Morning commute was around 10F degrees. I went with a balaclava because I have a scratchy throat today and didn't want to be sucking in cold dry air.

We got zero snow from that storm that hammered our southern neighbors, so the trail is still nearly clear. I think I might ride the old Peugeot to work tomorrow. It's supposed to be in the mid 40s here later this week. This weather is good for me (I'm a student pilot) but bad for the ski resorts...

My commute to work today has been the only good think about my day so far. It's annoying when things in lab don't go as planned.

Oh, and Happy Birthday, Gus Riley!! :bday: I hope you'll get to celebrate with your family today! Thanks for starting this thread :D

Well….It’s Monday. The radar said it wasn’t raining but it obviously it didn’t see the mist that was still around. I can deal with wet streets, but water and glasses do not mix. Let see, what else. If it wasn’t for the fact I trust no one, I would have been run over by a drunk driver in a white Cherokee. He pulled out of a driveway really slow like, looked right at me and kept on pulling out. I punched his rear driver’s side quarter panel but he proceeded up Eastlake, with no lights and his left turn signal on. Then, somewhere along the line I got a puncture in my front tire. I noticed it as I was stopped at Denny, right by KEXP. (There is a benefit to wet tires) I rode that as far as 5th and Stewart where I decided to walk the remaining 4 blocks instead of changing the tube in the rain. Had to wait 10 mins for the freight elevator because I didn’t get to work before 7:00 and had to deal with all the construction workers that are working on various floors throughout the building. So, I’m cold, wet, mad, late, with a flat that I’ll have to change later and it’s Monday.

Passed ten other cyclists on the way home, a new record. Half were in the group mentioned in a BICYCLING editorial a few issues back. People who have no choice but to bike to get to work to survive. Then three boys BMXing on and off the sidewalk. one called over his shoulder thinking I was a buddy. He apologised when he saw his mistake. Two women without helmets. Um, well, all ten were without helmets including the boys.

took the mountain bike out sunday and got some good snow/tree/sky pictures (we got about 6" here in s nj). todays commutes were a challange, mainly AM in. drivers seemed to share and move with care.

spidercyclist 02-13-06 11:12 PM

Cold & windy.

Took the Metro yesterday in order to scope out the MV Trail for condition after the weekend snowfall. I decided to ride the bike this morning. The trail is generally in good shape and rideable, however, there are many snowy/icy patches, particularly the wooden bridges and shaded parts of the trail. I managed to get in without incident, simpy slowing down and picking my lanes between and over the washboard and crunchy patches; only had to unclip once. Hopefully these spots will have melted by this afternoon's trip.

bikebuddha 02-14-06 07:06 AM

Really cold, for Atlanta that is.

vtjim 02-14-06 07:16 AM

Low 20Fs and a nice 20MPH headwind. And I'm nursing some sort of a virus. It's mild but I just don't have much power to spare.

I did ride my Peugeot today though. Even with the headwind and lack of energy, I made it to work in the same time as I would normally make it on the winter-tire MTB with a tailwind. :)

yespatterns 02-14-06 07:19 AM

Awesome ride--- mid twenties with a 5 mph tailwind (!!!). Ran a 4 mile brick afterwards that felt unbelievably great, and treated myself to some chilled green grapes after my shower. Now for coffee....

Bekologist 02-14-06 07:35 AM

Cop cut me off by pulling into my lane, I pulled into the left lane, passed HIM, and took the lane back from him for the next half mile of traffic signals. Fokker!

LilSprocket 02-14-06 08:40 AM

BRRR!!! 32* with the wind chill this :am WHOA! Where am I?!
I salute those of you who ride in the snow!
:)

Hmmmm... bummer. My Monday went pretty good, I even addedsome extra miles, but man, I've had days like that and they just suck. I feel for you.

eastbaybob 02-14-06 10:59 AM

A nice morning, clear and sunny. Nice also that it was a little cooler than yesterday. It took around 10 minutes to get to the office.

luckysnafu 02-14-06 12:38 PM

Back on the bike this morning. Had a nice ride in, temps in the upper 20s. Finally got some toe covers for my shoes so my toes don't freeze :) Mid 50s here already so it should be a nice ride home, though i have a feeling I will be riding into the wind.

Mattyreg 02-14-06 12:44 PM

"Nuff respect" (as we say in the UK) to the cycling fraternity on the other side of the pond. You can count on one hand the times in a year that, in London at least, the mercury dips below 0°C / 32°F.

At the moment, we're having a balmy spell, relatively speaking - temperatures at about 10°C / 50°F. I suppose the quid pro quo is that we do get a lot of wind (especially when cycling nearby the Thames - I'm pedalling hard to stand still at times), and a fair bit of rain. But snow and ice, thankfully, are rarer than hen's teeth in these parts...

:)

No bike commute today since I'm hoping to get a bunch of errands done at lunch time. (Probably driving a total of 25 miles.) Oh well, gotta do what one's gotta do.

CommuterRun 02-14-06 04:25 PM

For the first time in, oh, I guess about 6, or so, weeks, I saw whitetails this morning. Saw 4, one alone, and three together.

Bumper hunting crossed my mind, but there were two major problems with that.
1) I was in the wife's car.
2) She was driving.

Had to take some stuff to work this morning that a bike, even with my flatbed trailer on, just wouldn't have cut the mustard. Gonna' have to drive again tomorrow, too, but Thursday I'll be back on the bike. Friday I haven't decided, if I go to work I'll ride, but leaning toward taking the day off.

tomg 02-14-06 08:24 PM

41degF, lite wind(brease), going in was great on road commuter (snow/ice almost cleared). PM home, i went to local flower shop, got a rose, and went for a 1 hour extended ride, including visit my wife's work (d/o rose as well)!
i did not see one (1) other bicyclist in my 1.25 hr commute/rides. the traffic on sherman ave was congested 1/2 mile each way at the blvd 4way stops. the people were stuck in the vehic of "choice". delsea dr was simular. i felt a little more free today, glad to be on my bike! here's to health and happy v-day!!

spidercyclist 02-14-06 11:01 PM

Great ride to work and home. It was warm today, It had to be 40f out . I hope the rest of the week is this warm .
Have a good nite .

yespatterns 02-15-06 07:03 AM

Last night's commute home was one of those trips--- the kind where everyone seemed to cut me off and almost run me the road. Ugh. This morning was alot better though, around 30f with a tailwind, and best of all, no jackass drivers.

(edited for grammar)

bikebuddha 02-15-06 07:03 AM

Had a guy pull into the gutter to prevent me from filtering up to a right hand turn. What a jerk.

That was this morning for me! some lady in traffic decides, "I'm gonna pull overrrrrr................HERE!" no turn signal, no nothing.

First commute of the week and the roads are all mostly clear but the ride really wasn't fun. As I've stated in other posts, I ride a full on rodie and I need to cross two bridges to get work. One of them was completely unplowed/shoveled in spots so I had to use the hand rail to keep from falling over.

I've come to realize that I need another bike :D, an intermediate bike, something to transition from light snow/slush to dry pavement. I actually have a Specialized Sirrus with Disc brakes that might do the job. I got it second hand so I need to take a look at it, but some nice cyclocross nobbies and flat pedals may work well. Wifey was on the "I spend too much money on bike stuff" rampage, hence the bike not being winterized .

vtjim 02-15-06 08:22 AM

Just about 32F/0C and another headwind blowing off the lake at 25MPH this morning.

I'm happy to be on the touring bike again. Fast & silent. Just the whisper of the tires on the pavement. Easy to sneak up on old ladies and pass them at 30MPH with inches to spare. (kidding!) :p

GTcommuter 02-15-06 08:27 AM

Beautiful. Great temperatures in the low 40's, enough clouds not to be bright, and very little traffic.
