I came in late today, after taking a long detour for mental hygeine. The sky the color of platinum, the river the color of chocolate.
I rode the fixie again. I'm beginning to wonder why I ever needed gears. With apologies to George Gershwin: Fixie time, and the spinnin' is easy. Chain's not jumpin' and the rider is high |

Home in one piece, Mother Nature did her best to hold me back (22mph wind gusts) but the lighter bike, compact crackset and bladed spokes helped power right through her. Leaving my beater at home today was the best thing I could have done.

No commute today :( I had a flat and I aready used my spare this week. Well, tommorw I am getting some tire liners, because any little piece of glass will puncture the tube. All my flats are from glass I can tell. And I am getting some 1' rise bars for my MTB, so it's flat bar will go onto my Suteki, making it a Hybrid! A hybrid will be much better for my commute because I have to carry a heavy schoolbag and P.E. bag on my side.

great both ways! wind kicked on return, but no real issue, 4/4-100% '06.
took consumer-client-patient-customer-individuals with persistant mental illness to the gym today, got more of a "work-out" on the 'ecliptical' machine there than commute. went to the gym once (1x) this week, commuted every work day (took tues off) = more long term consistant benefits (hopefully). i had much more fun commuting! enjoy the week-end, amp your miles (if you want to or can) ! |
Yes, Yes! on the use of tire liners. An old tube with the air valve cut off will do fine until you get some. Mr. Tuffy are great, reasonably priced and available at any LBS. They're in my commuter mtb and I haven't had a puncture in over 2 years(replaced tires once). I have a 10.5 mile route through a variety of traffic situations. Routine mileage is between 60-120 mpwk depending on work schedule.
Late 80's Fuji hardtail w/Niterider 2.0 trailrat and universal taillight, Jandd saddlebags, single Shimano 46t chainwheel and cranks(modified touring triple) w/28x11 cassette on Weinman 519's, Wellgo clipless, Wal-mart(Yes, wal-mart!) 1.95 knobbies...nothing fancy, but it gets the job done. Stock shifter/brake levers(Alivio) w/STX rear der. Oh yeah, my commute...it was great today. Low 30's am and low 50's pm. Cloudy, low wind. Had to hollar at a busdriver this morning who cut me off and my chain fell off this afternoon, but otherwise great. Mashed most of the way home. Since getting the liners I never think about getting flats, anymore. |
No commute today but a great ride this morning, ran to the gym to do some weights, then to the bagel shop for a snack, and finally to the library to return some books. It was cool but not cold and I took my time and enjoyed the weather.

A little windy this morning, but still nice and only one near death experience.
|
Y'know that feeling like you don't want to do anything but crawl back into bed and stay there a few more hours? That's the feeling I had all morning. Ride was fine, but I still kept thinking about sleep. Off to get some coffee.
|
Lazy ride today, legs felt flat! I cleaned and tuned my commuter, so it felt good. I even trued the rear wheel but I think I may have closed the rear caliper too much, felt like it was dragging. I'll have check things out for the ride home.
|
Rode in with my wife today. It's always fun to kiss goodbye in the middle of the road. :)
|
Nice and brisk this morning in shorts and short sleeved shirt. I had a pretty major tune up to my bike over the weekend (new chain, cassette, brake pads, headset adjusted, wheels trued, shifters adjusted), and it made such a difference!

Rode in the dirt yesterday, so my legs are feeling worked.
This morning was just beautiful... a foggy mist covered several sections of the river trail... I thought I was starting to get an ugly squawking noise from my just-repacked front hub, when I realized that it was ducks talking, and my hub was humming along all glassy and smooth. Low battery light started to flash on the headlight, about halfway in, but it's light enough now in the mornings that I could turn it off for the rest of the river section, and save it for the city streets I have to hit to get to the triain station. I should be able to get home ahead of sunset no problem, but I've got a backup cateye in the trunk, anyway. I think everyone was feeling it this morning, other bikers finger-waved, peds fairly leapt from my intended path. This is Day Two of my no-chamois experiment. Just wore Levi's baggy shorts and Merona seamless skivvies. No discomfort, thus far. |
Had a hard time getting motivated to ride this morning. So, I lounged around the house for an extra hour or so puttering around getting my stuff together. Over the weekend I wanted to get a big ride in, so I pulled off the studs and even cleaned and oiled the chain. The bike rides soooo smooth now, and fast.
After riding 40 hilly miles yesterday, I aparrently did not properly refill the tank last night. Half way to work this am I noticed that I was really hungry....2 minutes later I was getting weak. Bonk! Guess I should toss in a snack bar or 2 for next time I do that. Trying to lose weight and significant cycling miles is a delicate balance of calories in vs calories burned. Only 1 idiot tried to kill me on the way in... was crossing over a freeway exit ramp, [I had the green] and this fool was looking back behind me and started to pull forward. At the last second he returned his gaze forward and got that "oh crap, I almost killed a cyclist" face. I was already evasive and would have cleared but the look on his face was priceless :) |
Got a late start today. I filled the tires last night and had put on the fenders while they were low, so 1/2 block down the road this morning, I noticed that the tire was rubbing the fender on a slightly rased section of my wheel. I did a roadside repair and was back on my way. Tailwind the whole way (8.5 miles) which felt great although I really did not have the gearing for it. I have been riding 60 gear-inches all winter and am ready to step up to at least 63 or maybe even 67. I am a spinner anyway but this morning was spinning around 110 most of the way. Time for a gearing change. Felt the first rain drop 1/2 mile from work. Just missed it:).

Freezing mist and rain and snow and ice pellets. Low visibility. 12.5mph average speed. Didn't fall though! w00t!
|
Cold, wet, and rainy. I got some nice tire spray up my backside (I didn't ride the bike with fenders today; it needs some wheel work).
And all this, just as the weather was really starting to warm up. |
Commute this AM was great, great to be back into the routine of cycle commuting after being off the bike for ~6wks due to injury. The first week back I felt a bit off, both physically (endurance) and mentally (not feeling 'one' with the bike). Now I think I'm back in the groove.

A fresh coating of snow for my bike commute in this morning but it was just below freezing. Nice ride! Fresh and clean! It looks like we are in for a gloomy cloudy day. It goes with the time of year.

Rain. Often this means my wife gives me a hard time about riding, but since her car wouldn't start, no hassles (must remember to re-attach her battery cables before she gets home).
Soaking wet on the ride but happy. Then I hear this weird noise from the rear tire. It's the sound of the frikking nail I just rode over (never saw it, of course) hitting the ground on each rotation of the wheel. Damn. First the humiliation of walking the bike along a busy road to a shelter. Then trying to change out the tube with shaking hands because I'm so cold. Water running down into my shoes. But--and I know I don't need to tell any of you this--it's still better than driving. :D |

Cloudy this morning and a bit cool. It took about ten minutes to get to the office.
I was sick last Friday, but for last week I had 3 commutes out of 4. The one I missed was due to needing to use my car for work, and the work car was being repaired. For the year I am -1 for bike commutes, which is easier than figuring out the running total. Now it is 1:35 PM, 2 hours and 25 minutes till closing and it is pouring here in sunny southern California. |
No commute since last Friday. My sister in-law, boy friend, and 2 kids are living with us. They have been sick for about a month partly due to fast food 100% of the time, no exercise, and cigarette smoke.
Now it jumped to me. With the exception of a stomach flu incident last month, this is the first time I have been sick since september with a possible cold. However, a 101 degree temp on Saturday is not indicative of a cold. If it persists tomorrow I am visiting my dr. Stupid dry and incessant cough Yet another reason why a married couple and child should NEVER EVER let someone else move in with them. That and the mice they brought into my garage. :( Sorry, this has nothing to do with cycling. Just wanted to vent. It's almost time to think about asking them to leave. |
