My commute this morning cheered me up no end!
The reason! Saw the first Lambs out in the fields at Beaufront lodge, sign of warmer spring days to come :) |
yesterday I got a real nice reaction from a lady at a gas station. There is a small convienence store close to my house that I usually stop at for pop and stuff. the clerks and I were discussing my new bike and i mentioned that i found it to be quite stable on ice and snow. A lady was listening to us and she looked at me in disbelief and said "you rode that bicycle in the ice and snow?" I told her that the biggest problem was people in cars who do not scrape their windows good enough and cannot see me! she had no reply. I like it when people look at me like I am doing something incredible when I am doing something i enjoy.

Happy to report that my recent rides have been knee-problem-free. I am 100%, even with some monster hill climbs thrown into the mix.
My schedule of late has forced me to scale back on bike-commuting but I work it in every single chance I get. Today's ride was pretty cool in that it was foggy as could be. I had all the lights blaring on this one!! Looking forward to the ride home. |
Today's ride was the warmest in 2 weeks, 20 degrees F (-6 or 7 for you C types), and the roads were dry. Waiting at an intersection near work for a hole in traffic I had a motorist cross the street, stop in the lane next to me and say, "You are a machine, I see you every day." Was that a compliment? Coming home the wind had picked up a lot and the sand on the roads was really stinging.

Another stupidly hot morning. I think it might be starting to melt my brain a little. I almost did the big lose after allowing myself to be distracted by a stupidly hot female cyclist who was riding the other way. I think I need to get myself a wife who can discipline me in these matters.

Didn't your mother ever teach you to be terrified of beautiful women? lol Anyways, the weather here has been crappy. Its really cold, and a big windchill and all, but theres not a whole lot of snow, and i'm not ready to advance to next level of being a nerd by wearing layers of clothes when the sun is beating down in my eyes and I see people out in their Ferraris and Porsches as if it was summer. I wish I had enough money to afford that fancy gortex stuffamjig. Unless anyone can point out some sales? ;) I spend too much money on computers and not enough on equiptement I think. Also on a note though. I got a $50 gift certificate for coloradocyclist.com-mail order of course. That should give me the start I need to accomplishing a dream of mine-custom built roadbike.

Didn't make the commute home last night as my post puncture front tyre was soft when I went to go
My Blackburn pump blew a seal (no - it's just frost on my moustache :) ) and so I had to call my wife to pick me and the bike up. I fixed the pump and rode in this morning. Cool weather, damp but no wind. My left knee is giving me a bit of a twinge but I put that down to only riding on a trainer (no spd's) for the last 3 or 4 weeks. |
Hi folks,
Wet and breezy again this morning, but I'm really getting back into the riding now, so nothing can put me off. Actually, nothing can put me off because there is no other way for me to make it to work - rain, shine or worse :) . Ed |
Last night's ride was interesting in that I thought more than once that I'd catch the train at so-and-so station, then ended up blowing by it. Then the next, and so on, until I was home!!
20 miler. Haven't done a 20-mile commute (my normal summertime route) in a while. Felt good. |
Good ride into work today. Got some new winter shoes and they worked great. Also tried out some new tights... not so good. My upper thighs were just about frost bitten.
Just started snowing about an hour ago... the ride home might be kinda interesting. :) PBW |
It getting slightly warmer so ditched the tights and just put on a pair of shorts and it was worth it.
I had my first wolf whistle whilst riding:) so I'm seriously considering shaving my legs now:D . The journey home tonight was very misty and visiblity was poor but luckily there was very little traffic about, so I wasn't to worried about being seen |
Good to have you back Andy. This morning's commute was had wet roads an light drizzle.. Was fun.
The last night's commute had me weaving over tracks on one of my alternate routes. I kept beating the gates by mere seconds on each crossing. That was a fun challenge. Wondering how much rain I will get tonight. |
Back to cold again, 8F with gusty winds. Time to put on the balaclava. I would really like to find some good cold weather mittens so I wouldn't have to put on 3 layers of gloves & mitts. I think I'm spending 5 minutes putting my hand gear on. I may just have to modify my bike pogies so they will fit over my barends. Pogies are the best.

Today was very frosty here in New Hampshire.
We had a temp of -7f and winds gusting to 30. I only ride 10 miles each way but today I could not warm up.Oh well spring is only a couple of months away. |
The bushfires are back again. This morning's ride was done in smoke, it was awful. I truly challenge anyone to come up with worse conditions than what I've been putting up with over the last 12 months. I've happily ridden in hail before and would put up with that every day if it got me out of the smoke and dust storms.

Hi folks,
That's nasty, Chris L, the smoke must be really unpleasant. Last night I managed (in the dark) to ride straight into an enormous pothole at 18 mph. The bone jarring impact caused a really messy pinch puncture of the front tube, which instantly went flat. Fortunately I carry a spare. The amazing thing (apart from not falling) is that the wheel seems fine, which is lucky because I just had a spoke repaired and the wheel re-trued. Must remember about the hole on the way home! Cheers, Ed |
Ed, you were lucky you didn't do yourself some damage.
My ride in this morning was wet cold but no wind. It's picking up now but is from the east so if it stays this way should get a push home. Just as long as they don't close the bridge to bikes. |
approx 16 F - I think thats the coldest weather I have cycled in although this paricular record will probably only last until tomorrow - nice ride - flew in and got almost every light green
|
Chris L - I feel for you. Hopefully the fires will be brought under control soon. :(
Today was my coldest ride yet, -32C (-26F), and I was damn hot! I put on an extra layer of fleece thinking I would freeze. Oh well, I'll know better next time. Worst part about the cold is the added difficulty peddling. I rode the whole way to work 2 gears up from top speed and was grunting the entire way. Can't wait for those summer days when I can race cars again! ;) |
Nothing but showers today...
I kinda like it, riding in the rain, especially with no wind :) My first ride in two weeks and i must say i missed it! The shape was not bad at all, i think running is a good alternative to stay in form. Tomorrow says more showers :D cheers  |
Back in the saddle again! It has been a week since the pain from Pneumonia in my left lung went away and I decided to get back on the bike today. Rode 18 miles to work and felt great! I didn't even mind the excessive stoplights for the most part. Good to be shellless again. Ride was too warm for my microfleece jersey. I think tomorrow I will switch back to the normal jersey and arm warmers.

Great ride in at 16 F, -9 C on the other side of the river from Brennser.
Yesterday's ride involved coming in on the Custis and WO&D from Falls Church after dropping off my wife's car for an oil change. It was an interesting change of pace to ride the trails and even make some tracks on them in the snow. The good thing about the trails was that it was 5-6 miles without a stoplight or stopsign. Felt good to be on my normal route this morning. Saw four other cyclists going the opposite way from me and wondered whether the cold, dry weather is bringing people out. It certainly was a beautiful morning. Paul |
