Ouch! Glad it wasn't worse. Re: Hotsprings, After riding all day there are few things better than sitting in the hotsprings, BUT, do not expect to ride more than a mile or two afterwards. From personal experience, I can tell you cycling is somewhat problematic when your leg muscles have turned into something resembling well cooked noodles!!

Last week was a good one, apart from the driving rain and hail on Weds going home. Oh well, after you're wet, why stop?
Nice rides in the morning, early enough to be cool, and light on the traffic, the afternoons have been a little busier, but all in all, enjoyable.Expecting delivery of the Heron this week, that's going to be fun.

Another glorious morning. :) High 50s and sunny. No wind. I was about to enter the MUP and a rather attractive young woman in roadie dress, riding what looked like a pretty nice road bike, came off the the MUP, made a U-turn in front of me (not dangerously), and then took off in the same direction I was headed.

I had mounted my knobby tires on the Liquid over the weekend for some trail riding, so I decided to see if could keep up with the woman. She was actually one of the fastest riders I've encountered on the MUP. We were cruising along at about 20MPH, and it was making me work with those tires, which were singing loudly. :eek: I imagine she heard me back there. I hung with her for 5 miles until I turned off onto the street close to work. Great ride. Fast!

Very nice commute except for the MARTA bus # 2765 which buzzed the h@ll out of me on North Point Parkway. The bus was less than a foot away from me while I'm doing 25 mph or so on a slight downhill.
WTF is a public transportation vehicle doing buzzing a cyclist? To make matters worse, right after he's past me, he moves over to the left lane which was open the whole time. I think I'm going to call and complain.

Man, almost got hit again today! On Thursday a guy decided to do a rolling stop and hit his brakes just in time, and today a truck took a shortcut behind a building and almost hit me as he was pulling out from the side. Other than that it was great

Here is a tale that makes it clear why when in doubt - ride...

PART 1

This Sunday I had to teach some cycling classes pretty far away (Scarberia, for those who know Toronto). So I took my new beautiful Specialized Tricross and set out. I went through three tranquil ravine paths (without getting lost even!) and hammered through virtually empty Sunday-morning roads catching every green light on the way... Lots of fun. :)

PART 2

As I was teaching, I got a phone call from my mother who said she was coming to pick me up and give me a ride home and then maybe go out together. Since she lives kind of far we don't see each other that often, I agreed to the arrangement. So she came and after my classes were over, we started putting the bike in the car. And you could see that the bike didn't want to be put into the car. The handlebars were just wide enough to make it difficult to push the thing into the trunk. The brakes were a beotch to disconnect for some reason: I just gave up and let the air out of the tires and pull the wheels through the brake pads. And the worst part is that at some point my mother apparently got tired of holding the rear end of the bike and just dropped it!!! Not from a very great height, but still, just dropped it on its carbon seatstay... WTF?? Why can't you lay it down gently? That bike is LIGHT and at that point the wheels were off already which makes it lighter still.

Anyway, eventually we stuffed the poor beast in the car, suffered through miles of boring highway (at least there were no jams) and arrived at my place. And as I was assembling the bike on a grassy patch near my apartment, I managed to step into dog poop with both of my new bike shoes. And I mean REALLY step into a BIG pile. With BOTH shoes. What a ****ing mess!

CONCLUSION

I think it's pretty clear which part out of the two is more fun. ;)

I had a slow ride home on Friday partly due to some alcohol and just wanting to take it easy anyway. Didn't ride all weekend, barring a jaunt on one of those quadricycle things at Centre Island, which was admittedly a lot more work than I had imagined (though it was 80% me-powered while still having another adult and young child on the thing :) - good workout nonetheless).

Slowish ride in today, an annoying headwind and just feeling blah generally but still felt great to ride in. Caught the train crossing again, looks like that's becoming a regular for when I leave the house at a good time.

Another slow ride today complete with bike hogging the only decent parking spot available when I got to work. After a week of moving his bike around to accomodate mine, did he learn? Yes! He chained it in such a way to make it harder to move. Not impossible so I moved it anyway and locked up.

First commute in two weeks (vacation), yay! Nice morning for it, about 70, light wind. Riding the roadie after two weeks of mountain biking took a little adjusting. Riding into the university in the summer is nice, so little traffic.

I'm working in Toronto for a month, and had my first commute in this morning (yes, I brought my bike with me). Have to get used to the traffic patterns, but it was a lot of fun.

Bah. Had to drive again. Huge thunderstorm/tornado warning shake the windows over and over and flood the house kinda storm last night. Was out sweeping out a room with water on the floor at 3AM so no sleep for me until 4am.
Got up at 8 so had to take the car. :-(

My wife realized two blocks from home that she was missing a foundation garment, and told me to head on without her. That was the most exciting thing that happened to me on the ride. Oh, it was sunny for the first time in a week, so that was nice.

it's official: I'm a bloody psychic. Had a dream last night I got a flat tire on my bike. Guess what happens 4/5 of the way to work? I did the 3km walk of shame as I so rarely get flats I don't bother to carry a patch or a spare.

Pinkrobe, wasn't the sun nice today? Last week was so damn gloomy. But I was surprisingly spared from rain for the most part. Got sprinkled on a few times. Thursday I hammered like a time trial all the way home to avoid getting wet. I thought it was going to open up just as I was getting home, it rained for maybe a minute and a half.

I actually had a chilly ride this morning. Basing my clothing on last weeks' weather not the actual temperature, I chose to just wear a short sleeve 'coolmax' type shirt. Little cold on the arms for the first kilometer or so. Seemed to warm up after that.

Uneventful slow commute today. I had an Ultimate Frisbee tournament yesterday against teams whose average age was probably <25 (I'm 38) and my legs/glutes let me know they're NOT happy with me today. Took it nice and slow.

My new Paramount had her virgin ride this morning. Apart from some minor adjustments she handled well.

Nice ride this morning. A little windy. Getting to the point where I'm feeling comfortable with all the hills around here, and my 4mi commute is starting to feel like child's play. I'm going to have to find alternate routes to stretch the ride to at least 10mi one way.

My GF 29" is a workhorse, but it's heavy and with relatively fat tires (38) is kinda slow. I'm thinking of a tri-cross to pick up on those days that I wake up and feel like I want to travel light and go fast.

Had a pretty fast commute today even though I was out riding around for 22+ miles yesterday in the heat. Lots of traffic out this morning and everybody in a hurry as usual, but no big incidents. Gonna be near 100 this afternoon for the ride home.

My rear casset started acting up on my on the way to work today. It would skip from teh 4th gear to 5th and back to 4th, if I shift to 5th gear it does the same to 6th gear. If I shift to 6th gear it's fine which sucks cause 6th gear is starting to get hard and I like to be going 35+kmph to use it with a high enough cadence.

I guess I'll have to drop it off at the LBS tonight and walk home. :(

Great ride home - had a tailwind, amazingly the wind didn't change direction halfway through the day - which is always a nice novelty. Flew home in record time, without really pressing either. Nothing else to note, it was hot as hell, glad I chose to come home in all honesty, may go back out there later.

So just when I'm riding pretty high on my horse, passing every grandma and twelve year-old out there - some roadie has to blow by me and put me back in place. Oh well.. at least he told me to enjoy the rest of my ride.

I know everyone loves summer... but I really really don't. I'm a sweating pig.

Tallk about luck! Decided to believe the forecast, "occasional showers" In true Calgary fashion, "occasional" turns out to be 2/3rds of the afternoon. And I didn't bring a jacket. 15 minutes from home time, the rain stops, the rush hour traffic just ended has dried most of the roads and I get get a nice, just warm enough, ride home. :D

Nah... Mostly different stretches of the Don. :)

What a difference a new bike makes, by the way. I've got my Specialized Tricross Comp and I'm just flying on that thing compared to my venerable beater! I should post a review of that bike prolly...

haven't been doing my usual commute but have been a combination roadie/transportation cyclist as of late. Been putting in lots of miles traveling to friends and family for overnights and visits sometimes getting rides home in cars, sometimes taking the train home, sometimes staying a night or two and then riding home or to see more friends.

tonight I actually did a legitimate "commute" to a teaching gig in Cambridge. Felt great to be back on the commuter after whipping around on the road bike. Was glad to have the "campus pedals" that are spd on one side and flat on the other. I didn't have my cleated shoes handy and was running late so I took off in sandals. I was hoping to use the commute as a "recovery" ride from 3 fast distance rides I did this weekend but I had to haul. got there in great time and had a beautiful evening ride home along the river.

just found out I'll be a New Yorker for 3 months starting in July. so I'll be commuting in Manhattan again and riding the park and doing the GWB rides to Jersey. Suggestions for road rides out of the city are welcome.

Going on my first actual "fun" commute to work. I usually drive (please don't stone me). But probably 3 times a week, I'll ride because of another family member needing a car.

A 13 mile difference, that should be a nice ride :) Kinda bumming that my fixie doesn't have rack mounts though for some panniers.

Yesterday I tried a new commute. It takes me through farmland and woods and fields on dirt paths. Adds about 4 miles onto my ride but it's pretty. The only drawback is I can't slow down or I get swarmed by black flies. :rolleyes: I attached a google image of most of the alternative route.

This morning's ride was nice too. Temps in the low 60s. Sunny. Bit of a headwind but not bad. I did a little dirt trail riding through some woods. The Michelin Transworlds are nice for going fast, but it's fun to have the knobbies on so I can go off into the dirt too.

For the first time in a couple weeks I had to ride in some rain. I hopped on the World Tourist w/ fenders and rode slowly in to work.

My commute was lovely!!! Nothing like 80F and humid in the early am to get that sweat working! 1/2 mile up the street and I'm looking like a Gaterade commercial :) Supposed to get some good storms for the ride home today - GOOD! :)
