Awesome! 50 degrees on the way in at 5:00 pm and 40 on the way home at 6:00 am. Quite windy though. Which is ok for my short commute. Just gives me a better workout.
|
Nice ride both ways. Weekend commutes rock, weekend work doesn't.
|
First day of commuting since the week before Christmas. We had alot of time off work and I only got to go out riding 3 times during my vacation and those were just to the store and back.
The thermomometer said 46F, but nothing about the 25mph headwind with 35mph gusts I'd be facing my whole trip. I got to work in a little over an hour and my legs are still sore, that was 7 hours ago. |
weird to say this but didn't commute today (still off from school!) so I took a 45 mile road ride in the 70 degree weather we are having!!!! started off with leg warmers and ended up stripping them off ten miles into the ride because I was overheating!
Strange. The smells are just not right. It doesn't smell of spring or of winter. I'm going to ride while the riding is good but this is down right eerie weather for the Northeast in January. |
Minnesota Commute
Hello, my commute is about 12 miles, mostly urban/suburban. I commute all seasons and my favorite time is when it snows. My company moved from a building with locker rooms and showers to a new building with none of those amenities; however, with some ingenuity, I can still shampoo my hair and get ready for work each morning (it is a pretty formal environment). My favorite commuting bike is my Surly fixed gear, but if it is really snowy or icy, I use my Cannondale Bad Boy.

Hey Kirk! welcome. |
Good ride, and I really like my new lobster gloves. Been riding a lot faster lately due to no wind.
|
OK, Now that 06 is a wrap, time to brag about your 06 commuting. -Number of Commutes? -Commuting miles? Percent of Commutes? Total gas saved? Carbon footprint reduced by XXX tons of Carbon? SOUND OFF!

Mid 30Fs this morning, light rain, moderate headwind. Supposed to have a nice tailwind for the ride home today, and more rain. As for commute miles in 06, I'm about 13 miles per day, and I ride almost every day except for a roughly 6-week period last winter (MUP snowed in) so over 3,000 miles. My Tacoma gets roughly 21MPG around town so that's around 150 gallons of gas. |
Steady rain this morning, mid 40s F. Perfect for my Huffy 3-speed internal hub. Kept fairly dry in rain gear, except socks. Note to self: Bring spare socks to keep in desk for wet days I forget to bring spares!
|
So. Much. Wind. Slowed me down a good 3-4mph from my usual ride in against a head wind, beyond that, a light sprinkle, so not to shabby.
|
Fine ride in today. Though my bike was a bit heavier than usual...
I'm heading out on a touring/camping trip for MLK weekend, so I'm ramping up the weight on my commute during gradually during this week. Today's gear -- stove/cook kit, all warm clothes, tools/safety gear. Tomorrow -- adding the tent & sleeping pad. Wednesday -- sleeping bag & rest of the clothes. |

Might snow today--a nice tailwind would be a blast in the snow for my return trip!:D |
Not bad. Sunny and low 40s (6C) with a slight headwind that will be a tailwind for the ride home. :D
Now that I'm 62  I'm easing toward retirement and started working a 6 hour day (9:00AM to 3:00PM) last week (January 2). Leaving at 3:00 gives me time to do a few things in the afternoon. When the days start getting a little longer (and warmer) I'll be doing after work rides to Stone Mountain. |
The party's over on the east coast. It actually ended here overnight. I swear my home thermometer said 47° at 6:20, but the storage bldg thermometer along my route said 40°. Upper 30's downtown: I was a bit underdressed. It's supposed to be cool and breezy this afternoon, so I had my gloves with me. Wish I had the earmuffs, though...

The weather is gross again. Temps around 2C, with rain/wet snow. Easily manageable with just a waterproof shell, all-weather helmet, waterproof gloves and a face mask. Not pleasant, though.
|
It was only -2C, but the wind dropped that down to about -10C. The forecast is calling for winds up to 100 km/h, so I'll be riding uphill into a headwind on the way home. Lovely.
|
When the dog woke me at 3am to go outside (she has no sense of time and sleep), I saw it was snowing. I was all happy about it too: Finally! A snow ride! I've had these studded tires on the bike for a month now, but it's been fifty friggin degrees lately and I haven't ridden in snow yet.
By the time I got out of the house at 7am...all that snow had melted, so it was another cold, wet ride to the university. Sigh.....well, at least I can still ride:) |
I was expecting the rain to lighten up as the morning progressed, but it just got heavier and colder as I was crossing the Potomac into DC. Passing the hundreds of cars inching along on the GW Parkway made it worthwhile, though.
I was soaked to the bone--definitely need to invest in some better rain gear if I want to continue riding in this stuff. I can get away with it when the temps are in the 50s, but it would have been chilly otherwise. |
Holy cow. I took the mountain bike out and rode 4 miles in the snow and ice. That was one heck of a workout. Eeek! At least it was fun.
|
Nice ride. Dark, 40-ish F. Supposed to get way cold and maybe snow later this week. Not fair, not what I signed up for! Actually now that the sun is rising it is looking pretty clear, so I'm surprised its not colder out than it was.
|
Chilly: 28F/-2C when I left the house at 6:10 to take the long detour route in. I don't think my wife is too wild about the look but my chin is glad I grew the beard. I only wish it was as black as the last time I grew one....
Other than the cool temps, it's just about a perfect day to ride a bike: calm and bright blue skies. I'd been riding the fixie to work almost every day since November but there's zero chance of rain today and a perfect opportunity to ride the go-fast bike. Maybe I'll even be able to get in a few extra miles on the way home too. |
Well I decided to cut through the park today but blowing snow made this impossible. Had to turn around and join back up with my normal route. Before I made it I wiped out on some ice. Tore a nice whole in my new rain pants but no real damage to me or the bike. The bike trail had snow blown on to it so some spots were rough although it is fun to negotiate the snow.
Had my first 'get on the sidewalk' yell today. Even it was legal for me to do so... not possible when there is 3 feet of snow covering them. I guess it ticked me off but then I thought about the lady that actaully stopped at the bike path crossing to let me go. This doesn't happen often so I guess it balances out. |
Commute was great, though it started out with a stupid honk from a stupid cager on a virtually empty road. But then he passed me with sufficient clearance, so who cares? I haven't filled up my tires since last year - until today - so suddenly the bike feels MUCH faster. :) And it's a hot, hot January in Toronto. :)

Today was my first commute to work! I’m hooked!!!! I never felt so good at work.
It’s an intermediate ride. 12 miles from La Jolla to Mira Mesa (San Diego). I need to change the route a little because I had to ride up Torrey Pines without enough time to warm up. I’ll try to do it at least twice a week! |

i'm just glad that it's clear enough to get the wheels rollin. i wiped out going down the ramp to the bike path and almost again coming off it. those are the icier sections of the path. didn't get hurt or anything, so i'm just glad i could do some riding. can't wait until i can ride the fixed gear with some confidence, but that might not happen soon since we're likely getting snow again thursday - saturday. argh!!! maybe if wednesday is clear enough, i'll go out for a few miles.
|
Yippee, -2C with a windchill of -7C. Finally a dry ride to work. I hate 2'C and rain. You can't enjoy any outdoor activity in those conditions. Unless you are waist deep wearing neoprene waders in freezing water fly fishing for winter steelhead. Even then at -2 it is bit drier above water although your eyelets have freezing up issues unless you wax them.
|
Not sure why but I was really dragging a$$ today. It was really warm, this morning it was in the 60's and this afternoon in the high 70's. The Santa Ana's were blowing today. That might of had something to do with it.
