High 50Fs and a 10-15MPH headwind. Still, it's nice to finally have some proper spring weather. I put my Transworlds back on yesterday so I was smooth and relatively quick. Reeled in a couple other people.

I did a lot of non-commute riding over the weekend. Rode up to The Ethan Allen Tower on Saturday. On Sunday I dragged my wife out for a ride and we helped a woman on the MUP find her lost dog. :o Go us. (We found the dog...)

To borrow some words from a favorite group of mine...."I'm back. I'm back in the saddle again....I'm back, I'm back in the saddle again"

Took most of last week off the bike. Had too many errands to run and too little time. Friday I was up on Brasstown Bald watching Levi pass by me, just 300 m or so short of the finish line. Dude was flying.
Anyway, today's commute was uneventful. Traffic seemed lighter than normal and I made really good time. Averaged 18.02 mph without really trying to ride hard. I think the lower pollen counts are helping my breathing quite a bit. Can't wait for the ride this afternoon. Supposed to be 79F and sunny. That's my kind of weather :)

BigRedSnackFoam 04-23-07 06:50 AM

Great ride in today, set a new PB for average speed, 15.3. Not all that fast but it sure beats my 13mph average when I started riding this year. Felt pretty good, weather was great, low 50s, only a small headwind, sun shining, etc. Had to stop and remove some clothes because I was getting a little too warm. It seemed like it warmed up really quick once the sun came up. I was riding through various cool and warm air zones, felt weird with the temps swinging up and down like that but whatever. This afternoon should still be nice unless I leave work a little late, then I'll have to dodge the occasional rain shower or t-storm.

Midsixties this morning, but a chance of rain, so I had to bring the ol' commuter in (a converted mountain bike). After having ridden my road bike for the past two weeks, this was a huge difference. Nice for a change of pace though:)
Love this weather.

At long last, the day has arrived!

Today was the first day of the year when it was warm enough to commute in a t-shirt and shorts. Hooray!

mikepop 04-23-07 07:55 AM

Great commute today - first day warm enough to ditch the jacket for the morning commute. Was able to push hard to beat out a handful of red lights, which felt good and resulted in one of my best times. The streetcleaners have started to work on the winter sand & salt, so the ride home might be even smoother.

Big Ron 04-23-07 08:30 AM

Very nice ride in today. I had to jury rig my headlight onto my "good" bike's handlebars because my commuter is in the shop for some much needed attention and a new rear derailleur cable. The "good" bike has the newer, larger diameter handlebars and my Cygolite mount from circa 1998 doesn't fit it. The jury rigging worked quite nicely, though i had trouble accessing the on/off swithces. No problem for a few days though. Wore a long sleeve cycling jersey over a sleeveless this AM in anticipation of the 85F temps on the way home....oh yea, I forgot my water bottle this morning, so will need to purchase a bottle for the ride home. Too hot to comfortably go without water for 13 miles.

acroy 04-23-07 08:33 AM

nice 68f, cloudy ride in. strong South wind. Allergies are kickin my butt. Ride felt great though. may be riding home wet!

LordBass 04-23-07 08:49 AM

First clipless commute. First commute of 2007. I'm a wimp - I like nice bike commute weather. :) We had a huge nor'easter last week, it was 40 and tons of rain that washed out roads and homes. Supposed to be 86 today. I love New England.

7.5mi, 0:32:58, 13.5avg, good times.

pinkrobe 04-23-07 08:56 AM

+2C and very sunny on the way in. It's supposed to be 18C tomorrow! I'm on my new IRO finally, and it handles pretty well. I don't think I'll keep the bullhorns on, and I need a new BB so I can use diffferent cranks, as my old 180mm Race Face LPs won't stay tight anymore.

livewirerc 04-23-07 09:56 AM

Great weekend, great ride in this morning. Definitely shorts weather, and there was enough moisture in the air on my ride in to necessitate me changing shirts when I got to work. Looking forward to my ride home.

Chuck G 04-23-07 10:04 AM

Nice ride in this morning, high 50s F. I thought about driving instead because of high winds predicted for this afternoon but decided not to be a wimp. Good thing because I found someone's car keys in the gutter. They had a half dozen grocery store discount key chain cards on their keyring and one of those stores was on my way. I stopped at the store and told the customer service clerk what happened, they said they would look up the owner from the card and call them. If I had been driving I never would have seen the keys.

lucky, I've got dibs! I've been looking for a good bike on Raleigh craig's list for over a month now.... ;)

Commute today was uneventful, 4th or 5th in a row. Friday afternoon's was exciting. The kid's day care called (last week was her first week of day care; both she and us [her parents]) are figuring everything out) to report she had a fever. Since she had her shots the day before this wasn't unexpected, but they wanted me to get her home ASAP. This meant leaving work early and flying home, then driving to get her still dressed in the hi-vis jersey, lycra shorts, and SPD shoes. I'm sure the day care people talked about me after I left, but who cares?

After a weekend of rain (it's always that way, isn't it?), today's weather is beautiful. Took a slightly different route to work this morning, just because. The lights were against me all the way but I had my trackstand working so no foot down.

HardyWeinberg 04-23-07 11:00 AM

Gorgeous ride. New schedule, now I am trailering 2 yr old to her daycare and my wife is taking the 5 yr old to his K. I was hoping to catch up w/ her on bike trail (theoretically my time penalty for going to daycare, dropping Thing 2, doubling back to trail should give her time to drop Thing 1 and start moving forward) but it didn't happen today, so on I went. Weather, traffic, other good stuff in my favor, I tacked on my 9 mile detour, so commute was closer to 18 miles than the minimal 6 this morning, always nice.

Flimflam 04-23-07 12:49 PM

No ride today, much needed rest day. Rode a bunch on the weekend and had an early dentist appointment and need to get my unroadworthy road bike home tonight. Handily all fitted into the one day. I'm hoping for 4/5 this week (CM-Toronto ride this week too, which I hope to take a look at - never been before).

vrkelley 04-23-07 01:35 PM

Change! Spouse decides he's a heart attack waiting to happen. We commute together this AM and I 'drop' him off and ride the last 8mi to work. He loved it!

No more comments about stupid cyclists???? stay tuned!

freemti 04-23-07 02:03 PM

great commute

especially the return trip. The hill that is (was?) my nemisis on the return trip, was a magnitude easier today. I guess its the warmer weather, doing it in <40F kinda sucked (literally!). It could also be that my legs & lungs are steadily improving and the 30 miles I did on Saturday probably helped too.

HardyWeinberg 04-23-07 02:03 PM

My wife wound up bailing on her commute due to sore butt from yesterday's 10 mile dry run. Maybe it will take tomorrow.

Caspar_s 04-23-07 03:41 PM

Got in a 12 km ride Friday, 12 km ride Saturday, and a 25km ride Sunday. Bit sunburnt now... great weather.

Rode in my sandals to work for the first time this year, coming home had a huge headwind - 30km/hr gusting to 50. Also it's recycling day, so all the cardboard and newspapers and blue boxes were getting blown all over the street. Stopped and turned one box of newspaper over to stop more from blowing out.

M_S 04-23-07 08:11 PM

I can't keep my bike inside anymore (long story) so I bought another U-lock. One I take with me and the other lives at school. I figure since it's summer time and people happily (obliviously) leave their bikes locked outside with no more than a cable and a prayer, a bike that has a u-lock on each wheel, both u-locks also covering the frame will not be a thief's first target. One of the U-locks is actually pretty cruddy, but it has no label, so it could be a kryptonite:p The other lock is high quality. Security feels so nice.

Weather is absolutely fabulous.

You must have what we had yesterday. Today it's drizzle. Not that there's anything wrong with that!

Schedule continues to shuffle. 5 yr old is transitioning to no training wheels, so this am, rather than have me kind of guide him as he wobbled to school, we just walked there together. Then I biked to work. Nice, cool, nondescript.

vrkelley 04-24-07 12:23 PM

Yep it's back to the same stuff. Yesterday was super though. I dodged the rain and got here just before the drizzle.

vtjim 04-24-07 12:33 PM

80F yesterday. Nice tailwind. 40s this morning, and the wind had swung around to my back for the ride in. Both commutes were fast & enjoyable.

Skipsjh 04-24-07 12:35 PM

My morning commute this morning was gorgeous. Crisp, in the mid 40's and pretty much calm wind. I'm getting more comfortable biking in roads on the way to work.

ModoVincere 04-24-07 12:46 PM

Got buzzed super close by a truck. Dip Wad driving said truck turned into his delivery driveway right in front of me. I followed and asked the guy to give me more room in the future, and told him how close he came to hitting me. His reply? "You should be on the sidewalk". My reply was to quote the law and then to tell the guy he was an a$$. Not my best moment, but damn. Your a driver for a large (I mean large) company and you don't know the freaking laws of the road?
Anyway, I road around to the front and spoke to the manager, who assured me he would take care of the situation. Just in case he was lying and trying to get rid of me, I reported the truck number to the rental company and also wrote an e-mail to the corporate HQ of the establishment being delivered to.
I did not appreciate this buzzing this morning.

caloso 04-24-07 12:56 PM

It was great. I took the long way in, making a 4 mile commute into a 21 mile commute. The weather was just about perfect, cool enough for arm and knee warmers, but not needing tights or a long sleeved jersey. I had a minivan buzz me uncomfortably closely, but no other issues with drivers. I gave a thumbs-up to the W. Sac. P.D. who had just pulled over a red light runner.

I watched my odometer click over to 1000 miles. I've had it since November. And since this is my commuter, and I rarely ride this bike farther than 25 miles at a time, it says that I'm on this bike for a lot of short trips I guess.

When I walked into the building a co-worker asked how far I rode. When I said "21" he said "Miles!?! That's far even in a car!"

Yeah, I said, but not as much fun.

Itsjustb 04-24-07 01:01 PM

Nice commute today again. Uneventful.

vtjim, I'll miss your avatar! This new one's a little creepy. Small world, Amazon.com recommended that album to me earlier today.
