Dublin, Ireland. What a slog this morning. My 19km commute was a pain, when a few days ago it was a breeze - and very little difference in conditions between today and other days (except it was a bit colder, but that's normally better)..... moan

From what I heard on the weather forecast, y'all made need to watch out for Hurricane Ophelia! It looks like she could be headed northeast across the Atlantic right into your neck of the woods.

Did my first grocery run today. I just started using my new commuter bike (Giant FCR 3) and it rides like a dream. The grocery store is only a mile away, but I felt proud being independent of motorized transport. The only thing that bothered me was leaving the bike when I went in the store. I'm still figity about locking up my bike and leaving it alone cause I love it and dont want it to get stolen. I went as far as removing my frame pump and seat post bag and carrying them with me in the store, as well as removing the front wheel and locking it up with the back one and frame to the bike rack. My roomate says i'm over zealous. I just want my bike to be there, accessories and all, when I get back.

I just stumbled onto bikeforms.net, a way cool place. I have been bike commuting on and off for 15 years. I resumed during the summer of 2003 after a 5-year hiatus during which my commute was over a toll bridge with no pedestrian/bicycle access.

I should have ridden my bike today, but I opted for an extra 45 minutes of sleep. Also (this is just an excuse), I got totally drenched riding home last night. There was something like 3 inches of rain in 45 minutes. My gear didn't dry out over night, and I really should grease and lube the essentials on my bike before I ride it again.

I have been documenting my commuting in these two blogs. Enjoy.

Hi there; I used to do a rush hour commute along the coast from Blackrock through to Ballsbridge, all flat but soooo windy..And the wee garda on patrol at the UK embassy always used to tell me off if I ever went onto the footpaths to escape the queuing traffic. Funny, it's something I would never even think about doing now...Is the Dublin traffic still so unforgiving? It really has to be one of the worst places I've cycled (and I've cycled in Pisa..).

oh and I took the train today as I had to have a tooth extraction on Saturday (didn't fancy exposing my gaping mouth to the Glasgow blusts). Wise move; conditions in Glasgow-about to get very very wet..

Warm, humid and foggy on the way in this morning. Going to be another 90's day today and I thought autumn was coming

I woke up in a bad mood this morning and the commute didn't really turn it around for me. Sometimes Mondays are like that, natch.

On my way to work I pass a house I considered purchasing about 4 years ago and ultimately decided against it. This morning to the right of it there were at least five cars parked in the front yard (which is only about 15 feet from the street to the door). And to the left of it a vehicle's window had been busted out & broken into.

Didn't make me feel better, because it #$%^&*ing sucks! But I sure am glad I opted against the decision. I figured anyone that's gonna chain their grill to the deck in their (locked) backyard is waving a pretty big and bright flag saying "STAY AWAY STAY AWAY."

The good
1. Perfect weather.
2. light traffic by the grade school.
3. 5 second wait at the stop sign.
4. No leaf blowers on Ponderosa Rd.
5. Late, but earlier than everyone else in the office.

The bad
1. 1 minute wait at the stop light.

So over all today was a good commute.

Nice ride today. Not as fast as I that thought it would be with the 22MPH tail wind, but still nice. Temperature was in the mid 50s. Overcast.

One of the things I really enjoy about bike commuting this time of year is the beautiful sunrises. Today was especially nice with brilliant colors in the clouds.

The first day after a week off work. An absolutely gorgeous morning for riding today: cool, clear, and a faint breeze from the southwest. And the bike cage was packed. Good to see that we're picking up some converts.

Foggy, dark morning. I have had all the lights on every day as the evenings are getting darker. A guy in a bike suit on a road bike that I just could not catch up with.

Can't wait for the ride home.

I am also a little tardy posting pictures. We'll get there soon. There has been a crack-down at work on blogging from the office, so I have to lead by example and only do it from home.

And home is where I am. One more shift to work before a crew a boat up to Block Island with a friends dad. I only wish I now have a folder to take with me on the boat.

30 mile morning commute went well. I rode hard and made good time. The return ride was another story. After my first flat I got stung by a yellow jacket on my neck. Then I get another flat. All the while the wind is hitting me dead on at 20mph. All-in-all I've had better days.

lovely. cool and grey this morning, just right for that great feeling of cold air/warm skin. using the new bag i bought, slowed me down a little but i think i'll keep it - i can reach my water without climbing out of the backpack.

coming home was sunny and bright, but already heading for dusk. i made a point of taking it easy both ways, not pushing anything, and it didn't make any difference to the time. just not as tired getting home. easier gears means i don't have to rest, i guess. think i'm getting stronger. bit of an ache in the hands, nothing more.

i LOVE that new path i've found! there's this patch of it which is dead level for about half a k, just a little tire-track across nothing but grass. trees on both sides, no traffic. it's just so cool after having to be careful-careful-careful all the way everywhere in all conditions, at all times of day. that and the bridge are my favourite parts.

the bike rack at work is just stuffed with bikes. someone even parked theirs back from the rack, with the cable around the frame and wheels. safe enough here, probably, but still it's too bad in a way. tomorrow i'll lock up against the outside edge of the rack and maybe that will leave a little more room.

It was cooooooooold this morning. My lungs were frozen when I got to work. It really felt great though!

On my way home I had a kind of funny thing happen to me.
THIS REALLY HAPPENED, I CAN'T MAKE THIS STUFF UP!

There is a part of the bike path that runs right along the freeway. A chain link fence divides me from the fast moving "cagers". They're going south I'm going north. At one point I go by one of those metered on ramps....It's on my right.
OK, so, I'm pedeling along when off to my left I see and old lady and her dog, off the path. (I pass them almost every day.) She always has the dog on a leash, but today...for some reason...she is not holding on to the leash. The dog comes racing at me, like he is in attack mode or something...I brake and slow way down, figuring that he can't chase me if I'm not moving...and he runs right past me and over to the fence. He starts barking at some guy who's stopped at the metered on ramp.
The old lady comes after the dog just as I am starting to get my speed back up to move on...she walks right in front of me. I had to slam on the brakes and totally stop to avoid hitting granny and knocking her on her can.
So...now I am stopped and the dog comes running at me again, but this time he is wagging his tail and friendly like. He jumps up on me with his front paws and I give him a little scratch behind the ear. Granny is very embarassed and apologizes like crazy as she finally gets a hold of the leash and pulls him off of me. I say, "no biggie." and go on my way.
I laughed the rest of the way home..."Finally," I think to myself, " a dog who is biker friendly!"

Okay! For those of you in East Ga: It's okay to throw things into the big black and yellow spider's web, but never, EVER, under any circumstances, should you throw something at a big white spider that looks just like a big yellow spider only white.

Had a lovely sprint yesterday morning, running late as usual...of course, today I am too, so we'll see how a week of moderate sleep deprivation affects my sprinting speed. The ride home was humid and uneventful, though at work I did meet another law enforcement officer and he actually said I should try for bike squad some time...

Big storms rolling through the area but I was dry. It's gray but warm. High 60s.

Interesting commute today. Nasty headwind started things of nicely. The weatherman online claims 9mph, but that's at the Central Park weather station; it's always stronger by ther river. Anyhow, I'm chugging along a high, exposed part of Riverside Drive a few blocks from Grant's Tomb, and I see a motorcycle -- a good one, racing-style (sorry, I'm a no0b) -- go straight into a parked car. I think the guy was trying it out for the first time or something, tried to rev while turning into the street I was on, panicked, sat up in the turn and boom! straight into a parked car.

I stopped to ask if he was alright. I think he was very embarrassed and told me was OK and that his friend was right there (where? dunno). I would like to have done something, especially for the unwitting owner of the now partially smashed parked car, but this guy looked like he didn't want anybody messing with him so I took off. He was still there, as far as I could tell at a distance, when I approached Grant's tomb. Hmmm.

A lot of polite, aware drivers this morning, though one stupid delivery van ruined that by zooming ahead to red lights, etc. <sigh>

Pretty normal ride in this morning. Warm and humid again, still waiting for fall to get here.

This report will begin not with my ride but when I got up in the middle of the night to use the restroom. As I was standing there using the toilet I heard a ploping noise, I couln't figure it out, and then I realised my water heater was leaking. I went running to fix it, or something, then noticed the plopping was coming from outside. It was raining! First time since June or thereabouts.

I left my house at a bit before 8:00 AM. The ground was damp but not enough for the tires to pick up water. I hit the stop light perfectly, but lots of traffic at the school, and a 1+ minute wait at a stop sign, but the commute still came in at 10 minutes or so.
