Minneapolis to St. Paul...

Little damp this morning. Just took my single speed for it's first ride since repainting and putting new BB, cranks, pedals, and brakes. Rode great, but the freewheel is making knocking noises I think.

It's a beautiful day in Minnesota, so I'm looking forward to the ride home.

back to the car doors, the delivery vans, the potholed streets of Commonwealth Ave and commuting in downtown Boston after a weekend where the road hazards were a little less familiar- but nice of them to put up some signs.

Great!

Added 16 miles to my 6-mile commute home, rode a few roads I haven't seen for a while. I'm definitely loving it!

Great!!

a box full of american candy arrived on my doorstep sometime this morning and my kid, in full not-a-morning-person mode, moved it inside (with one foot, probably) and went off to school without telling me. fell over it when i got into executive mode and was on my way to my bike.

so. late start this morning, because of course it had to be opened while on the phone to the sender and all. for some reason this made me a full 10% faster than my usual time when i did head out. it was a really, really nice ride - i'm not sure what's making so many of the rides so pleasant these days.

it's been pretty weird, neat weather all week. warm, really grey and really really humid. like living inside fog that just happens to be invisible. it's been winter, basically, but 15 or 20C warmer. going home was neat because to look at it from inside you sure thought you were going to get cold and rained on, and arrive home soaking wet. but it never rained on me at all. stopped at the grocery store for one of those we'll-eat-real-food-tonight things, and like usual bought too much to go in the bag.

i had it all outside on the sidewalk, and was methodically unpacking everything (map book, half-knitted sock, baseball schedule, balled-up morning-commute shirt wrapped around balled-up morning-commute socks, four defunct blinkies, loose batteries, loose 5's and 10's, hairbrush, pens) and then packing it back in again, trying to find places for the two super-giant-jumbo boxes of cereal and fit everything in around them, when i looked up and saw myself being Looked At by . . . one of the other baseball moms. i guess she'd brought her teenaged daughter along to help her load the 24s of pepsi and coke into the suv. she was giving me a Very Odd Look. i'm not sure she was too thrilled to have been caught seeing me, but i can't figure out if she was embarrassed herself or just thought i should be. sigh; i know plenty of those people who never think twice about living in cars, but when it gets right down to it i don't seem to understand them at all. she offered in this disoriented, feeble-guess sort of way to drive my corn pops home for me , but then when i said 'oh no thanks,' she didn't go away either. she seemed to have been caused puzzlement in some deep-seated, critical-hit sort of way that confused me too. i can't figure out what all that was about, but i guess i might find out at tomorrow's game.

kind of hope so; she confused me so much with her confusion i'm not going to sleep until the mystery's solved. i'd be curious as heck if i wasn't so uninterested.

game close to home tomorrow :D it's another bike day.

Good ride today, got to work and it started raining just after I got inside. I work nights so I'm hoping for a cool ride home in the morning, hopefully not too humid.

jeff-o 06-02-06 05:44 AM

My ride took a bit of a twist today - literally. Today at work they had most of the parking lot blocked off for a big BBQ in the afternoon. So naturally, I took this golden opportunity to do a few figure-8s in the parking lot! What fun! I think everyone here would be a little bit happier in the morning, if they could do figure 8s on a recumbent trike in the parking lot...

Nice commute this morning. Cool air, light tailwind, and sunny. A woman on a Commuter Tank appeared from a dirt path and turned in front of me into the MUP. (Not right in front of me.)

The bike had the biggest pannier I have ever seen. It was the size of one of those rolling carry on bags you see flight crews using sometimes. She was also wearing a backpack. The bike had fenders as well.

She was moving right along on it, too. I was happy to hang behind her for the whole ride. I noticed she had pretty good-sized leg muscles. :p

Just another day in helll

GTcommuter 06-02-06 07:10 AM

Very good ride this morning. I'm house-sitting this weekend so I get to try a few different routes to work. This morning I took a short cut through the cemetary, which was noticably cooler than the streets.

pinkrobe 06-02-06 08:49 AM

GWAR!!!!! I'm riding through the rich neighborhood with my wife this morning, and some cellphone-talking, beige-Mercedes-S-class-driving, too-good-to-ride-the-bus-for-15-minutes SKRAG cuts me off just as we're rolling up to an intersection. I gave a half-assed kick at her bumper as she went by, then looked in her passenger window and gave her a full on "WHAT THE F***!?!?!?" She sped off, but I caught her at the next light and gave her the finger. The ride was particularly fast after that... Serenity Now!

NM-NewRoadie 06-02-06 10:47 AM

nice ride in this morning, just cruised, really enjoying the cool, but not too cool weather we're having here on early Albuquerque mornings...

RonH 06-02-06 11:36 AM

The sun was trying to bust up the clouds when I left home but by the time I got to work it was completely overcast. And HUMID!!
Came across a few @$$holes on the way in. One guy passed me on a residential street when I was ~30 feet from an intersection. He zoomed past me and then slammed on the brakes for the stop sign. http://users.telenet.be/eforum/emoti...t/sterb026.gif
A few miles later I was waiting behind 6 cars at a stop light. I saw the guy ahead of me watching me in his rear view mirror. The light changed, the 5 cars in front of him started moving but he sat there watching me. I finally went around him and took off. He finally started moving when I was a few feet from the intersection. I went straight and he turned right -- thanks goodness. http://users.telenet.be/eforum/emoti...t/sterb116.gif

Did I mention it was very humid. :o

108F going home yesterday at 5pm. The (ever changing) chart above temp is moderated as the station is next to an artificial lake.

First commute in two weeks. I didn't realize how much I missed it. The commute was nice; I was running late so there wasn't much traffic. I'm moving this weekend, so I will need to learn a new route.

buzzman 06-02-06 02:41 PM

last couple of days left with little time to get to work so I had to take Comm
Ave., which now that most of the BU crowd is off for the summer is not so bad.

rando 06-02-06 06:40 PM

109 degrees when I left work. I went slow, but it took it's toll. this is going to take some getting used to.

Bike & Bus

Well, I commute part of the way, and then I mount my bicycle unto the route 77 to get to work. It's amazing. I get to work 25 minutes including wait time! Why do people drive again? Lol.

The commute from my apartment to the bus stop is wonderful. Lots of traffic, but it feels good zipping on by while everyone else is kind of stuck behind the wheel. I know. I know. It's vindictive, but I can't help it. Lol

shakeNbake 06-02-06 08:00 PM

Great day, it's about 95 in the San Fernando Valley.

Saw another "cyclist" for the first time today, nod his at me, I gave a two finger wave.

I'm not sure the stock rims are gonna hold out in the long run, my commute is pretty rough.

tokolosh 06-02-06 10:15 PM

overslept this morning. drove to work.

all this bike commuting is making me a crappy driver. i've been giving rides after ball-games to another kid whose mom doesn't drive, and i found myself receiving kindly instructions about car navigation from a fifteen year old.

Flak 06-03-06 02:06 PM

A little cold at 5am in a t-shirt and shorts. But i warmed as i got going.

COming home was nice and sunny, cars giving me lots of room, mild temp...just a great ride :)

jimcross 06-04-06 07:34 PM

I had to go into work this morning at 4:30 AM. I left the house at 3:30. Needless to say it was totaly dark, and virtually nobody on the roads. It was the greatest commute yet. I especially liked getting into downtown Austin at 4:20 AM and seing a half dozen or so people on thier way home from the bars looking at me like... is that a guy on a bicycle or did I drink too much again??? It made my whole day. I even took a 15 mile detour on the way home just for fun.

buzzman 06-04-06 07:36 PM

I've been leaving so late and flying into work on the roads instead of the bike path. So, less miles this week but much higher average speed. The bike path feels like a luxurious tour in comparison to Comm Ave.. But it's kind of fun to get to work in 20-25 minutes instead of 35-40.

RonH 06-05-06 04:58 AM

No riding today. :( I have to pick up 75 <edit> 50 </edit> t-shirts on my way in to work.

But tomorrow is another day and the bike and I will be "on the road again". http://users.pandora.be/eforum/emoti.../happy/059.gif

vtjim 06-05-06 06:10 AM

Low 50Fs. Kind of damp. Got drizzled on for a minute or two. Overcast. No wind. I came up behind 3 riders. Probably commuters. They were together. I said "hey there" or something as I passed. Lots of squirrels out this morning.

GTcommuter 06-05-06 06:19 AM

Almost chilly this morning. Not to the point of needing a wind-breaker, but unseasonable. Should heat back up by mid-morning, though.

jeff-o 06-05-06 06:57 AM

It was nice this morning. Cool enough that I didn't even sweat, but warm enough that I didn't freeze. I think the best thing (and perhaps the only good thing) about getting up at 6:30 for work is the sparse road traffic.

This afternoon should be a very enjoyable 25 C... *sigh* some days I wish I had job that let me work outside.

Mariner Fan 06-05-06 08:06 AM

Perfect morning here. Light traffic and just cool enough to keep me from sweating. 15 miles to work.

FormerBMX'er 06-05-06 08:38 AM

Mostly civilized commute this morning, nothing major to fret about . I made good time because I took my "A" Bike this morning. I wanted to test the 90mm stem I installed, so far so good.
