A couple inches of snow overnight had cars sliding through intersections with alarming regularity. Things didn't get dicey for me until I got on some of the busier streets, and the mounds of sludge kept pushing my front wheel away. I almost bailed half a dozen times in 4 blocks, then said f*** it and took the lane with vengeance. I;m battling a cold, so my speed is down a bit. Bleagh.

Wrassled my self back out of Lazy Mode this morning. I drove in on Friday and was lazy again on Monday. I hate it when I drive, but sometimes it's just too tempting while fumbling around in a pre-coffee fog. Must work harder to resist.
Was a great ride in... temps were really strange this am. It was a balmy 48F on my patio, 38F on the sign 1/2 way in, and 26F at the office. Pretty large variance in a 6 mile range. Got my new CatEye[LD-1000] blinkie and hung it on the seatpost this morning. That mutha puts out some massive photons. I thought my Performance ultra bright blinkie was bright, but it pales in comparison during the side by side test against the CatEye. Found a quarter this morning. Stopped at the light to cross the six lane and there it was. There were 4 more pennies on the way up the hill, but it's not worth 4 cents to stop on the hill. They will be there for days to come. Looking forward to the ride home! |
It was a bit cool this morning but still bright and sunny with no wind. The ride to work took about 10 minutes.
I came to the stop light this morning and it was red. I was ten yards behind a Hummer, when it turned green. I was going straight through the intersection and he was turning right. After the light turned green the Hummer stayed still until I had passed him and way most of the way across the street. Then after I was safely out of harms way, he (it?) made the right turn. Welcome to Camarillo. I find my biggest complaint on my short commute here is people that constantly want to give me the right of way, it gets sort of annoying at times. As a firm believer of first to the line first to go, I wish sometimes that people wouldn't be so considerate. |
Ugg. Nearly joined the Great Peleton in the Sky this morning at 21st and Q. I was anticipating the green and a car coming from the left was trying to beat the red. Stupid on my part. Stupid, stupid, stupid. Luckily, I was able to pull an emergency 90 deg. right turn and I lived to ride another day.
Don't be stupid like me. Wait for the green. |
caloso, glad it turned out okay.
A nice beautiful day out today. I woke up early, but then decided I was still a bit sore from my Saturday century, so I didn't want to ride pre-commute. So my commute was my first ride since Saturday. Took it at about 80% of normal commuting effort (which itself is pretty relaxed except at hills) at first, but then when I reached the hill on the way in, I felt as good as normal and had a blast. Not that I wasn't having a blast the rest of the way... one doesn't have to be going fast to be having fun. (Though going fast doesn't hurt.) |

Flat last night going home. First one in about 6 months. Gave a talk at my son's school this morning, so I was late going to work. Another flat, other tire. Used the spare tube, had it all pumped up and was taking the pump head off the valve stem and zing, the valve goes flying off into the ether. Pull off tube and tire, use patch to fix old tube with the hole in it, got everything back together. Hear something strange--one front spoke broken--pulled it off and stashed it in bag. Decided I deserved it, so I walked the bike across the street to one of the best barbeque places in town.
I'm much better now. :D |

More damp and chilly this morning. No sun--kind of back to normal for January. Looks like some snowflakes coming down for the ride home. Should be fun!

Caloso, That is one of the great things about this forum. We can learn from others.
Thanks for telling us about it. Another 35 F ride in and 60 degrees home. I’ll have to pack my winter coat on the bike rack, but that’s a problem I like to have. It’s a beautiful day. |
Plus I got a good south wind to blow me home.
|
eventless (more or less) both ways today, played the turtle (bike) - rabbit (car) game between traffic lites for 5 or so blocks (tortis/hare sp?). did stop at a new bike shop down-town, sells custom lowriders. shop has pool-table in back, maybe to just hang around there, talk bikes/life/etc. 100% commute to /from work for january/2006!

Um...this morning was really nice. I kind of got caught out of my element this evening. I had a late afternoon dentist appointment. I intended to go back to work afterwards. Dentist tormented me to the point that I went to the bar instead. After a while I noticed it was dark outside. Didn't feel like going back to work to get my lights. Bad boy. I admit it. Rode home drunk and without lights.
Special note to those following my plight: The dogs were not in their yard. I stopped and pissed in their driveway. I know how significant such things are to dogs. I'm sure I'll regret this post tomorrow. Anyway, have a good evening...even if you are a dentist. |

so I reached for the mini-pump I got for XMAS. WTF! good, that's done. This morning misty, wet, cool and very strong wind in my face- probably steady 25 mph wind all the way in. Met another commuter on the bike path and we commiserated about the wind. (Deep down inside we were loving it.) The ride home was cold with icy snow coming down making a slick thin coating on the pavement. The studded snow tires ate it up. My winter gear keeps me perfectly warm, perfectly dry, I'm very visible with lights and blinkies and reflective vest- couldn't be happier. |

Great ride to work and home. I used the bike with the studded tires today but the temperature never fell far enough for anything to freeze. I hope the rest of the winter is this warm. Have a good night.
|
A nice brisk ride home. Calm, uneventful, peaceful. Only thing was that I found when I got back that my LED taillight was really dim. No big deal, swapped batteries, and it's good as new again.

What a beautiful morning! Clear skies, 30f, and no wind. The earlier daylight make crossing the river alot of fun, though I'm now forced to slow down and oo and ah about how nice the sunrise looks reflecting on the water.

The last 3 days have been good for commuting. There's a very light layer of snow on the trail in the morning, then it melts away in the afternoon. Very warm, strange weather for Vermont.
I ran into a guy I met back in December on a snowy evening ride home. We exchanged greetings and agreed that conditions are good. Nice to see some people are still keeping up with the winter commutes. His ride is less than half of mine though. I saw tracks in the snow from last night, too. Someone lives near me and rides to and from Burlington every day it seems, but at odd hours of the day. Doesn't ride in a straight line. Makes me wonder... :) |

I made it in without any major dramas. I did however start experiencing head games right around point where I got the flat last time. I starting thinking "Not again" I started bouncing on the tire to make sure it was still firm, it was. I guess I just had to get use to my rear wheel again. I starting using wifey's when my spoke broke :D. Other than that, things were good...a bit slick on the bridges but manageable. Hey Buzzman, maybe we can work out some weekend rides when the weather is better. |
Ride home last night was uneventful. This morning the cabs couldn't wait to pass me, honking at me from behind which is odd since the only vehicles allowed to be behind me are buses. I ride in the bus lane and from 7 am - 7 pm, no cars are allowed in the bus lane except to make right turns. Since they're not supposed to be in the lane, I ignored them, took the whole lane to myself and kept going. Sometimes, you gotta show 'em who's boss.

Good ride in this morning. The unseasonably warm winter has discouraged me from getting some clear lens glasses, but this morning's freezing temps, wind, and dust have given me new determination.

Had last week off for a trip to Washington state to see the family. No bike.
Commuted monday and had a nice trip. Monday night was sick as a dog Tuesday called in sick This morning hit the streets again and had a decent ride. The main problem being exhausted from my stomach troubles from yesterday. Took it nice and slow. |
Great ride in today. 56F, light wind at the start - that's fully 20 degrees warmer than when I started in Monday, and just about the same as my Monday ride home. Very strange winter indeed...
Rode the entire distance from my house - 15.04 miles according to my handy-dandy computer - for the first time. It was pretty darn awesome, except for dodging an ambulance and fire truck passing me in a construction zone. I rode a new route for the back half this morning that takes me most of the way on a residential street - 4 lanes divided, with access into a number of subdivisions along the way, but no major intersections. I discovered that at least some drivers in North Texas are very cyclist-friendly. I haven't done enough cycling around here to know from experience, but I've been told that's rare. I think I like that route. Another beautiful sunrise as I pulled through the security gate. I'm lovin' this! |

Big 20mph tailwind on the way home last night.. gotta love it when that happens. Needless to say it was a zippy ride home. Temp was 56F so I enjoyed my first Tshirt ride of the winter.
This morning was a chilly 22F, but that was offset by a huge glowing red sunrise. I believe that red in the monring is a sign of an impending storm. They are calling for snow this afternoon so there may be some truth to that. Saw another commuter this morning at the start. We blazed down the big hill together, then he peeled right and i continued straight. Nice to see another crazy biker at 6am. |
Yesterday's snow is disappearing fairly quickly, and I hope to be on skinny tires again by Monday, maybe even Friday. I feel like crap today. I'm fighting a cold and OD'd on Nyquil last night. I couldn't sleep at all - it was this horrible feeling that I was being dragged down, and my mind was fighting it. "No, no, stay awake" my brain says. My brain sucks. It should succumb to drugs like everyone else's.

Good, fast commute this morning. ~28F for temp, so not too bad. I leave too early too see a nice sunrise...I arrive at 6:30-6:40 and just start to see some faint light on the horizon...sunrise is at 7:15 or so.
Been commuting since Nov. sporadically...going to try for 100% commute for Feb! |

South East in a town named richland and the area around it is called the Tri Cities. The town's claim to faim is the Hanford Nuclear Reservation. I have a bad stomach and I still have no clue what caused this problem. All I ate before getting sick was ground turkey tacos. Maybe I undercooked it? Strangely enough, riding seemed to help calm my slightly upset stomach this morning. |
Strong headwind this morning. Probably [insert diety of choice] giving me my just retribution for last nights antics.
