25, light wind, some flurries. Great way to wake up in the morning and to top it off, no annoying drivers:)

I've got my camera in my bag, just waiting for the time when it snows heavily so I can get some snapshots :D

Relaxer 12-04-06 08:04 AM

Ahhh, finally we're in winter. 31 degrees this morning, with winds in the 20s-30s. NOW I know what to wear. Fun ride, and the # of commuters on the road is definitely falling. Nice to be the first (and only?) bike on the rack.

GTcommuter 12-04-06 08:33 AM

Brrr...cold this morning. I had to carry a jacket to work so the messenger bag was bulging at the seams. Heard an odd clicking noise so I think it's time to do some overhaul maintenance.

DataJunkie 12-04-06 08:35 AM

Egads! Left early and arrived late to the light rail.
15F and the trail I use was covered in hard packed snow and ice. I managed to only fall once.
It was taking such a large amount of effort and concentration that my stomach became upset. Had to hightail it to a port-a-potti. Nothing like using one of them at 15F. ugh The fastest restroom break ever!
Anyhow, I really wish there were actual street alternatives to that portion of my commute. A majority of the streets are clear. oh well....
It should warm up to the mid to upper 40s today. That should help the trails some.

Christmas is here. I know because traffic sucked big time the whole way to work. Jam packed and barely moving. My avg. speed was in the single digits and I still beat traffic in. I hope the ride home is smoother.

idcruiserman 12-04-06 09:12 AM

15F today and minimal wind. Nice weather for a ride, but my camelback hose froze, and I think I had some ice in the rear derailleur or something. It was ghost shifting like crazy just before I got to work. I stopped and adjusted it and bent it all over the place. Seemed to fix the problem. Don't replace shifters and cables the day before riding without testing and readjusting :).

Third commute in to work. The 20 miles was a bit easier this morning - still would have been glad to be done at around the 14 mile mark or so, but the subsequent 6 miles weren't too bad. Temperature was in the high 30s/low 40s. I Dug out the Wynnster fleece jacket I bought in England back in the last century (the time kind, not the distance kind) and had a much less sweaty ride in. Also made a new flash flag this weekend to replace the one that fell off on the way in on Friday. It's amazing how much difference one of those things makes! Stick a little orange flag on the bike's left flank and all of a sudden I'm getting 3 more feet of clearance from passing cars. Instead of the dowel I used on the first flag, I used some fiberglass spars from an old kite - they're much more fun because they flex a lot and make the flag wave up and down. Great attention getter. Now I just need to track down some SOLAS tape to make it reflective. I even have a spare flag again, since I found my original flash flag on my way in to work this morning, right where it fell off three days ago.

Rode in today with the slippy pedal/crank issue, figured I'd nurse it enough to get it to the bike store. Ride was great, really slow (and somewhat careful) due to the problem and a nice dusting of snow we had. -4C when I left (finally, after The Big Glove Hunt(tm) ;))

Noticed a lot this morning. Firstly, I had to stop about 5 mins in to put my woolly hat (toque!) on over my skullcap, my head was starting to freeze. Also, because I wasn't able to go too fast (or put in a lot of effort starting off) - I wasn't nearly as sweaty, tired or anything. I was also riding a lot more WITH other cyclists, as they kept a lower riding speed generally.

It took me about 38 mins to get to the bikestore, which is around the same distance it is to work (according to routeslip), so that's not bad. (Modified route, took Church only to Carlton then across to Beverley and down there to Phoebe, then a little turn onto John where Urbane cyclist is).

Dude at the bikestore found the problem quickly, turns out my crank has a pin that the chainring connects to, this pin no longer exists on my bike (there was a specific type of crank he mentioned, but I don't remember). I cancelled the cassette and gear upgrades, as he convinced me that it really wouldn't make too much difference right now. Instead, got him to install new rear pads and get a couple of new cables installed on the brakes - the rear cable has been sticking for a while now, truthfully. Along with that and a 'space bar' (a handlebar extender mount thing) - my bike should be all ship-shop ready for 5 on the way home. I'm excited, it's the very first time I've ever had a bike repaired and worked on at a bike store, and I'm looking forward to it being ready to ride, and hopefully with a little more spring in its step :)

Forgive me for I have sinned. I drove to work today even though weather was doable (mid-20s). Woke up late and pussed-out. I feel cheap :o

Two Buck Chuck 12-04-06 10:21 AM

Brrrrr. Temp was around 34F, but 25+ mph winds put the windchill at 21F. The ride over the Potomac was brutal for this South Carolina native! I rode in with a neighbor, who got bad info from the weatherman and was riding in shorts!

HardyWeinberg 12-04-06 10:27 AM

Back on the 26x1.5s from the 2+ knobbies. I'm thinking more and more about those Big Apples.

Well, I biked in today, now to start my 8 hr roundtrip drive to a meeting.

The wind made it really cold, esp riding INTO the wind. I was warm once I got going, got pushed around a little by the wind. Unfortunately, I wore the wrong gloves. I know better by now, but I went too light on the gloves, and my fingers suffered for it. Bad. Still a little stiff, and I have been at the office for 4 hrs.

Nice to have the cold, know it will be cold, weather here. And as always, no one at work understands, why I rode today.

I'm getting a lot of that today too. "You're so crazy!" What I didn't tell them is that I did 40 miles late last night at Haines Point in substantially colder weather than this morning. They probably wouldn't believe me anyhow.

bikedaddy 12-04-06 11:08 AM

A warm 18F this morning with bright sun. Felt nice compared to my past few rides. A fox ran along me for about 50 yards and then just stopped and stared as I went by. I wonder if he would do that with a cager ... probably not.

caloso 12-04-06 11:18 AM

I was really tired this morning. I was putting up Xmas lights yesterday and wrestling with an extension ladder is surprisingly hard work. (Plus, I have no upper body strength anymore: I'm a cyclist!)

Other than that, not too notable except that I wore a tie for the first time in months on the commute. No big deal, but perhaps drivers think "Hey, that guy is going to work, just like me..." (But probably not. People are pretty self-absorbed.)

pinkrobe 12-04-06 12:01 PM

Warm like toast today - maybe only -2C. It's supposed to be up around +13 by Thursday, so hopefully some of the slush will melt away...

thdave 12-04-06 12:07 PM

There was a pretty dusting of snow everywhere this morning, which added to the commute. Ice is forming at some ponds I pass, which are next to the river my MUP follows. It is great seeing the sunrise on the ponds and on the snow. I loved it.

Went into a headwind the whole way, so I had one of my slowest days yet. However, it should make it a simple glide home.

chipcom 12-04-06 12:08 PM

13F this morning - first time it's gotten below the mid 20s this fall - and it's been in the 40s-60s the last couple of weeks. Dayum, I hate when Indian Summer gives way to old man Winter virtually overnight!

rule 12-04-06 12:26 PM

Yeah, mid teens for the ride in here. That was a spectacular moon this morning; it lit up everything and even made the frost look extra cool. I had my first run in with a surprise bit of black ice. I won, but just barely. :D

Ouch! Quite a pleasant ride this morning, but it certainly would not have been so with shorts. I hope he made it OK. I'm certainly now gettting in a mood to put up decorations not that we seeing some almost winter-like weather. I'm hoping these falling temperatures mean an early snow and even a White Christmas.

Paul;

habernac 12-04-06 03:39 PM

I can't believe they've finally plowed the pathway all the way north to my place! No more dicing it out with the cagers on the road, yippee!! Beautiful day today, -2C this morning, it'll be well above zero when I head home.

Randomus 12-04-06 04:22 PM

Today's commute was an absolutely warm one which featured a 64F temperature. :)

DataJunkie 12-04-06 07:31 PM

I do not know what is with me this season. I have absolutely no desire to ride on snow and ice. Maybe it has to do with my easy mass transit alternative or the fact that I have done it before. Just no desire.
I suppose it could improve if I had more appropriate equipment. 700X28 are pointless in snow.
Anyhow, my morning commute was evil and while the afternoon was better, I was still having issues with a crappy trail. Going to take a break tomorrow and let everything finish defrosting. Don't want to turn into a fair weather commuter, the possible end result of me getting annoyed. Wed it is!
Time to break out the stationary bike. No time to hit the gym tomorrow.

tomg 12-04-06 07:54 PM

cold, into the wind (33degF, 15 notts) going in. traffic was light, lights working 100%. got to work 30 mins early (froze at work AM meet, heater down - new office - 58degF )
ride home was colder, but wind to left back, pushing! traffic at 4PM though was over/all "OK", but there were several A/H who "had" to get infront, close passing, cut off, honk repeatedly as i held a lane (road sholder's torn-up).
i think the training sessions are starting in the new job sight/area.
i hope they (people in autos) are as train-able as those on my last commute route.

JohnnyOTS 12-04-06 07:55 PM

66 degrees on the commute home - shoved the fleece jacket in the panniers and rode home in a T-Shirt and shorts. Made the 20 miles in 1 hour and 34 minutes - my best time yet. It's a good thing my Kona Jake can't talk. I suspect it would like to go considerably faster than 13mph average. Even more amazing, I actually saw 7 other people riding bicycles in the course of the trip! Le Gasp! A new record! One was even wearing...wait for it...a HELMET! And even more astonishing, a REFLECTIVE VEST! I won the "geekiest thing on the road" contest though, with my glasses mirror, helmet, reflective ankle bands, flash flag, and two PB Superflashes. I feel like Macaulay Culkin in The Pagemaster. (Before the animated bits.) Only older. And fatter. >.>
