happy holiday all! to those who work today, happy commute! it's 10 am and the bear has risen finally! feels good to be up late. anxious to ride in the mid-day shine. it's beautiful out in San Diego(down at the parent's for the holiday). have a nice ride all, whether commuting or not!

felt good to be back on the bike again, it has been a few days. 14 degrees F, slight tail wind, pedaling in 24 gear most of the way, felt great.

the ride in this morning was alright... I just cleaned and lubed the chain/gears about half an hour before setting out so the ride was really smooth. I was going uphill toward a light and saw a kid on one of those little scooters riding down the street the wrong way. he shouted "yo, slow down" I was like "yo you're on the wrong side of the street" and he was like "yo slow down let me ask you a question" I was like nah and kept going and he shouted "******** cracker" as I kept going up the hill. had somebody tailgating me pretty close at one point. other than that it was your usual ride in.

the ride back was a night ride, since I had my night class today. second night ride with the helmet-mounted HID... good thing I remembered to charge it this afternoon. made pretty good time going back, took less rest stops and pushed myself harder than I usually did, especially on the big hill on my commute. light traffic, no problems, good ride back.

Like ctoddrun, it was cold in Memphis. 23F at 6a on my way to work with snow/ice still on the road from the weekend storm and 34F going home a 5:30p. Folks think I have lost my mind but after being snowed in for two days and stuck on a wind trainer I had to get some real road time. Another 20 car miles saved!

It was 13F on Saturday evening! That's darn cold for Memphis!!

It was 30F going into work this morning. I met up with another rider at the light waiting to cross the highway. Roadie in Pearl Izumi. First rider I've seen commuting with decent lights since I started riding to work. I said good morning, but I got snubbed. Oh well, it's good to see someone else riding. One of my coworkers asked why I didn't keep up with the roadie. Had to explain the difference between my MTB and the other guy's dropbar racer. I coulda caught him if I went all out, but he looked like if he turned it up he could drop me on my commuter like a bad habit if I had challenged. I need to get my roadbike ready to commute, it would be nice to trade off occasionally. Plus, sometimes I wanna be the Ferrari and not the SUV of bikes.

fast&cold .

A comfortable 43F when I left the office yesterday. Record time on the ride home last night (again - second time in a row...) this time with the backpack and no tailwind. I guess the whole rest/recovery thing really does make a difference! I got what I thought was going to be a nasty calf cramp at about mile 13, and wasn't looking forward to walking the last 2 miles. But I managed to stretch it out a bit, and then it just disappeared about a mile later... Guess I should adjust my balance of coffee and water intake on days that I ride...

cold this morning arounf freezing, slight headwind from the north....brrrr. Just missed a big hail fall before leaving at 06.45. but got caught in another heavy hail shower before reaching work at around 07.30ish ....ouch that hail; stings the face a bit. Other than that a decent run in, and looking forward as ever to the return leg, hopefully tail wind assisted...yipee.

Mid teens (F) and an annoying headwind. I saw a group of ducks swimming around the lake in open water, surrounded by ice. I guess they're finding food. Must be warm enough that they don't feel like flying south this year.

There's enough daylight now that I don't need lights any more. Seems like we never got a real winter this year.

First ride in four days, I'm such a bumb. I meant to get on the trainer over the weekend, but I had family over and I found new love in one of my old Online PC Shooters . The ride was fairly calm and it took mile to or so to get my "riding eyes" in to focus, the open car with guy just standing there helped .

Today's Epiphany: It's amazing how 26°F mid-winter doesn't feel nearly as cold as 26° early-winter.

A bit foggy, but comfortable ride in this morning. Got a great workout chasing down and overtaking a fellow commuter and BF member. I won't mention names to keep from embarrassing . I hope the rain holds off for the rest of the week.

Easy ride today. =)

I tried to keep a 100rpm cadence for most of the trip, but I could only manage to keep it up there for 80% ... mostly due to slowing down @ red lights and maneuvering around cars making turns and slowing down in front of me .. lol

I'm getting there !

Near disaster today as I rode up to work and began to dismount. I'd come to a complete stop and went to put my foot down when I realized I was clipped in! Panic ensued while visions raced of my falling down in front of a bunch of people. Then one foot unclipped except now I was leaning the wrong way to put it down. Some desperate tugging of the other foot and I was free before the fall started. All this happened in about a second, but seemed much longer. I laughed it off, locked up and went inside for some much needed coffee.

A guy with donuts riding his bike the wrong way in the bike lane made me havta swerve but other than that

Wonderfully comfortable in shorts and a tanktop about 76*, no wind, clear sky… a really nice ride…

Spring is in the air

16F this am, clear as a bell and calm....it made for a great ride in. Installed a new light last night [Planet Bike 10w], but it was too light this morning to really make a good comparison.

Kudos to Performance Bike... My NiteRider 10w died the other night on the way home. Was the battery or wiring or something. When I took it back, they gave me FULL CREDIT toward a new light. The old one was 5-6 months old. They had the planet bike 10w with smart charger on sale.. I walked it out the door for $35 out of pocket. Any time I've had an issue with anything, they give similar service. Again, Great service from Performance Bike.

Nice commute in this morning, 4F/-15C, clear skies. Day break is starting about halfway through my morning commute now and that's nice, and much later in the afternoon too (no need for lights on the way home). Still, I'm ready for spring.

Squeaky.

It rained on Friday, my chain was already dry, and I totally forgot about it over the holiday weekend. Result was an embarrassingly loud squeak on the way to work today.

Planet Bike claims their Freddy Fenders are made of "Superflex unbreakable all-weather polycarbonate." I'll say they're unbreakable. I rode through one of the construction-related gaping holes in Main St. on my way to work yesterday morning, and the rear fender clip popped off the frame. The fender started swaying left and right, then grabbed my pants leg. Because my bike is fixed, I couldn't stop pedaling. My left foot quickly pulled the fender back, bending it, and pushed it into the spokes of the rear wheel.

By the time I was able to stop, the fender was nearly doubled back and clicking on each passing spoke. I was able to pull the fender out, and it instantly popped back into its normal shape. I rotated the support hardware along the wheel, and the fender easily clipped back to the frame. All told, it took less than 20 seconds to fix -- but still, I'd like to figure out why it happened in the first place.

Aaargh! A week off from work spent boozing and snowboarding my way across the BC interior has left me with a blatant lack of cardio. My knee hurts, and I gained fat. I'm also down 70+ points in the commuter challenge, and I don't think I'll be able to make it up before the end of the season. Oh, woe is me!

Cold and wet on the way in...will be wet again on the way home. That looks to be the week in a nutshell. Time to rethink my wet strategy. Can you say rain bike?

A bit windy today. Mostly it was cross or tail winds so it wasn't so bad. Hopefully they'll die down before it is time to head home.

great riding to/from today, with lite wind and tempt at 43deg, what else to ask for?
after waiting at a school bus loading (flashing red lites) an a-ho cager passed car from opposing direction, but no incident. other traffic flowed, accepted my lane claims. no other bicycle commutors seen, still mostly a solo project here!
