All was well this morning, no traffic, warmer temps (-23C with no windchill)... it was a good morning. Some very icy sections on some of the side streets, thank god for studs, even 50% warn ones! :D
|
Pushed hard today.. Kept the heart rate up. The weather was good, and the ride was good. Felt slightly nautious at the end, but it subsided quickly.
I'm planning on taking a longer, more hilly route home. |
Today's commute was wet and windy in the morning but the rain kindly stopped for the journey home.
I also managed to finish work very early today and had a wonderful time when I noticed that the cops had decided to blitz the area today. There was a speed camera checking all the people in a hurry, there were several traffic wardens ticketing cars parked wrongly ( there was one booking parents who had parked outside a school to pick up their kids, he wasn't making many friends:D ) and to finish it off there were other cops pulling over young boy racers so that they could check their cars. All in all it was one of those days that made you feel great to be a cyclist:D |
Went to the doctor today to check out some tightness in my left lung and found out I have Pnemonia! Guess I am off the bike for at least a week. :( I guess I could perform some needed bike maintenance while I am out of action though.
|
This morning was good. Temp was a cold -27C (-17F) but there was 0 wind and very little traffic. Still fighting with the goggles fogging up in the cold though. I recal reading about a fix for that, I'll have to search for it today.
 |
Kris, try dipping the lenses in dish soap and then drying with a paper towel (no rinsing) - this works for hockey visors.
My commutes this week have been a lot warmer than yours, but still on the cool side - -8 C or 17 F with 15 mph west winds giving wind chills of -14 C or 7 F. I've been warm except for my feet. I've been surprised to see a couple of fellow bike commuters in the past coiuple of days - one even had a rear blinkie operating and was riding on the road. Most of the ones I see are sidewalk riders sans lights or helmets. It'll be back to driving to work for the next week, on call again. |
Nice dry and sunny morning today. One argument with a taxi driving on the wrong side of the road!, one motorist turning in front of me from the opposite direction and a near collision with a wobbly cyclist who wobbled into the road an extra 4ft just as I'd moved out to overtake. Some days it is as if everyone is out to get you.
Hope you all have better luck!, Cheers, Ed |
Super foggy again here this morning. We need a storm to come in and dislodge it. I took the long loop in to work this morning trying to keep the heartrate in a mellow aerobic zone.
Last night on the way home I was stopped at a light. It's dark. A guy on a skateboard (wearing all black, of course!) comes up behind me in the bike lane and blazes right through the intersection, causing a driver to jam on the brakes. The skater then yells a nasty at the driver! After the light changed, I caught up to the guy and said "Dude, I hope you filled out your organ donor card." The skater repeated the same nasty word he used on the driver. Well, at least there's a group out there that motorists consider even lower than us! :) |
The southerly wind is gone. The heat is returning.

Not a great week this week... I managed to break a spoke last night, on the front wheel. Whilst braking hard as I came to a junction, there was that tell tale "ping" that we all know and love :irritated
This morning, at a set of traffic lights, waiting to turn right from the leg of the "T" we finally get our chance, only for a cyclist to sail straight through across the top of the "T" in front of me. I politely asked "Don't you stop for red?" to which she replied "No". After that I was lost for words. Its no wonder sometimes that cyclists have a bad image. Aaaaag! :crash: This morning provided a great tailwind for the ride in though! Have a good weekend all Ed |
I was a bit later in this morning which meant dawn was just about to break as I was riding. Nice to know that the end of the dark mornings is in sight.
Ride in was good, kept looking at the time to see if I could do a couple of extra miles I was enjoying it that much. Sadly I didn't have time:cry: I'll have to stop early and make up for it on the way home. |
And I got the first post on Page 100 as well!!:D

A combination of high winds, the cold (both temperature and the viral kind) have kept me off the bike since just before Christmas. I'm desperate to start commuting again.
I'm sure I had the same layoff last year. January in Scotland!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |
the ride in this am was kinda hectic its friday and all the car drivers wait till the last minute to scrape and go. Crossing major streets was a long wait. One lady in a little red honda almost backed into the car in front of me and then kept backing out. When she reached the street I saw why..... she had a small 3 or 4 inch oval at the bottom of the window that the defroster had melted to see thru. She backed into my lane right in front of me and stopped I rolled up within a few feet and spread my arms as if to say wtf are u doing big dummy. You know last year that would have ruined my whole day, this year it is just a source for pity. I pity her because she is tied to that form of transport. Americans especially talk about the freedom of the open road,(as in driving) in reality corporate america holds people like her prisioner. She has car payments most likely and insurance, gas, and maintence. It was -4 F today with the windchill even with that I enjoyed the ride in. heres the kicker- My direct supervisor was following me for the last 2 blks he turned into the parking lot to park and i continued to the bike rack. Even with changing I was at my desk 5 minutes before he was. You tell me how driving is faster in an urban enviorment? Obviously cars are the only option for some people. I have a good friend that is handicapped enough that riding a bicycle is unthinkable. For her a car is a necessity, However a vast majority of us can and should cycle. What better way to break the chains of corporate america? Just refuse to buy their product!

Fairly cold, that's how it was!
10F / -12C with wind chill it was -4F / -20C I had on thermal underwear (top and bottom), two t-shirts, wind pants, wind jacket, balaclava, two pair of gloves. But only one pair of socks with my standard MTB shoes. Needed more. But it was OK for the 6 mile / 10K ride in. Except for the tears flowing from my eyes and the mucus flowing from my nose  |
It was a balmy 16 F (-9 C) on the way in this morning. This was the first time this week that I have seen morning commute temperatures higher than 0 F (-18 C). And the gusty winds have also diminished. Spring is right around the corner. :)
|
Last night's snowstorm fizzled out, resulting in only an inch (2 cm) of the stuff. Temperature 23 F /-5 C, but the extra work required due to the snow kept me quite warm, even though I was only wearing Gortex windbreakers over my suit. I figured it had warmed up a lot ftom yesterday until I got to work and checked the thermometer.
I got to make "first tracks" over an unplowed mile of my trip and "second tracks" over another mile. Everything else was clear. The big reward was that nice "swoosh" sound and feel of tires rolling through fresh, dry snow. Paul |
Decent commute today, albeit cold and messy as I cycled throught the slush. I will have to give my bike a good cleaning at the weekend as I'm sure the salt is not doing me any favors.
This was my first week cycling since Dec 23 dues to a combination of sickness and laziness. It feels great and I cycled 4 out of 5 days which is pretty good for me. BIking to and from work is the only time I truly have to myself. |
Greaat ride today. The sun was up and about 20f.
|
Good ride today. Ride home tonight was interesting. I had, what I think was, a screech owl startle me. There is an field near my work. Riding along in the dark... all quiet...EEEEK. I never saw it, but it was very close. I don't have too many wildlife encounters, because I live in the city.
|
last night's ride home was awesome! roads are clearing bot of ice and mad cagers!! LOL Weekends are always nice for commuting. I went and rode 6 more miles last night. I was warmed up perfectly and did not want to get off the bike.
|
This morning the humidity was a killer. I don't know how it could be so humid without actually raining. I hate summer.
|
Wet and windy weather here today, but still an invigorating ride to work. The ride home promises a very strong headwind!
Cheers, Ed |
It started to rain just as I crossed the bridge this morning. Very cold rain too. I stopped and put on a waterproof and my earwarmer.
3 miles to go and I picked up a thorn in the front tyre. First commute of the year and first puncture !! By the time I changed the tube my hands were filthy, and I'd cooled down so am feeling a bit sore now. To think I commute because I enjoy it. :) |
Hi Chewa,
