Cold, windy, and it was raining (on the way home) to work t'was cold sunny and just a hint of wind... damn wind chill/ vapo chilling, all exposed skin was numb... i was in a t shirt and pants lol... lost some rear traction on a few turns, almost fell but recovered nicly... car behind probably thought WTF is he skiding for lol... fenders rocked no road water on me...
|
Beat the t-storm to work. Locked up, covered up my Brooks w/ a plastic bag and 10 min. later it was coming down hard. Traffic on the way in was ridiculous causing me to weave around traffic the whole way in. It may rain later in the day too so I put the fenders on, just in case.

I must have arrived too early today. No Marching Band or Photographers around anywhere to celebrate my 1,000th commuting mile for 2006. All I found was a pile of work on my desk....sigh.
Had to mooch a ride home last night because there was a mega storm tearing up the place at quitting time. Came back to fetch the bike later with the Jeep since I didnt feel too comfortable leaving it tied to the hitchin post overnight. That meant that I had to ride and extra 6 miles this morning to reach my 1000 miles today... bummer to have to ride the extra miles before work :) [not!] While the common folk are amazed that I have commuted that many miles by bike, I do realize that it's a fairly insignificant number in this audience. |
I'm still getting used to the bigger gear. There was a big cluster of bikes as I came up to 17 Ave. One guy jumped the light, but the roadie at the front reeled him in almost immediately. I took my alternate route and almost caught the roadie on 12 Ave. but he was big-ringing it and going past my turn-off to boot.

Way to go Floyd!! Oops, wrong forum.
Hot and humid. It felt just like Friday. :( Oh yeah, it is Friday. I guess waking up twice during the night added to the "tired" feeling. Did I mention it was humid? |
Second that humid.
I was very sticky when I got to work. Dripping with sweat in fact. Good run though. Looking fwd. to the ride home (FRIDAY!) :D |

I'm sorry, we forgot! http://www.k-state.edu/photo/newwebs...SI2044_055.jpg No commute today, will be swimming in the creek. National Weather Service says to limit outdoor activity to early morning only, since it's gonna be 109° today. Which means I better get my booty out there for a quick ride though the park. |

Ugg. Last night on the way home I was taking a shortcut through a gravel alley and I ran over a huge nail. I had a patch kit and pump but I was only about a mile from home. Hot walk.
This morning I rode my newly built-up tri bike. I'm trying to work out the saddle and bar positions so it's more like a shakedown cruise. |
Smoggy. Hot.
Smoggy as I have ever seen it around here. Hey Atlanta, someone didn't set ya'll on fire again, did they? 'Cause I'd swear that I was down wind from a major conflagration. --A |
-- nice to hear from you too ron, nyrome, *patiently pedaling to leg perfection* |
Had a refreshing ride home courtesy of the rain and puddles splashed on me by cagers. While the cagers probably thought it was funny, I didn't mind since it was actually refreshing, even if it was puddle water. It had been raining heavily prior to the commute home so most of the road crud had already washed into the sewers. Gave the fenders a good workout and didn't have to worry about being sweaty when I got home. Took the FDR MUP and saw two joggers running in the rain so I'm not the only person enjoying the weather.

I hope the same thing happens tomorrow in the ITT. Did you get wet on the way home today? I hit a shower at about the 3+ mile point and it lasted until about mile 6. Wet roads the rest of the way home. Gotta love those fenders. |
106 degrees, hot. Extremely low humidity too. You know when you open the oven and that dry heat rolls out? Yeah, like that. Less traffic at 7pm, guess everyone was hiding inside with their fans and air conditioners, Wimps!

A fellow cyclist helped me out on the way home yesterday.
I was packing up to head home on the lakefront trail here in Chicago and there was a few drops of rain and a really stiff wind out of the north. Not enough rain to wear rain gear yet, but since the wind is cool, if it starts coming down hard, I'll probably want to cover up. So I bungeed my foul weather gear jacket on top of my trunk bag and headed into the wind. The path crosses a couple of intersections at Navy Pier. At the last one, a SUV is partially blocking the crosswalk and, diverting around it, I hop a curb, then head off doing my best Floyd Landis. After about a mile of pounding into the wind, I notice my jacket is gone. I stop and look back for something yellow on the ground, but instead I see another bike rider holding something yellow over his head. Within seconds I have my jacket back. He tells me I lost it at the curb. The way that wind was blowng, if nobody picked it up, that jacket could have made it to St. Louis before I would have caught up with it. So, if you happen to be reading this, jacket-returning-bike-guy, thanks again. |
Nice commute, I am slowly getting off of the sidewalks and becoming VC it is a much smoother ride in the streets then on the sidewalk. I passed some one on a *mart bike good thing there is more commuters he didn't look like he was having much fun, poor guy I shocked a cager when I passed him on the right in a residentual neighbor hood

Well, no complaints here, I went ot the bank. after starting to go 2 other places, commute is only about 10 miles, I was able to use major roads, very few cars, nice change for Utah.
I figure if you are going 5mph side walk is ok, you know head winds, hills, but if I can go half the speed of traffic I feel good about the road, Today I was 25 in a 50 for a ways, then 28 in a 30 and of course they still fly by. Boy bad mistake last night though, reached in the closet and grabbed a pair of Pearl Izumis, a little soiled, I think, by the time I got walking down the ilse at Lowes Hardware I was rank, May I suggest, keep up on the laundry! |
Hotter still! 110 degrees today. Tomorrow is forecast for 114. My wife called to try and give me a ride again today. She saw an elderly lady who rides a bike all over collapse today and require an ambulance. She was out in the car looking for me 5 minutes after my usual time home. Unfortunately I left work 20 minutes behind schedule and added a couple of extra miles, so I was off the usual route. Oops. Ride On.

I got tired of my usual route (that has construction on it anyway) and tried to introduce some variety by taking completely different roads to work yesterday. There new route has some bike lanes and my oh my, those are awful bike lanes. They pretty much mark the door zone. Appalling. And the nasty cagers seem to do really bonehead things if they see you out of the bike lane *sigh*... Still, a break from "same old" was refreshing.

114 degrees today, too hot to deal with honking idiots. Stupid driver tried to sneak up and give the long honk to startle me. As if I can't hear a car on a quiet street. I yelled at the driver and saw I could catch it at the stop sign. I pulled up next to the driver's window and asked what she was honking at. "You were in the middle of the street." The car passed me with 5 feet to spare in the same lane, so this really wide lane wasn't big enough? This section of road is the widest lane in town, and we were the only traffic...Idiot. This heat wave is making me cranky.

There were these 2 kids (2-4 years old) and there father (or what looked like it) and there in the bike way and there on these trikes and there barley moving, im coming it at like 25-30kmph, so i ring my bell twice to make sure they hear it. It wasnt to make them move just to warn them there in the way for other cyclists, i slowed down to pass them safly, and then the father shouts out WOW YOUR BELL WORKS... what an a-hole... i normaly dont reply to that, so i just drove on lol...

Crisp air, blue sky, temperature around 60F. Nice riding weather, especially after the steam baths last week.
A bunny rabbit raced me on the MUP. It gave up and ran off into the weeds eventually. :p |
Nice morning for a ride. About 65 degrees at start, 70 at the end. Light traffic, a cool breeze. It was pretty darn relaxing :)
I passed some kid on his lil BMX Bike, weaving back and forth on the trail, talking on his cellphone. I thought only SUV drivers did that. Grrr. |
I passed the same guy twice on my commute this morning because he was a scum-bag red light runner.
There are 2 guys at work who carpool together and they always heckle me when they see me on the road, all for fun though. I've joked about them biking into work the 32km. Well today, they show up on their bikes, I'm totally impressed. It makes my 5km ride look pathetic. I totally praised their effort, and tried to offer some helpful tips that I learned the hard way. |
Fast ride in. Got to work in less than 10 minutes due to traffic conditions that allowed me to just ride w/o zigzagging around traffic like I usually do so I was able to rip it up. Not as sweaty as I usually am either and that's always appreciated.
|
Even hauling a 25lb pack, the ride in was still better than driving the car. Mondays and Fridays the laptop and related goodies make the trip. Add on some clothes, lunch, and misc goodies and it gets to be quite a load. The added weight cost me a gear or so on the hills, but I still made it in good time.
The legs were feeling the effects of a 50 mile burn session yesterday, but seemed happy to spin the lead out. Weather was fairly cool and cloudy, but somewhat humid for Colorado. Seems like we usually run in the 25% range, but it was 60something% this morning. Cars seemed well behaved this morning...good on them :) |
Today was my first cycle commute in 25 years.
This morning, I decided that I would go ahead and ride, even though I had to carry a satchel that I don't usually carry... So I used my Delta cargo net to hold the satchel on my bike, and put everything else in my backpack... I was going to use my cheap pannier, but that will start tomorrow. I took it easy on the ride, but still sweat a little more than I thought I would, maybe partly because of the backpack... tomorrow I will take it easier. Also, after I was in the office, I realized that I forgot my computer on the bike, so I had to take a couple of minutes to go down and get it... I don't want anything that easy to remove on my bike all day. Two hiccups... 1) The satchel fell off before I got out of the parking lot. I got more creatiuve about strapping it on more tightly, and made it the rest of the way to work. 2) The ID I use at work was on my belt (as usual) when I left home... it is not there now. So, I get to go through the minor ordeal of getting new ID issued. So, I made it to work, and will file a report with a picture of my commuter this evening. |
I had a nice ride in this morning. It was a little cooler than it has been recently, and I felt like I had a little more energy.
There was one issue, though: As I was riding down the multi-use path I normally take, there was a guy coming from the opposite direction passing a couple of people in a blind turn (why people can't just wait a couple seconds until they're out of a turn so they can see what's ahead of them, I don't know...). He was in my lane, headed towards me, and wearing a Phonak jersey. So, I said "Heads up, Floyd!" I'm not sure if he heard me or not, but I felt pretty clever. :p |
Glad to be back on the bike. Helped teach a class in Athens, GA on Saturday and Sunday so did lots of driving this weekend. Sixty-five miles each way times four. I'm not used to driving and working l-o-n-g days. :(
I was tired this morning but the ride felt good, even though I was slower than usual. I hope I'm a little perkier for the ride home. http://users.pandora.be/eforum/emoti.../happy/050.gif |
great ride today...lots of sun, a little cooler than it has been lately (but i'm not complaining). did a longer loop around the lake, then hit up the ocean blvd. the only bad part was riding briefly behind a garbage truck....
