Going through an underpass, found a guy on has back in the dead center of the trail. It is kind of a transient person campsite anyway but usually campers stay to the side. While I was planning ahead to park the bike and get my cell phone out if he turned out to be dead or something, he apparently heard me and got up. I think he was planning some spectacular ceiling graffiti. I'll find out Monday, maybe, on my way back in.

Despite the fact that it was raining when I looked out the window this morning, I rode in to work without a hitch. Only bad thing was when the huge trucks threw nasty water all over me when they passed too close. On the way home, I almost rear ended a Honda Accord when starting from a stop making a left hand turn. I was head down and hammering trying to gain as much momentum to make it through the turn and up the impending hill. She stopped to let some oncoming traffic through and I just reacted in time to hit the brakes and skid to a stop. Stupid move on my part, could have been worse. Guess I need to pay closer attention...Did make it home before the rain hit again. :)

Driving is a waste of a good bike? Has anyone thought of making bumper-sticker equivalents for those of us commuters that ride to work in some kind of regular riding gear? I'd love to have a phrase like that or something else on the back of my jersey.

A few years ago Bikecentennial (now Adventure Cyclist) had "The future belongs to the energy efficient" and "Just passing gas, it's only natural" t-shirts. I don't think they sell them anymore.

rides a bike AND gardens?! Daaannng... You GO! Gurlfriend! :D
Love the new avatar btw

It always cracks me up when I'm riding, and some guy in a car burns rubber next to me at a light: I always say to myself, "Wow, how strong your foot must be to step on the throttle like that, what he-man!"
:roflmao: +1!

Getting my stuff off my back is such a relief.

Congrats! I love my panniers, though I think I load it more than I should...
All that freedom’s gone to my head... lol

Excellent!! Have an awesome weekend!

Summer is full on here in S.FL... muggy, sticky, midday rain storm followed by blazing sun and sauna action...
Gotta love the fenders :D

ckellingc 07-14-06 08:05 PM

105 degrees
65% humidity

I wussed out today and hitched a ride from a friend

LilSprocket 07-16-06 02:43 PM

I rode 5 miles on my usual work day commute to ride another 62 in a local charity event.

Whew! some of those folks were really flyin'
http://www.one2ride.org/Animation/Roadrunner.gif

Cheers to all who came out for the ride http://www.one2ride.org/Animation/Cheers.gif

YAAY, no mechanicals. It was burning hot out there...
crawlin' at, like, 15 or so, a bit of a wind slowed us down on the return
I'm icing my knee :o

Won't commute until I see the doc with my MRI pics  hopefully this week.

mjw16 07-17-06 06:59 AM

75 degrees and humid this morning. I took the long way to check out my mileage on my new cylce computer. It's an additional 2 miles over my "regular" route-not the 3 that I guesstimated. That makes either a 7 or 9 mile ride one way. Not looking forward to this afternoon's ride home. The temp will be about 100 with humiture values around 105. I've already sucked down 32 oz of vitamin water and am about to refill with half gatorade/half water mix. I'll ride slow and take it easy, then; a cold shower and couch/ac likely until bedtime (unless I decide to hit the gym which I seriously doubt).

luckysnafu 07-17-06 07:12 AM

It was actually a pretty nice morning here in Raleigh compared to the past two weeks. Humidity was a little lower but it actually felt cool. Of course it is already in the 80s at 9am and will approach 100 this afternoon. Saw a couple of other cyclists this morning on my way in.

Mariner Fan 07-17-06 07:38 AM

It was in the 70's here in Indiana this morning. Very nice ride to work. It's supposed to be in the 90's and humid so my way home will be hot!

jyossarian 07-17-06 07:57 AM

Hot! Ride in was fine, quick even, but the heat caught up w/ me when I got to work as I started pouring sweat about a minute after I got off my bike. Took longer to cool off then it did to get to the office! It's at times like these that I wish we had showers at the office.

pinkrobe 07-17-06 08:10 AM

Yowza! I had a very fast ride in this morning. The temperature was perfect, traffic was very manageable. Now I have a morning of meetings... Sigh...

FormerBMX'er 07-17-06 08:31 AM

I tried to ride slow today, but had to hustle over the B.U. Bridge. Yesterday I did the CRW Climb to the Clouds century in 85~90 temps with 4000ft of climbing. Needles to say the drumsticks are a bit cooked.

GTcommuter 07-17-06 08:39 AM

Second commute with the new saddlebag. Had a bit of rain on it yesterday and I'm still very happy with it. No actual commuting incidents to report.

RonH 07-17-06 08:47 AM

Another WARM ride this morning. Light traffic for some reason. :) Only saw one other bike commuter. :(
The ride home is supposed to be in the "sweltering" range. Glad I remembered my bandana.
I'll be stopping by the bank to deposit my paycheck this afternoon. I hope no one there minds me "dripping" on the counter. :o

e_a_olson 07-17-06 08:50 AM

Entered my third week of cyclocommuting. I took the weekend off; no cycling at all. I did 5 laps at the pool. My legs thanked me for it this morning!

billh 07-17-06 09:02 AM

You know, it's the hottest day of the year, and I choose TODAY to forget my work dress shirt, doh. Thank God for campus book stores! Woo Hoo, showing my school spirit today!

MyPC8MyBrain 07-17-06 09:03 AM

Legs of lead this morning.
Had to sit on the couch nursing a cup o coffee for quite a while to talk myself into coming to work today.
I think riding the bike turned out to be my inspiration in the end.
Boy is the office lucky I cyclomute or I'd be flopped on the couch watching TV all day :)
Rode downhill all day yesterday. Ride the ski lift up then bomb down the trails. That sport flat beats the tar out of ya. I'm going to have to build up a nice cushy bike for bombing the down hills. This old bod is not able to take the abuse like it used to. {Maybe an excuse to build another bike :) }

The ride was nice... slow but nice.

caloso 07-17-06 10:08 AM

Did not ride in today. My wife is temporarily assigned to my same building and with getting the kids to daycare and whatnot, it made more sense for all of us to come downtown in the minivan. Just as well, I guess. My legs are pretty dead from some hard riding over the weekend.

vtjim 07-17-06 10:34 AM

High 70Fs this morning, but not horribly humid. I also had a mild headwind to help with the cooling. This afternoon is going to be, well, uncomfortable. It's already 87 (lunch time) and the dewpoint is up around 70. The sun is blazing.

We commuters are a whiney lot. "It's cold! It's snowing! It's raining! It's hot! Waaah!" :D

jimmuter 07-17-06 11:42 AM

I went in an hour earlier than usual this morning. It was nice because it was nowhere near hot at the time. It is quite hot now, but I don't really mind that either. I nearly ran over my wife this morning on the MUP. She and her friend were walking and she wouldn't move! I wimped out at lunch time but promised myself to make up for it after work.

juliebeanpie 07-17-06 12:18 PM

Great ride in, not too hot yet. But it's 95 out there now, and supposed to be 108°. Whew! Good thing I sweat mostly on the way home. I shouldn't complain, the majority of my ride home is shaded by trees in the park.....

It's the human condition; I bet the car commuters are whining about the traffic, the high cost of gasoline, and burning their back sides when they sit down on their car seats. At least we're healthy whiners! :D

Roody 07-17-06 01:01 PM

At least we've earned our whines. If I hear one more co-worker complain about how hot they got, walking 30 feet from their car to the workplace, I might commit random acts of mayhem!

No whinning from me. I knew it was going to be hot today before I started. If I didn't like to bike I wouldn't do it. Of course some conditions I like better.;)

It was 80° when I came to work at 5:30 am. It was 98° at 3 pm, with the heat index at 110°. It will be hotter when I go home in 75 minutes.

Shade? Whatz dat? Lots of water makes it all possible.

So true. As I was finishing up a 20 mile ride yesterday, I saw a lady park in a handicap spot, walk a few yards and complain how much her feet hurt because they were swollen from the heat. Pathetic.

vrkelley 07-17-06 03:29 PM

Excellent ride in...great weather...finally

The ride home wasn't bad. Hot but low humidity I guess, 'cause I didn't drip too much on the counter at the bank. http://users.pandora.be/eforum/emoti.../happy/050.gif

Dickseacup 07-17-06 07:21 PM

Ride in this morning was 74 degrees; normally it's low- to mid-50s. Humidity was above 90%, too. I was drenched when I got to work. :(

Ride home was 94 degrees and as close to 100% humidity you can get without actually having precipitation. I figured I was heading home so doing the stoplight sprint thing would be OK. Sucking in hot air is not fun in my book. Well, ok, a little.

Tonight we have massive thunderstorms and winds up to 75mph pushing through. Hopefully, it'll be dry by tomorrow morning again. Oh, and the tires, fenders and rack/trunk shipped today. So, hopefully, no more sweaty back when I get to work after that.

jyossarian 07-17-06 07:48 PM

Ride home was hot. I wouldn't have minded if it was just heat from the sun, but added to the mix was heat radiating off the blacktop and heat radiating off cars and from the bus exhausts that are right at body level. And as soon as I got off my bike, the sweat caught up and I was dripping. And it's only Monday.

scottmorrison99 07-17-06 10:54 PM

HOT!

GTcommuter 07-18-06 06:55 AM

Hot. In fact, I think this is supposed to be the hottest day of the year so far. Got to vote, went to the wrong polling place by accident and had to backtrack which didn't help. But I did vote and I rode my bike, I'm very patriotic today.
