You said it my man! The wind has been killer this past week as I had a major ear ache riding home lastnight. Once I got home, I had to ride to Hollywood Video to return DVD's that my wife rented .

Awkward ride this morning, lots of Buses to pass and dodge. They were stacked at the stops so I had to take them two at a time. Out of the saddle to get around the Buses, only to find someone up ahead making a right turn in my path. That's today's commute in a nutshell.

Another unusually warm morning ride, it was 48F on the way up the hill. Weather is supposed to return to winter sometime tonight...bummer on that.
Might get some rain this afternoon for the ride home. Although I told myself several times to toss in the rain jacket, it think it's still in the bike bag in my closet. It will be a soggy ride home in a sweatshrit if it rains. Oh well, still more fun than driving :)

Really like the new PlanetBike 10W light. The beam is a bit broader than the old NiteRider Road Rat. I think that makes it easier for cars to see you from side streets. Plus it's funky stylish... style is everything.

0/1 for March 29/34 for the year. I had to drive today and it felt strange. Back on the bike for tomorrow!

I went to work early today, 3:45AM. It was pretty dark. It took about ten minutes to get to the office. On the way there a police car shined a light on me.

Welcome to the Happy Healthy Commuthing Mutha F*ckers Club (HHCMF)! You'll be happy to know that you are now helping to save the environment which allows you to make any SUV driver your coffee toadie. Please enjoy the benefits of membership.

My commute consisted of me wondering why my legs felt tired and sore. Then I blasted to work a minute under my usual time. And my legs still felt tired and sore. I think I need coffee.

First day on my bike this week. Wow has it gotten warm since Friday! Time to put on shorts and something short sleeved.

pinkrobe 03-01-06 10:00 AM

Studded tires are my friend, and the colder temperatures are doing a good job of consolidating the snow. I had to really put the hammer down this morning - traffic was moving quickly and it was a mad sprint for the last 1/2 of my ride. I felt stronger than I have in a while. It was good...

Congrats!

An uneventful commute in this morning. Took it easy since I actually got up this morning for my pre-breakfast ride. But not too easy... still not using granny gears on my climb in. I can now make it up with a reasonable cadence sitting. :)

Had to drive in today for a job offsite this morning. Which is very unfortunate since it is already about 75 outside and sunny here. I am riding in for sure tomorrow with temps going up above 80 near the record. I will be breaking out the sleeveless shirt for the ride home tomorrow :D

Ha, unfortunate indeed! The weather is great in RDU today.
I was sleeveless this afternoon.
Tomorrow... shorts!

I prepared for the right hook that never came.

I heard the unmistakeable sound of oversized tires and a big engine gunning and a white Ford Expedition slid into my peripheral vision like an Imperial Star Destroyer. It moved ahead, its right turn signal blinking a warning. I had nowhere to go so I held my line and speed and prayed that she would remember I was there and not crush me against the curb with a flick of her wrist.

She slowed, I flowed past her, and as she turned into the parking lot, I held up my hand in a friendly "thank you for not killing me" wave.

Sounds like we has similar rides this morning

buzzman 03-01-06 08:15 PM

much less wind today and a bit warmer- about 20F on the way in this morning and about 25F on the way home. So, it feels like Miami beach out there compared to the last few days. Been trying to push the cadence to get a little faster on these rides but I must say I feel like I'm slow pokey. I dare not say how slow my average time was this week. I really do think the cold weather makes the muscles less responsive. The ice on the river is beautiful, especially on the western side of the Mass Ave bridge where the wind layered it into fantastic crystalline chunks. This morning saw two cyclists on the way in and two on the way home.

tomg 03-01-06 09:07 PM

usual rides, to/from, i felt physical and alive! 3 cager phoopahhs(sp), no real biggies, but hindsite entices forgiiveness. spin safe, hold your lane, and be legal!!

scottmorrison99 03-01-06 10:58 PM

Ride in was early, 5AM, for a meeting. It was 37F and there was still a lot of traffic on my regular route that early. Ride home was 43F with a 12MPH tailwind. I was kicking butt coming home. It was fun passing cars on the left and getting that incredulous "You're passing me on a bicycle?" look. Strange that they were not speeding, but good none the less. 13hour workday doesn't feel so bad if I get to ride both ways.

jschen 03-02-06 01:08 AM

A typical quiet ride home. My legs are a bit sore since today's the first time in two weeks I took a ride for more than 3 miles (did so before breakfast). But no biggie...

Fast ride today, ran into another commuter riding the same route. He said he was running late, so that would explain why I never see him.

I must be leaving slightly earlier than usual because again I had to get around two buses stacked at the stop. Somewhat frustrating because one will get by me just as it begins to pull over for the next stop. This forces me into the middle of the road again to avoid the stream of people getting on.

ctoddrun 03-02-06 08:02 AM

Been a while since I've had time to sit and check out the forums... so here's the recap of my commutes since last Thursday.
...

There, wasn't that great? Actually, first ride in in a week this morning due to a variety of reasons (excuses?) ranging from lack of sleep (sick kid) to work-from-home so my wife could do a lunch deal. The ride was good, if felt great to be on the bike, and the weather was great. Shorts, short sleeves - felt kinda naked without the knee/leg warmers and long sleeves / layers. Just enough of a headwind for about half the ride to make me conscious that I was working harder than normal. Can't wait for the ride home!

jyossarian 03-02-06 08:20 AM

It's snowing! Yippeee!!!

edit: I forgot to add in all the peds I almost hit today running across the street like deer, not looking for traffic, crossing against the light and acting startled and screaming, "Oh *****!", when they see me barreling at them. One in particular made me angry cuz she was running across the street pushing a stroller with a baby inside. :( That is not cool at all.

Not only are you allowed, you're encouraged!

"Back in the saddle again"

First ride of the year, finally. Still have the studded tires on, but no snow or ice on route. They gotta go. Wireless sending unit dead. Seems to happen every year. The little wires attaching the reed switch break. Oh well. Nice ride, little traffic, temps around freezing, and no wind! :D

luckysnafu 03-02-06 08:56 AM

Great ride in today. First commute this month since I had to drive for work offsite yesterday. Temps almost at 60 so I rode in shorts and saw a couple other roadies out in shorts as well. Temps approaching 80 this afternoon but I will have to deal with a headwind on the way home. Nothing to complain about though with these temps. (Except my allergies came roaring back yesterday and I didn't sleep well  )

fordfasterr 03-02-06 09:00 AM

easy ride today. no close calls.

made it in one piece !!!!!!!

squeakywheel 03-02-06 09:05 AM

It was a little slippery. The road was covered with slush from last night's snowfall. Had one little rear tire skid, but didn't go down.
