Same weather as * jack * -- and same predicament with the students. I don't know which campus you work on, but they're doing construction on a bridge on west campus that means I have to climb the stairs in front of the chapel part way through the ride. I'll be happy when that's over. Weaving through the temporary fence openings they've put up is enough of a hassle for this newbie.

Today was the first day that I remembered to reset the timer on my cyclo-computer to see how long my commute actually takes. I started off pretty slow, but did catch the lights nicely, so I'd imagine it's fairly accurate -- 22 minutes and 43 seconds from my driveway to the elevator of my building.

As I stepped in my office, awake and alert from the ride, I thought to myself this is why I commute. It just feels so @#$%^ great!

Great weather for riding. The humidity (from Katrina's outer rain bands) is gone and the temperature will be ~90F (32C) later today.

The ride wasn't as pleasant as usual. I have an aunt and a few cousins in New Orleans. I spoke with a cousin last night who said everyone made it out of town and they have been staying in a hotel in Houston, TX since the day before Katrina hit the Gulf Coast. Problem is - they have nothing to go back to. :( Thinking about them sure put a damper on the ride.

A very good morning. It was foggy, and cool, low 60's, absolutely perfect. The ride went fine as well as I hit the stop light. It turns out today is the first day of school at the grade school that I pass by. A complete SUV quagmire for a block, but other than a bit more concentration, no problems. Time to work, about 10 minutes.

Glad that you had no problems but personally I'd rather ride past a bar at 2:05 am than an elementary school at 7:45 am.

My own ride was very relaxed. I've been riding less and running more lately as I prepare for a December marathon. This morning I had a speed workout so I was pretty spent when I climbed on the bike. But a nice easy spin to move the legs and keep the blood flowing was just perfect.

Foggy down here too. BTW I was born in Oxnard... not too far from you.

We get fog occasionally over here, this morning it was unusually heavy so the mist soaked me. I took it easy on the decents and pushed it on the hills to make up so I got in a good time and averaged 18.4 mph, 1.2 mph faster than yesterday.

Put the lights back on the Bianchi this week. Don't need them yet, so no batteries. Just the lights.

Nice commute this morning. Cool and breezy with bright sun. Managed to stay out of the School bus quagmire on the rural road I ride into town. I don't like playing "leap frog" with them.

dmarcoul 08-31-05 03:16 PM

no work, but ran some errands. library to pick up notes from the underground, bank to deposit, school to fill out graduation application (yes!!) and then liquor store for some ciroc vodka and red wine. some nasty nasty winds today, a branch almost fell on me, and i was pounding up a hill when this headwind just came out of nowhere and almost pushed me backwards, sheesh.

but, when the sun broke through it was a beautiful day.

RonH 08-31-05 05:33 PM

The ride home was weird. More cars than usual. Some intersections were backed up so I couldn't even turn safely.
When I passed a gas station about 1.5 miles from my house the cars were lined up in the street waiting to turn into the station. Reminded me of 1974. It almost felt like someone was going to run me down because I wasn't in line to buy gas.
I noticed that the price for regular at this station was $2.69 this morning and it was $2.89 this afternoon. What will tomorrow be like? Crazy drivers!

vrkelley 08-31-05 07:27 PM

Excellent ride both ways. Fall is in the air and my HR is begining to stabilize. Speeds are slowly inching back up to previous levels...as long as that dang HRM doesn't go off for more than a few minutes!

I'm so sorry to hear about your aunt and cousins, though I'm glad they are safe. We have evacuees all the way here in Austin, another 150 miles from Houston. I wish the news was better but it sure sounds like these folks will be suffering for a long time. :(

Good ride to work and home . Still a little rain on the way to work today, but none on the way home. It was a little muddy on the ride today .But still a good ride .
Have a good nite .

Turned out to be a good ride home yesterday. Lots of wind though, but it was dry. Had my first object thrown at me yesterday. A couple of immature adults threw a half eaten hot dog at me. They missed, and I lost them while chasing them after they blew a red light and turned down a bunch of side streets.

Good ride in today. No half eaten hotdogs thrown at me.

luckysnafu 09-01-05 06:15 AM

Had a nice ride in today, nice and cool actually, upper 60s. Going to be in the low 90's again today, so it will be a warm ride home this afternoon. Had a very strong head wind last night, most likely I will see it again. Averaged about 18mph on the way home though :)

rickwilliams 09-01-05 06:17 AM

The ride in this morning was wonderful. The weather was cool and clear with almost no wind. The only downside is driver behavior, as some others have noted. I'm noticing increasing anger and impatience directed at me. I expect it has something to do with gas prices (this morning $2.99, $3.09, and $3.19 at one station). If so, the anger is misplaced. By not using gas, I'm helping to keep demand and prices down. Drivers should love me.

Map tester 09-01-05 06:36 AM

Nice ride in. Had a woman in a car say "all right!" and waved to me this morning. Since I am certain it was not in reference to my physique  , I can only attribute it to the rising gas prices. I saw at least three cyclists with their children riding to school this morning. Maybe there is hope for cycling. :D

Quickbeam 09-01-05 06:53 AM

Nice day to ride. Cool and with very little wind. Made good time. But when I was riding out from my house an unidentified stinging insect got into my helemt through one of the vent holes and stung me right in the head. Little bastard!

I am eagerly anticipating the coming of Autumn and cooler mornings.
This morning the temps were great, I made excellent time, life is good.

A motorist almost right-hooked me this morning, because they misjudged my speed.
I anticipated the bonehead to make the move, so I was ready. I just slowed down, let them
turn in front of me, and then I pulled in behind them and drafted for a block or two.

Walkafire 09-01-05 07:55 AM

Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr somebody stole my heater!

I gots to buy some long pants next payday!!!!

SaskCyclist 09-01-05 09:28 AM

A great cool morning ride. Full sun and 3C with a little head wind. I can't wait for fall to really get into gear. There is nothing like fall in Saskatchewan.

caloso 09-01-05 10:05 AM

I was running late this morning but thanks to a tailwind and lucky timing with the lights on 21st Street, I was able to make up almost the entire amount. A good sign for the day!

truman 09-01-05 10:08 AM

In a word: Greatness.

jyossarian 09-01-05 10:51 AM

Hmmm...I'm not sure which I'd prefer, either

"A couple of immature adults threw a half eaten hot dog at me." - ridealot

OR

"...when I was riding out from my house an unidentified stinging insect got into my helemt through one of the vent holes and stung me right in the head." - Quickbeam

The hotdog missed, but that means there's some people driving around who like to assault complete strangers. On the otherhand, the bug drew blood...

ahpook 09-01-05 10:54 AM

Personal Best today: 9.3 mi / 28:03 min / 19.9 mph average

WOOT.

How did I do it? Good vehicle traffic flow, good tire pressure, two strategic right-turn fakeys and one well-timed half-fakey meant I never put a foot down. I'm sorry I ever badmouthed that maneuver. When executed properly (and I admit that only one of mine today really falls into that category) it's safe, mostly legal and FAST.

Very freaky incident on the way home yesterday...

Heading north on very densely and high speed multilane road in narrow outside lane. Hear car roaring very hard behind me, passes me incredibly close while swerving toward the right, hits curb very hard about 10ft in front of me, both hubcaps go flying as car bounces off to the left about 6ft in dust and smoke cloud. Impact on curb also caught some under bumper air dam plastic thing (width of car) which was sliding in road in front of me (hubcaps flew over sidewalk). I managed to swerve and avoid it. Car continued to tear onward swerved further right into right turn lane, then rapidly swerved out of it and across three lanes to the left. Must have been going at least 70mph. Luckily it missed me by about 2ft or so.
