapt a local one.

Nice commute. 30F light west winds. Should be around 60F for the ride home.

ahpook 04-11-05 11:22 AM

Very nice ride in today, crisp and cool (60F).
Beginning to think I need to add some more AM miles - I have a route that takes me
from 10.1 to 13.5 but it's an ugly slog. 33 minutes just isn't enough time on the bike
before work starts :-)

One bad thing about this time of year, at least in my area- the pine forests of the Southeast US;
is the damn pine tree pollen that coats everything with a thick layer of sneezy greenish-yellow powder.

You can see huge clouds of the stuff billowing out of the trees when a strong gust of wind blows through.
I have to spend thirty minutes blowing my nose and putting in eyedrops when I get to work in the morning.

Just had to vent...
thanks.

ahpook 04-11-05 08:18 PM

Gorgeous weather on the way home tonight but man, if I don't end up with a slow-leak
flat on the rear tire it's through pure dumb luck. There were three new patches of glass that
appeared since the weekend, all in merge areas and all of 'em I didn't see until it was too
late due to preoccupation with traffic.

Whats that mantra for small aircraft pilots? "operate, navigate, communicate" Seems
applicable somehow .. ;)
