Slow ride in today. I got stuck behind a cyclist doing half my speed and couldn't be bothered to go around him. Then he starts filtering and slows down the entire lane, instead of just me. Calgary drivers are very patient and forgiving on a Monday morning. The sunrise today is spectacular. Hues of pink and gold washing over the snowy mountains, full moon hanging low in the sky. |
It was my birthday commute today. Very nice, 50F, light wind, light traffic, and a stop by the bagel shop.
|
Good ride to work and home. I do not think any one else
is commuting to my work place , but me .That is good, I get the bike rack all to my self. At lease for now. Have a good nite . |
Morning ride was tough, there was a head-wind of over 15 mph ... I had to fight it the whole way since I work south of my house today...... lol
ANyway, it took me 4 more minutes than usual to get to work. But I made it alive !!!!! and it didn't rain !!!! WOOOT !! Average Speed: 60 / 35 * 5.2 = 9.1 mph suxors. |
First ride in this week. Pretty warm for Jan (50s already) and wet this morning. No rain though, so that was nice. This was only my second commute this year, I have been slacking for these first two weeks with the rain and being so busy. I am hoping to ride the rest of this week though since it will be so warm here. Looking forward to a nice ride home this afternoon.

55 degrees this morning and overcast. Nearly ran over by a lady driving in near dark conditions with no headlights.
|
Great ride in, temps around 34f, little traffic, and best of all I missed the incoming stormfront!
|
Another crisp morning ride around 0F degrees. Beautiful morning. Blue skies and a nice sunrise.
A fellow crazy fool got on the trail ahead of me. We were dressed similarly with ski goggles and what-not. I stayed behind him for a while, then a pile of clothing fell out from somewhere on him. I think he was carrying it under his coat. He had to stop so that was the last I saw of him since I was almost at my "exit." Tomorrow is going to be interesting to say the least. Sleet, freezing rain, and wind. Could be an inch of ice. (Studded tires!) |
Nice ride in today. Forgot to put my gloves on when I left and a mile later I was forced to put them on cuz it was so cold. It's supposed to rain tomorrow and me with no rear fender. Think I'll go shopping online today for some Freddy Fenders. Won't have them for tomorrow, but I'm sure it'll rain a few more times this year.

It was 32F this AM, a far cry from the 60's enjoyed last week. Legs felt strong. 1st commute since last Weds. (took a little time off). I guess winter's back. Charlie
PS: T-7 weeks for the closing of my train station :( |
Oh man, I'm so tired. I got to work an hour early to prep for a course I'm teaching today. I hate mornings. My morning Coke just isn't working. I may need to have a second one. Non-descript ride in today. I won't be heading home tonight until after 10 p.m., so I hope I don't fall asleep at the wheel/handlebar.

About 40 degrees this morning, but the gusting headwind made it like riding through Jell-O. First ride since I traded my backpack for a trunk bag. I think I'm gonna like it better this way. With a fat backpack, getting down on the drops doesn't make a remarkable difference in your aero profile, but - to coin a phrase - that's all behind me now. :| Don't have the temptation to bring a lot of extra crap either since the trunk bag is so much smaller than the backpack.
Annoyingly loud train lady was reasonably well-behaved today, with only a few short shouted-to-the-other-end-of-the-dang-car conversations, and no intimately detailed cell phone chats, so I got that going for me, which is nice. |
Bailed yesterday, was 15F with 20+mph breeze. Driving the jeep with the blast furnace heater was just too inviting :-)
Today was a nice balmy 25F and only 10mph headwind. I've been leaving a bit later and it sure is nice to ride as the sun comes up. Every morning I ride in front of the police station. This am a police cruiser was pulling out....the policeman was waving like he was really excited to see me. I waved back. Never hurts to have those guys on your side :-) |
I haven't cycled to work since Friday due to a knee injury. Needless to say its driving me nuts. Learing to drive again is hard. Learning to deal with other drivers and how they treat cars vs. bikes is harder. I can't take it much longer, but will probably stay off the bike at least until next Tuesday. Help.

Hmmmm... I was riding in this morning, got halfway in and realized the I forgot my keys (at first I thought I lost them because my bag was unzipped and open but a quick call home to my wife told me they were on the counter). So, I rode back home, got the keys from my wife (making her late to work too) and rode to the office. Well, I got a hair over 20 miles in this morning already at 14F/-10C with an inch of snowy glaze. I stayed plenty warm, except my feet, they felt like they were going to fall off. I got over it. I hope the rest of my day goes a little smoother.
|
Very cold this morning. Temp for the ride was 46F. The only wind however was that which I broke, so except for the biting cold, the ride was pleasant. It took about 10 minutes to get to the office.

My RD hanger has been straightened out at the LBS, so I'm back at commuting. :D Man, I really missed it. It was another beautiful San Diego morning, and warmer than I expected. And I'm back at my standing and climbing over the only hill (a half mile bump at about 5-6%, really) along the way. Using a 42-23 now instead of a 42-25. :)

14F with some fresh snow. Toes were cold because I wore the wrong shoes home from work yesterday. I'll have my Gortex lined hiking shoes on for the ride home.
There was about 3 inches of snow on the road shoulder after the snow plow cleared the road. I ride the shoulder on this road to keep out of the fast traffic. I rode my geared MTB and used a low gear because of the increased rolling resistance of tires in fresh snow. My usual commuter bike is a singlespeed with the current gear appropriate for dry gravel shoulders. I'm thinking I might want a slightly lower winter gear. |
Temperature was 48 with a forecast of rain showers. No showers but a lovely ride in. Enjoying this weather for my commute. A cold front is moving in today so tomorrow, we may be back to reality.
|
Cool and damp (45F and 90%RH). It's predicted to rain this evening so I was glad to get out early and get in an extra 15-20 miles at dawn this morning. First race of the year on Saturday so I need to keep the mileage up and the pounds off.

Nice ride today! Sunny, 25°F, Moderate traffic.
In front of me was some "Kid" (22 years old maybe) riding with headband, jeans, black shoes and toeclips. He was pushing a tall gear on a beater and was all over the road. A cab had to push into the other lane just to get past this kid. The Green Line Trolly comes down Comm.Ave and cuts right across the entersection, I thought this kid was gonna run dead smack into the thing . I was thinking to myself "is he gonna stop?". I went by him once and that only seemed to make him ride faster...right through entersections full bore . This kid was the kind of rider that gives us all a bad name . |
It was a rainy windy ride home. One of those days where people ask, you're going to ride the bike in this."
|
Public Officials...are human as well! a weird start today. on the way in, i opted to travel by the rail-road tracks-trails that emerge behind a long closed Jamesway Channel etc strip mall (WalMart to be). there was a police car and officer standing outside, urinating, but zipped as i approached to pass. he stated something like "you would figure there would be privacy back here", i responded with 'have a good day'. if the tides were changed, and i was relieving self publically, i could be arrested for "indecent exposure" or something!
rest of rides were eventless, warmer, and wind on the back on return |

Ride home was the usual. Lots of salt on the on/off ramps on the FDR MUP so it's good to know the city clears and salts the MUP although it's probably on the low priority list when it snows.
Following are comments from my neighbors when I got home: "That's rare. You've got lights on the front AND back and you even have a bell! All the cyclists in Ireland have them, but not here." "Isn't it too cold for that?" and looking at my bike. I answered it was perfect weather for a ride. |
Fighting rain and 30mph+ winds all the way back to the truck wasn't exactly fun tonight. But it was better than sitting in traffic!
|
Weather forecast for today was sleet and freezing rain. Instead, by the time I rode home, it had warmed up to 38°F, and it was hardly raining.
What a rip-off! Boring. But still better than driving the car! ;) |
Ride in was ok, 40 degrees, negligible wind, cloudy but dry. Ride home was 50 degrees with a 9MPH tailwind. Tailwind was good , as it was raining pretty good. My goretex raingear and gloves were good, but sneakers got wet. Tomorrow morning I am riding to work in the rain, something I usualy avoid. Time to drop one excuse. I got out my Army issue rubber overboots and they fit in my toeclips if I loosen the strap enough. They're ugly, but waterproof. When i go clipless I'll get some shoecovers, but ugly boots will work for tomorrow. My coworkers think I'm nuts already, I guess tomorrow I'll prove them right. :)

wet!!

Ride home was uneventful. Stopped at a local pub for a burger. I've been commuting for about a month now. I really like it. :D Nonetheless, I still never choose to extend my commute since going only 3 miles makes it completely unnecessary to carry water. One less thing to deal with.
