around 40 °F and heavily overcast; rain on the way, it is said. the ride in was ordinary, with the ordinary mixture of considerate and inconsiderate motorists, chirping birds and a few stray cyclists.

Got another late start this morning and had to endure heat and traffic on the way in. No bad encounters, except for some overly polite cagers motioning me into on coming traffic. Happily, this is the last day of my dangerous highway underpass commute. Taking a week off then moving to a different office downtown. All bike paths and neighborhood streets from now on...

Didn't ride today...
Hitting the pawn shops again to see if my Marin Larskpur (stolen 1 1/2 weeks ago) shows up.

Now that's an incentive package.

Today's commute was a thing of beauty. I didn't have to get to work until 1, so I rode to the bike shop (9 miles) so they could do the crank swap they tried to do earlier but had the wrong bottom bracket for. (my JTS is now a triple). There is just something special about rolling up to the bike shop on your bike and having them work on it while you walk to a nearby restraunt for some lunch. I got back to the bike shop and they had it done. The guy was pretty cool. I told him no to the new chain (big ring went up to 52 from 48), and that I would avoid the big-big and big-next to big to avoid the cost of a new chain. When I got back he just told me he added 2 links from his extra parts drawer no charge :D. Happy day. (still will avoid big-big).

I hopped back on my bike and rode to work and got here a bit early (hence the posting). On the way from the shop to work, It started either hailing tiny little white balls of ice along with spitting rain. The noise was pretty cool. Unfortunately I didn't have my jacket and was only wearing a sweatshirt. Its now hanging in my locker to dry. Only bad thing about today's commute was that I broke the retaining pin on my bike computer, so there's nothing to hold it snug anymore. I guess its time for a bit of tape and a permanent mount.

Bike is nearly done. Waiting on a rear derailleur and a wide-range cassette and then I'll call it done and post some pics.

cold morning. I was getting use to warmer days, not so this AM. Upper 30'sF/3C. Still wore shorts but wish I hadn't. Should be a warmer day ahead.

RicardoJM 05-02-05 07:33 AM

A bit nippy this morning with temps in the low 30s and a slight headwind. The sky is overcast and spitting mist. I managed to forget my helmet this morning, I don't recall the last time that happened. There were four others out on bikes this morning. The weather is supposed to hold like this through the day with our high being in the 40s.

Sunny this morning, but unseasonably cold in northern IL. I thought I'd take a slightly different route to stay out of the wind. So I took a forest preserve bike path I've never tried before. I quickly found myself in maze of twisty little limestone passages, frequented by the horsey set. Rough and yuck. :(

Planning on the highway this afternoon.

Road my new touring bike to work for the first time. A great bike in traffic. Only problem is there seemed to be plenty of rude, agressive drivers out today. One passed me really close on rte. 1, zoomed past me to get about 20 feet ahead and gave me quite a scare. :(

My first commute since April 19th. Had a little vacation on Oahu. :)

High 30s F here this morning. Headwind. Not too bad though. Felt good to be back on the cycle. Passed a couple of guys on mountain bikes. One had a huge over-stuffed backpack and was holding a briefcase in his right hand. Hmm!

Chilly, yet invigorating. My motto for the week is "a clean butt is a happy butt". :)

Nice weather but I had a bit of an equipment scare that made today's ride in slower than I was really happy with. I was finding it really difficult to shift up to the big chainring, and even when I got it to shift the front der was rubbing like it was trying to derail back down. I spent a few minutes flipping out about this and then it struck me: New bike! New cables! The cables are stretching... just give the barrel adjuster a crank and take out the slack. Four or five half-turns and sho'nuff -- shifts beautifully again. That was the only real problem but it was enough to throw me off balance and take it easy for the rest of the ride, causing me to miss a few "easy" lights. Gonna be a nice warm one for the ride home though.

Zin 05-02-05 11:55 AM

Cold this morning. Temp. was 22F when I headed out the door. Cold and sunny. Felt more like November.

Oh yeah, speaking of mechanical failures, last Thu on the way home, I was sitting back on my seat, pumping up a long hill and . . . . CRACK! . . . seatpost bolt completely sheared off. Fortunately, I did not crash, but then I had to peddle about 2 mi the rest of the way home, standing up. That is difficult!

this happened to me once and I know what you mean "hard to pedal" standing up. My post was a cheapy Kalloy....never again. All I did was drop off of a curb and BAM, the bolt sheared off. I scraped my leg on the seatpost. What was your post?

mtessmer 05-02-05 02:07 PM

Man, this is early March weather. Still, I got extra miles in by having a dental appointment this morning before coming to the office. It's not warming up any so I'm not doing any extra miles going home though. It's suppose to warm up as the week progresses... we'll see.

Gugek 05-02-05 04:24 PM

Longtime lurker, first-time poster, six months of bike commuting.

Slightly chilly in the morning leg (40 degrees), 11.5 miles. Started out in morning twilight but the sun came up pretty fast. The return leg was same route, didn't want to push it so did the commute in an average time, it was a beautiful ride none the less.

No problems with cagers.

No other commuters or riders sighted. =(

Sprinkles AM, PM-lunch run and return trip. A very nice ride.

ollo_ollo 05-02-05 09:59 PM

It rained overnight but let up just long enough for my morning commute. It was 56 so I just wore a wool sweater over my work clothes & had a comfy ride in. Getting ready for a trip to visit relatives & got the old Motobecane Grand Jubile all cleaned up, polished, lubed & adjusted over the weekend. Wanted to bring along a good (but not expensive) bike so I can get in a few rides along the way. Don

Cool this morning (40's) with some patchy frost on the grassy areas, wore my commuter jacket, full-finger gloves, and skull cap. Although I was absolutely craving carbs last night (and satisfied that desire with a big pizza), I felt bloated and slow this morning with little strength in my legs. I saw two other riders and had a surprisingly fast ride in, the cool, crisp morning air will be missed with the onslaught of summer's humidity. Coming home yesterday, trying to beat the approaching storm, I hitched a ride with a roadie. I tailed him at about 19 mph for a couple of miles when I felt warmed up enough to take a turn at the lead. I bumped it up to 20-21 mph and pulled in front but soon fatigued in the constant headwind. I pushed hard with this guy right on my wheel for a couple of miles when he passed me, barely breathing, and with a smile said "thanks, that was fun". He pulled away as I faded and soon became a red dot on the horizon. Although I'm still getting back into shape and was encumbered with a backpack and my slower, heavier bike, I could tell this guy was a real athelte-very impressive.

Past couple of weeks have been horrible for commuting. Meetings, having to do some traveling and just plain nuts! I am hoping that some normalcy comes back to me in the upcoming week!

Anyway, the commute in this morning was nice, cool with temps in only the low 30's but no wind and it seems like the air was fresh.

vtjim 05-03-05 06:05 AM

40F and sunny. Nice ride again. Saw a flock of cormorants (aquatic bird) floating in the lake. The woodlands are beginning to green up. Trees are budding and the undergrowth has sprouted and is growing.

I have less than one month to go until my one-year anniversary of not driving a car to work. :)

genel 05-03-05 07:25 AM

Cold again this morning, 34F at home. Dug out the winter gear and was plenty warm. Nice day to ride. Overcast and little wind. Still some snow in the road cracks from an afternoon snow shower yesterday. Ride home yesterday was brutal. Very cold headwind (15-20), and I was wearing light weight clothes.

Road traffic this morning was unusually heavy. But only one truck made a close pass.
