I started doing that in my early 20's right after college. I still do it to this day. Must be cuz I don't go to bed before midnight.

How'd you do?

Speaking of 2 ton trucks, my co-worker said he might take his bike out for a ride tonight. Of course, this means putting the bike rack on his H3 and driving it 5 miles to the park, then riding around on the bike path. I reminded him that it's an H3 and he can just toss it in the trunk w/o taking the wheel off and doesn't need the rack. Then I told him while the 5 mi. trip to the park might be a walk in the park for me, he should definitely drive his bike there and ride it a few nights a week for a couple weeks til his butt gets used to the saddle again and he builds up his legs. Then he can leave the truck at home, save himself $3 in gas and ride to the park.

As for my commute, I picked up my new Soma bullhorns and some bar tape that matches my Brooks. Then I took the long way home just because. :)

hot and muggy as usual for DC summers, both in the morning and in the afternoon.

slow and leisurely was the name of the game in the morning, aside from a couple of sprints on the major road coming out of my neighborhood and on campus. took the path route in today. stopped to chat with a couple dogwalkers on the path who were walking like five dogs including two huskies (my favorite breed of dog). one of their dogs was off the leash for whatever reason and ran into the woods... they had to go in after him/her. other than that nothing out of the ordinary on the ride in.

the ride back was to my folks house. quick stop by the bank but other than that a fast ride back in order to beat the possible thundershowers that I was warned about but that never actually materialized. good ride overall today.

Very humid this morning, upper 60s. Came in dripping wet. How long 'til September?

But I saw another commuter for the first time!! He had a road bike and a backpack, I have a hybrid/commuter with a rack & bag. He came out of nowhere and blew by me on a climb. I thought he was way stronger than me, but I was able to hang about 30 yards behind him on my longest hill.

He turned near the top of the hill into the hospital, but it was nice to have company for a mile or so.

Nice ride home last night. It was hot and humid, but not too bad. I guess I'm getting accustomed to the 70F dew points. Had an unusual, potentially dangerous, thing happen to me: Came upon some road construction where only one lane was open and two flagmen with stop/slow signs on either end to alternate traffic through. The guy on my end had the "slow" sign up, so I rode through. As I got near the other end, that guy also had his "slow" sign up, so here I am riding 20 mph heading straight into a line of oncoming traffic. Luckily all I had to do was ride between the orange barrels and into the closed lane while the traffic passed. Had there been nowhere for me to go it could have been a bad scene though. All I could do was shake my head at flagman #2 as I rode by, though I suspect it was actually flagman #1 who screwed up.
Ride in this AM was uneventful, thought pretty sweaty.

So yesterday afternoon, I decided to wait out the fast moving storms, and I left work at 4:30PM. Halfway home, the clouds broke, and I had sun the rest of the way home!

This morning was a bit overcast, and some knucklehead in a van decided that six inches was enough room for him to pass me, in lane, on a four lane undivided road. I was a good meter and a half from the curb, and everyone else was giving me a wide berth. Maybe this guy can't ride and was jealous.

Ride in this morning

This morning's ride ended up being a warm, drizzly morning......wonderful! :)

My wife called me at work once she realized I had ridden in (I leave before she wakes up) and asked "Didn't you check the weather this morning?", to which I answered "Yes I did!", then she asked "...Are you crazy?..." to which I answered "...Yep!:) "

The weather called for 80% chance of rain, which I saw as a 20% chance of it not raining. I guess I'm an optimist.

The fenders worked just like they're supposed to, and I wasn't all that much wetter than I normally am from sweat. I kinda like riding in the rain.

Decent but slow ride this morning. Rode 3.5 hours Sunday so I took a rest day Monday. I'd been meticulously tracking my calories to help drop a few pounds and make sure I don't burn out from under eating. Decided it was no big deal for the rest day and I guess I severly under-ate because the ride home last night was miserable: back cramps, no power, couldn't spin above 95 RPM, lack of focus. Trying for some active recovery now because I don't like taking too many days off.

jyossarian 07-12-06 07:18 AM

Woke up to the sound of jackhammers 10 ft. from my window. Ahhh...whatever. Walked over to my computer and logged in and was "at work". Waiting for my bike to be delivered today so no commute for me.

vtjim 07-12-06 07:22 AM

Nice ride. Cool air, but still humid enough that I started to get sticky when I stopped riding.

I caught a couple of nice-looking (from behind at least) women on road bikes, clipless, lycra, and backpacks. They seemed to be slowing down as time went on so eventually I just passed 'em. We exchanged greetings and away I went.

I've decided the toe clips I put on my Peugeot are responsible for a 2 to 3 minute reduction in commute time over 6.4 miles. Not too bad. I do notice some different thigh muscles feeling "used" after the ride.

I saw another bunny, too. It was on my left, in the grass, and decided to hop (fast) across the MUP right in front of me. What is it with little animal brains? "I'll evade the predator by running into its path." Hmm... A squirrel did the same thing to me yesterday.

I saw one too, but this one just hopped out of my path. Maybe he's trying to throw you a curveball.

HardyWeinberg 07-12-06 07:56 AM

I stared down a (live) deer on the way home yesterday. Or he stared me down, I stopped pedalling anyway until he figured his best route off the path.

Itsjustb 07-12-06 08:14 AM

New one this morning. 45+ mph road, two lanes each direction and a center turn lane. I'm taking the entire right lane as usual, approaching my right turn.

Black pickup pulls into my lane from the left lane--not REAL close, but close--and pulls almost all the way to the right, blocking me. I sigh. I stop, then start walking the bike past him in the narrow gap he has left me.

As I walk alongisde him, he rolls down the passenger window and says , "Hey." I keep looking straight ahead and said, "Hi." He says "Hey" again, I say "Hi" again and keep moving past him.

I have no idea what he wanted to say--maybe it was to ask directions!--but I got this feeling that it wasn't anything I wanted/needed to hear.

I made my turn at the light. He passed me on that road, but by that point I was probably doing 15+ and he was doing over 45.

diff_lock2 07-12-06 08:44 AM

cold and humid

MyPC8MyBrain 07-12-06 08:51 AM

Got rained on last night on the way home... no jacket with me so I just had to "Man Up" and ride. Wasn't really that bad. Cool and refreshing is my justification I suppose.

Nothing special on the ride in this morning. Just your typical cool temps, bright sunshine, blue sky, bird chirping, bunny hopping, friendly chatting ride in to work. :)

Parking has become a real issue here. Now all management and supporting staff for the center have to park in a lot that is 1/4 mile away. Everybody is whining about the walk. I park 3 feet from the front door [nanny nanny boo boo] Some are talking about hauling bikes then riding the 1/4 mile to the office. I guess it's a start anyways.

HardyWeinberg 07-12-06 02:20 PM

50s and raining this morning. As always, it had stopped by the time I got in.

Last time it dropped from 80s to 50s I was pretty cold, but not so much today. Last time was very hot at night, too, while recently it's been going down to 40s even though it was up in the 90s during the day this past weekend, so maybe I've been retaining some physiological temp memory or something.

robtown 07-12-06 05:35 PM

Two bunnies and a ground hog in the first mile on the way home. Storms came through in the hour before I left. From mile 2 through 8 was on leading edge of storm where it was cooler and large drops were coming down enough to keep me damp. Broke out for last 4 miles. Fast speed - 18mph ave - wonderful compared to mtb I rode yesterday. I had dropped off my car for repair so had to do a RT. On those days I ride much cheaper MTB and lock up outside.

caloso 07-12-06 05:44 PM

I'm a little annoyed. There's a group of riders in my building who are going out for a ride this afternoon but for some reason they changed the time to 4pm and I can't sneak out early. So, I'll just ride by myself and think about how I would have made them suffer like dogs.

Anyway, the ride in today was pleasant. I actually left the house reasonably on time.

xB_Nutt 07-12-06 06:22 PM

Hot and humid on the way in...soaking wet from a deluge of rain on the way home. It was actually quite nice to be cooled off by the rain. I was a little worried about being seen though. Ironically I had just installed fenders, lights and "waterproofed" my rack bags this past weekend...

o-dog 07-12-06 08:31 PM

still hot and muggy, as always. moderately paced ride in from my parents house. good ride, nothing out of the ordinary. felt a few raindrops as I was getting onto campus so I parked at the only covered rack on campus then as I was walking to my class the sun came out.

left a full 3 hours later than usual since I was working on a presentation that I have to do tomorrow. decided to ride up and down the PB Trail then take it back home. hammered all the way there on campus. the ride up and down the trail was good, it was in better condition today (up until the area between Tornado Alley and the Cherry Hill Road intersection which is still tore up). the rain started coming down as I was turning off the trail at the golf course and soon turned into a torrential downpour of virtually horizontal rain. and me without my raingear. I actually turned off the road, got under a nearby awning and waited it out... fortunately the really heavy rain subsided fairly quickly. still, I got thoroughly soaked and my rain pants still haven't seen any actual rain use. other than the little shower, it was still a great ride.

Grocery day, always a sweat-fest. Trailer, cooler full of ice, all told about 85#. Mid 90º's and humidity in the 50% range, feel like I've been swimming all day.
Chain fell off right as I pulled into the driveway, it's stretched a bit in it's 3K lifetime. Un-nutting the rear hub and sliding it back a touch, put things right.

Hot, humid, hotter, and more humidity today. I made a big mistake by not putting some proper riding clothes in my bag. Rode in this morning in office clothes, luckily it was moderate early. But this afternoon I almost rode home in my boxers. So I treated myself to a DQ Blizzard, which tasted good but didn't help the exercising much.

scottmorrison99 07-12-06 09:51 PM

Nice ride both ways. I have to go in an hour early tomorrow, my first dark morning ride in a while. I hope tomorrow is warmer than today was.
