Last night: The heat index said it was 103, I actually stopped halfway and switches to a cooler shirt. Went through both water bottles, but otherwise, the commute was nice. Im sure I got a nice tan, or burn:)

This morning: Good ride in, it was about 75, sunny, light breeze. Course, tonight's supposed to be hotter then yesterday. Time to start hydrating :)

Ride home last night was fast.. just one of those afternoons when you get out of the office and feel compelled to get away as fast as you can :). Dusted off the tandem and took the misses out for an evening downtown tour. Looked like rain, it sprinkled a tad but never rained. All in all a great ride.

This morning was a cool and cloudy 58f on the way to the office. Nothing special of note... just a nice ride in. People keep asking if I really rode my bike today. Guess maybe I should have checked the forcast before I came in..

WhiteRabbit 08-01-06 08:12 AM

Rain. OMGWTFBBQ rain. Six or more inches of water on the roadways rain. And lightning, lots of lightning.

pinkrobe 08-01-06 08:45 AM

My wife was up reading until 1:00 a.m. and kept me awake. I need caffeine... I think I rode my bike today...

juliebeanpie 08-01-06 09:34 AM

Crazy. It was 113° a few days ago. This morning's ride required a light jacket, as it wasn't yet 60° when I left. Absolutely lovely ride in. I wish I were still riding, instead of being here in front of the computer.

RonH 08-01-06 09:40 AM

Another hot one in Atlanta. Supposed to be ~96F (36C) this afternoon with a code orange smog alert.
Only saw 3 commuters this morning. Are the high temps and smog alert keeping everyone off the bike and in their cars? Not me. I just unzip the jersey and get as much "natural" cooling as possible. :)

HardyWeinberg 08-01-06 10:19 AM

Nice cool ride. I've been taking a very direct route lately rather than my more recent meandering. Bike lane on 4-7 lane (depending on where/how you count) much closer to cars, but smoother than bike path, give or take all the broken glass.

A new bakery opened across the street from my kids' daycare. Closed Mondays, and I had too much food this am to justify it, but I think tomorrow I will stop there for some, uh, more breakfast after dropping them off.

caloso 08-01-06 10:50 AM

Nice cool morning. I kept my armwarmers on the whole time. Second day in a row I've ridden my Caldaro, my neo-retro bicicletta Italiana. Not exactly a commute bike but it's nice weather, I'm only carrying a shoulder bag, and it just begs for a few more km. I'll ride the bomber tomorrow when I pull the kids in the trailer.

Roody 08-01-06 11:46 AM

Still 85 degrees F when I rode home at midnight. Today the heat index is 110. we're not used to that kind of heat here--it's about all people are talking about. I stop at the airconditioned library midway on my commute to cool down.

I moved to a great new apartment last week. Same commute--just 1/2 mile further.

RonH 08-01-06 11:49 AM

http://emoticons4u.com/cool/1245.gif WOW!! I went out to grab some lunch and it was hot as ****! I'm glad I only rode 0.9 mile (each way) to Whole Foods. My Docker shorts were soaked when I got back.

Tadley Porter 08-01-06 01:38 PM

Great ride this morning, almost chilly in shorts and short sleeves. Sure beats the recent triple digits. Took the dirt trail option...quiet and no cagers for 1/4th of my 12 miles. :) A great way to start the day!

vtjim 08-01-06 01:47 PM

This morning I got thunderstorms. This afternoon, well, I'm leaving in about 20 minutes, and here are the current conditions:

Temp: 92F
Dewpoint: 77F
Index: 106F

And a good tailwind, which is bad for cooling purposes.

Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate.

crtreedude 08-01-06 03:05 PM

I was cut off by a bull this morning. Thankfully I was on the brakes at the time.

ryanparrish 08-01-06 04:04 PM

did a loooong commute today I had chores to get done in holland strapped all the crap to the rack and rode back to allendale cool thing was a might my neighbor at a local coffee shop he filled me up with organic lemonade don't think I could do any better I love the fact of having a beater I don't have toworry about so much ( I just need to get home on it thats all ) having a rack is so pleasing then I dont have to pay some one to take me out some where or having to go get the car from the parents got to get groceries tonight no panniers yet for the rack so I might be strapping a grocery bag to the top of the rack. Any one ever get called a messenger while on their bike is this a good thing or not?

cruzMOKS 08-01-06 04:46 PM

Another 100 degree day. Was not that bad 4 miles 1 way. I had a tail wind which ment that there was no breeze in my face.

TRUMPHENT 08-01-06 07:18 PM

I finally got flatted on my Scwalbe Marathon coming home about 5 blocks from home. Super sharp roofing nail got me. I think I picked it up going through an intersection where I had to pay more attention to the traffic than the road immediatly in front of the bike. Oh well, it was over 700 miles of flat free rear tire. I enjoyed every inch of it. :)

tomg 08-01-06 08:14 PM

another f-n flat tire (rear) on commuter, noticed at 7:30am on way out; had to "employ" 'bent (got many -notices-) !
HOT rides (x2)!!
no extra miles today (heat)!

scottmorrison99 08-01-06 09:38 PM

It was cool in the morning, still a little stiff from riding Bolinas Ridge yesterday. Ride home was fast and comfortable. Ride On.

chephy 08-02-06 05:19 AM

I keep trying new routes to work (I'm usually too tired to try any new things on the return trip - just turn on the autopilot and try to get home as fast as I can). Yesterday I decided to give a try to a downhill recreational path that usually is very lightly used. It runs through a valley, so there are no intersections, which are my biggest pet peeve about MUPs. There are plenty of blind corners though but the moderately busy road that parallels has just as many, and I think if I had to choose, I'd pick blind corners on an MUP. :) There is also a trecherous muddy patch and some branches overhanging very low; the city should really take better care of the paths!

A nice thing is that the path spits you out onto another practically intersectionless road! All in all about half of this route to work is intersection-free, which really helps the speed. Zoom-zoom-zoom!

The weather is killing me however... especially on the way back... and the way back is all uphill too...

Got honked at for taking the (narrow, very narrow) lane going uphill on a four-lane arterial. Had to be a taxicab of course. The driver honked a few times and I just kept shaking my head (No means no, baby! :D). Finally he passed me in the next lane, not dangerously at all.

egonlou 08-02-06 06:24 AM

Whats the problem? It was only 86 degrees at 6:40am on Canal St.

Yesterday riding home, the sweat just burned right off. I wore my jersey for the the first time in a while. Enjoyed having the pockets in the back and how light it was in this heat. Might have to buy a couple more.

Mr_H 08-02-06 06:40 AM

Last Night: About 104 heat index I think is what the weather folks said. I had lots of water, so that didn't bother me. The wind however, ugh. Gusts of 15-20 mph against my face as I was going home....toss in the heat, it was like standing in front of a friggin furnace.
One of my bike brakes had an issue too, the lil screw keeping the brake spring pushed in broke, so I had to go and get that repaired last night. Grumble.

This morning: Not too bad. It's 80s, and I sweated up a storm, but it was pleasant. They closed off part of the sidewalk/path that I use instead of the road (Which is 4 lanes, 55 mph). That'll be fun.

I had to tell a contractor to move his truck which was straddling a path entrance into campus.
He gave me look like, "WTF?" - and I gave him a look like, "Don't make me ask you twice..."

- he complied.

kylecrispin 08-02-06 07:03 AM

I just did my first "early-shift" commute. I left the house around 4:30 AM. Golden Gate park is kinda spooky at that time. Also the sprinklers were still on in the panhandle (small park attached to golden gate with bike path). I got sprayed! Luckily I had a change of clothes and a towel at work cause I read the Noob threads.

luckysnafu 08-02-06 07:47 AM

Tired this morning from my late night last night and didn't sleep all that well. Left late and took it easy since it was already in the low 80s before 8am. Should be a HOT ride home this afternoon. Got a wave from another commuter this morning that I usually don't see since I leave earlier. Yesterday on my way home I saw a bunch of guys on bike on the sidewalks around town despite the upper 90 temps and I also saw a guy still on his bike using a payphone (yes, they do still exist!)

MyPC8MyBrain 08-02-06 08:16 AM

Been getting a break on the weather here. Cool and cloudy last night on the way home. This morning I almost put on a windbreaker. Knowing that I would overheat on the hill to the office, I just left it off. The cool breeze was refreshing.

A bunny decided to race me this morning. He was running along next to me on the grassy strip. In the end, I won. I think his legs were too short....

pinkrobe 08-02-06 08:23 AM

My wife had a 2 minute head start on me this morning. I tried to reel her in, and was doing okay until I got stuck behind a bus and missed a light. She's pretty [and] fast!

Wulfheir 08-02-06 09:08 AM

Yesterday was my biggest day for distance since I was a kid. 63km (not much for many of you). This morning was my fastest commute to work since I've been keeping track of time. 26.1km/hr avg.

HardyWeinberg 08-02-06 10:42 AM

a bit of blah this morning, riding w/ the cars on the main drag just not so much fun today. Pedalling is always good, at least.

Oh yes, I got tailgated by a log truck when I was going 20 in a 25, he passed me, pulled ahead, cut me off to make his right turn in the space of a couple blocks. I think he was going really fast. His apparent speed may have been exaggerated by his lack of mufflers of course. I was annoyed that I couldn't get up to 25, but no need to play chicken w/ 18 wheelers either.

caloso 08-02-06 10:56 AM

Wonderful commute this morning. I was able to convince my wife to ride in with me as I pulled the kids in the trailer to daycare. We took a mellow route through Midtown, down Capitol to drop off my wife at her building, then 4 or 5 blocks more to daycare. I had to take a fairly circuitous route to avoid the main commute routes but that gave us a chance to go over the light rail tracks (Train! Train!) and some street work (Tractor! Steam roller! Crane!).

That was the most fun commute of the year.

RonH 08-02-06 03:18 PM

Gee, now that it's time to go home, I have time to post something.

Different ride this morning. Left home about 10:00 (had to wait for the exterminator who showed up at 9:15). Very different traffic. Gee, I wonder why? :o
Hot as ****. Got to work and was dripping wet.
Went out at lunch but only rode three blocks to an eatery.

It's now 5:20 and the temperature is 94F (heat index is 99F). I hope I don't melt. ;)
