Damned tropical storm Alberto soaked me, but I rode a new fix conversion to work today, which made the splatterfest fun.
I stayed up till midnight last night getting it tight - hell if a little rain is gonna keep me off the roads with a new build! |
* jack *: where's the pics of your new fixie?
No bike commute today. Had to drive to NJ for a meeting. Saw 3 fixies and a SS on the West Side MUP while I was driving. 5 years ago, I probably wouldn't have seen any. Got to work and had two elevator riders get off at the 2nd floor. Why take the nice spiral staircase right in front of the elevators to the 2nd floor when you can ride in comfort on an elevator? Oh yeah, forgot to mention I stepped on a dead rat on my way home last night when I put my foot down at a red light. I thought it was something stinkier and browner, but it was just a mashed up rat. |
Rode for a few blocks with one of the wrenches (Rob) from Intown Bicycles last night.
Nice cool ride this morning thanks to Alberto (I guess). Only saw one other commuter. I thought I'd see several with this exceptional weather. |
No commute for me today. :-/ My wife forgot to sleep last night and needed me to take her to class. On a side note my ride home last night was better, even if it is getting quite hot.
|
Score one for me being a slacker! It poured rain all night, but stopped mere minutes before I walked out the door! Getting out of bed late rocks!
|
shortest route in today (4.5 miles) I'm really going to miss the variable commute when I move further away from work later this summer... :-( Yesterday's ride home was sweet, I pushed pretty hard and it was pretty fast, but I still think I need to rest before the weekend.
Yesterday a coworker drove past me as I was riding, he held his hand out the window and waved like crazy, then I cought him at a light and asked him if he wanted to race. He laughed, but I was only half joking, the roads I know he takes to go home are pretty congested, and I cut through neighborhoods and accross those roads, I almost went an extra half mile to see if I could pull up on the main street and see if I beat him...next time I will. I think it's about a 50/50 shot :-) I'm wishing I had done it though.... |

Well, it finally happened. I fell at a traffic light. I was debating whether to unclip or to try and trackstand through the light. And in my indecision, I just fell over. D'oh!
Only hurt my pride. |

My fiance got behind a commuter on Tryon during some of the heavier rain. She said he was taking the lane but nearly impossible to see and almost getting clipped by those impatient with the traffic. She offered him a ride since she had the car with the rack on it only to receive a rude reply of "I'm not riding in any CAR." I could understand him being stressed out by the conditions but she's an occasional commuter as well was upset by his use of tone with an honestly concerned fellow cyclist. |
Already 65F by 9:00AM this morning. Muggy. Partly cloudy.
Had a tornado touch down about 100 miles NW of us last night. We could see the wall cloud from here. Classic text book form. Never did rain here in town or on my commute home yesterday. I'm sure glad I've stopped listening to the new weather guy on our morning news. |
good commute in the morning. the weather was great and the commute in was pretty fast, although I pulled off PB Drive early again because of a few cars stacked up behind me, this time with a guy in a blue car at the front who looked like he was going to buzz me (he was kind of getting 3/4 of the way into the other lane and staying there as he got closer behind me). other than that, great commute in.
the ride back was to my parents house. had a guy in a pickup truck get out at a stopsign and tell me "don't ride on my ass" (as chronicled in further detail in this thread). got cut off while I was walking the bike through a crosswalk (shortcut around two major arterials). the streets in my old neighborhood are still pretty rough and bumpy but it looks like one of them was fixed up a little bit. maybe it's just me. oh well. other than those two incidents, pretty good ride back. |

I am a first time poster here, but here goes: After not having done this in quite a few years, I biked in to the office today. From South Brooklyn, in NY to Grand Central Station in midtown Manhattan, about 14 miles. My bike is a pretty new Specialized Roubaix which I outfitted with Armadillo tires for puncture resistance. While still in Brooklyn, I got a blowout in the front, a few blocks from a bike shop. Musta done something wrong when I inflated the tires this morning. Near Prospect Park, I laid over to avoid getting hit by a blind driver, but no big deal, just a few scratches. Over the Brooklyn Bridge, insane traffic conditions in Manhattan, managed ok until I got a flat in the rear. Fortunately I was a few blocks from a bike shop so I got it repaired, there was a hole in the tube near the valve, no glass or other sharp object found. A few blocks later, I slowed way down, somehow forgot to unclip from the Look pedals, just fell over like something out of Monty Python. lost some finger skin on that one. Made it to the garage, showered at the gym, all in all it took about 2 hours for a 1 hour commute, but I'm gonna ride home this evening, and if I survive, I'll do it again tomorrow-I think.

It also looked worse in Raleigh, from what I saw on the radar... |
I didn't commute today for the first time in about 2 months. I have to pick up about 10 cases of beverages after work. I feel like such a slacker!

Well, the commute this morning started off with the theme of BUGS. First off, I get about a half a mile from my house and my front derailler decides that it want to throw the chain. Mechanical bug. I put the chain back on and head down the big hill (I hit 34.7 mph!).
I get to the bike path, and what do I run into? Swarm after swarm of gnats. Yay! More bugs! Soon enough (about 3 miles), the bugs subsided. So now I'm cruising along, and a fellow commuter starts drafting. He passes me after 2-3 miles and lets me draft him for about 3 miles. Best part about it was my average speed for that stretch was close to 20mph. After all was said and done, I got to work about 15 minutes earlier than usuall. Overall, a good morning commute. -Jim |

excellent! temps of 105+ in the afternoon but I made sure to drink enough water before I left, (about 100 ounces) plus I had some with me. I beat my best time! saw several other riders/commuters on the way to and from.
Jerk in a jeep thought the bike lane was a turn lane. he almost fit. In The morning some major cop thing was happening along my route-- four to six cruisers and police walking around the neighborhood. wonder what that was about. good ride both ways. |

It gets easier nolucker. Especially if you take the Manhattan Bridge. Less peds and separate bike and and pedestrian lanes. Keep it up. Summer's around the corner and it's a great time to be outside. |
Ride in was fast and smooth, like a Sunday morning commute. Ride home started sprinkling, coworkers offered me a ride. I said thanks anyway, but have you ever known me to not ride because of rain? Fast ride home with a tailwind. No problems with anybody, as it should be.:D
|
Good ride to work ,but on the way home had to take a detur. Still a good ride . Have a good nite .
|
Not sure if I'll ride today. :(
Another l-o-n-g evening with the m-in-law. :crash: We got home and FINALLY ate supper at 8:55 PM. Went to bed dead tired at 9:30. Elderly parents are worse than kids. They require more of your time and are as helpless as a 6 month old baby. |
Funny if we pass each other, nolucker. I have a Roubaix with Armadillos that I ride from Fort Lee, NJ to Metrotech in Brooklyn.
Skip the BB and take the Manhattan Bridge bike path. Alot less traffic and it leaves you a little further uptown to get to GC. |
Dropping my biggest mileage to date today on my commute - 34 miles in, at least that on the way home (unless I decide to spin further to a nice clean 40). Beautiful morning in Central New Jersey. Took me two hours and 8 minutes. Nice clean ride - no mechanical problems or near misses.
Is it time to go home yet? :-) |
Raining cats, dogs and rhinocerouses today. Almost got taken out by a Miata, but his/her no-look lane change wasn't too aggressive for me to avoid. I was going to go on a nice road ride tonight, but it's not looking good...
