Today I rode my bike to work faster than it used to take me to drive! I got my start by passing stopped traffic for the first mile. Don't know what caused it as I turned off before I got to the front. Really warm again today, even though the forcast was for it to cool off.

Terrific ride in. Mid 60's, so shorts and short sleeves. Stiff headwind that will be a nice push on the tush, going home. I always prefer my headwinds in the morning, dunno why. Repacking calmed a noisy front hub that's been nagging me, and I made awesome time - either I inadvertently left early this morning, or I rode fast, in spite of the head wind. Maybe it was from not having on a flappy windshell?

If I manage tomorrow, it'll be my first perfect week since early December.

The ride was both good and bad today. I caught a guy with gears and dropped him going down a hill. Then he caught up to me at the the next light... at the bottom of the hill. A dork in a truck [Toyota Tundra - burgundy] came in really close to me when he didn't need to. I caught and passed a truck that tried to shortcut along some side streets. Yes, I am that fast. My wife left for work today without me. :(

60% chance of rain today, but there was not a cloud in the sky this morning. It took about 10 minutes to get to the office this morning.

sloppy, and a snowflake flew right into my mouth and down my throat and I choked for a second because I was breathing in at the time!

I made it in just before the snow started coming down. Fortunately I rode my single speed MTB in today...at noon I'm hoping to squeeze in one last fun snow ride before spring hits. By the time I leave for home, it will have turned to yucky salty mush.

I had a platelet donation before work and forgot to lock up my bike. But I guess bike thieves don't think to troll the BloodSource parking lot at dawn for easy pickin's. Still there when I came out.

Hmmm... I've done that myself. It gives you a quick adrenaline rush when you come back and realize it. Nice ride in this morning, a dusting of snow, 28F/-2C, sunny and above freezing this afternoon, I think I'll take the long way home. Come on spring!

McGillicutty 03-02-06 03:21 PM

Left a little earlier than usual today to get to work, so I took some side streets to make a little longer ride (+5mi compared to 3-4). I've noticed I'll frequently extend my rides on my bike but don't think I've ever extended a drive in my car just to "get in a few more miles" on the way to work. :)

LOL! A buzzy bug flew in my ear on the ride home yesterday as I turned to admire a great blue heron in flight... buzzz buzzzz buzzzz, I had to shake my head and flog my ear to make sure it was gone... I laughed at myself... and sang most of the way home. It's been a lovely week commuting. :)

Icy snow, kinda like hard little ice flakes on the way home. The streets were wet w/ some slush along the sides where traffic is lighter. Instead of snow flakes flying down my throat, I had ice crystals flying into my eyeballs which hurt. On the good side, my fenders worked mostly good at keeping the crap off me and the kool-stop salmons worked as advertised in the slop. It was still a good ride.

great rides today! on return home, had to pull under old theatre ticket-booth to put on gore-tex pant cover but should have put on booties (shoes got too wet) as well. riding in the rain, with the right gear, is great, as is riding when it is cold, warm. i'm not big coursing through heavy wind though. traffic seemed more sane today,
more "predictable"!

James55Thompson 03-02-06 08:25 PM

The ride today was great!! Temps in the 70s, high 70s, some wind but the ride was beautiful.

buzzman 03-02-06 09:55 PM

great ride in this morning. less wind than earlier in the week and another 5 degrees warmer- up to 30F+ on the way home. the bike path is quiet these days- that will change soon. This morning there was a guy walking down the path with a half gallon of milk and smoking a big fat joint- a rare sight. About 5 miles later some kid riding a bike hands free rolling towards me and he, too, was smoking a joint. Each person I saw on the path this morning said, "Good morning!" as I went by them. Saw some rabbits at the section I call "Watership Down". Interesting day.

Fast ride this morning, I broke out the Lemond . My Cannondale beater/commuter has a mechanically challenge RD. Damn thing was skipping gears up hill during my commute home last night. This allowed someone to pass me...noone ever passes me  :D. This weekend I'll take the beater out back and beat it....ahem clean and tune it.

It's suppose to be windy for the ride home so this was the major reason I un-cuffed the Lemond from the trainer. Skipping gears is one thing, but into the wind, up hill is another .

A New World Record! (for me, anyway). 51:23, 14.95 miles. 32F, decent tailwind. Along the way I caught drafts from two trucks and an unusual number of green lights. It was a great commute.

luckysnafu 03-03-06 08:26 AM

Well after dealing with 20+ mph headwinds on the ride home last night the winds decided to shift overnight so I am riding into them again this morning. Luckily they weren't as strong but it could have been better. I am sure they will shift today and I will have at least a nice crosswind for the ride home. Not nearly as warm today, low 40s this morning and only getting into the mid 50s. It is sunny though and it's Friday so I am going to add a few miles on to my ride home this afternoon :)

joshdcu 03-03-06 08:49 AM

Great commute this morning, mid to upper 30s and sunny. I put new wheels on my bike (Suzue ProMax hubs, Mavic Open Pro rims), and they are so ridiculously smooth that pedaling was almost effortless. A nice tailwind most of the way didn't hurt, either.

WhiteRabbit 03-03-06 09:16 AM

Brilliantly bright blue sky, but two annoying drivers to deal with. The first tried to pull up next to me at a stop light, in his huge F250 with dualies. Ended up halfway in the other lane (4 lane road) and then almost ran into me as he pulled away at the green light. The other was a cement mixer that did the stalking thing for most of a mile until my turn off. Why he wouldn't change lanes is beyond me.

Wednesday and Thursday were nice (a bit of snow falling at lunch yesterday), and not far below freezing.

This morning was colder again, at -12C/10F, but the sun is shining today, which made for a nice ride.

Witnessed an intersection accident. 5.1MB video, right click, save target as..., then play from local drive.
If you click on the link it won't play. Only works on Windows, or if you have Indeo 5.1 codec.

Sunny and crisp about 24F. Only problem was the Manhattan Bridge, which was covered in ice from the midpoint into Manhattan. Was warned by another commuter coming from the opposite way. Should have put on the knobbies this morning. Took it real slow. Otherwise the streets were dry.

pinkrobe 03-03-06 10:04 AM

The soft fluffy snow just keeps falling! The roads are surprisingly good, but I'll be happy to get a break from what isn't exactly fun riding and hit the slopes this weekend.

:::: bows towards the good folks from Showers Pass ::::

Warm and thunderstorms this morning but no complaints here. I even took the long way in to get some extra miles. I did almost get taken out by a duck that was frightened or disoriented by a really loud thunder clap as he was coming in for a landing on the park lake that I skirt. I saw him coming and had just enough time to...well...duck. He tried to veer around me as he passed a couple of inches above my helment. He was quacking all the way through his resulting clumsy landing. I think that I have officially now been cussed out in duck.
