Great ride in. I am a big wimp and hate exercise, but for some reason the whole pedaling thing doesn't seem as awful. I was working pretty hard this morning just because, and I liked it. :)

There was a power crew parked blocking the bike lane and right lane of a busy 4-lane road that I use. I hit it when there were a ton of cars coming up and merging at 50+ into the one open lane, and thought I'd be stuck for a bit, but one of the crew guys waved me up through along the curb. Maybe he noticed my orange vest and saw me as one of them. :roflmao:

Cool and drizzly. And long! Trailered Thing 2 to daycare, detoured back to MUP, did run into wife this time, went w/ her til we got to a turnoff I seldom take, took that, stopped for blood draw at clinic, detoured to McDonald's (fasting for blood draw) rejected from drive through! Blew them off, continued on to work, will eat lunch apples for breakfast instead of egg mcmuffins. Finally, got a horn honk and big thumbs down gesture from random old guy in beat up old sh*tbox car while I was standing minding my own business at a red light (out of everybody's way). The McD's and old guy things were just entertainment though, not stress. It is a nice day at least.

Yesterday I was stuck on MUP when deer and I stopped to stare each other down. I didn't want to pass too close and have him puncture my chest w/ razor-sharp forehoofs, so I waited him out, and he finally jumped onto the freeway offramp, hopped across into homeless people camp.

Did some online job hunting this afternoon and found that the local college is hiring support staff at *considerably* higher pay than I am currently making. It would cut my commute in half, but that means more time for recreational riding. Oh, and studying. Since I'm officially leaving here because of going back to school, not because it's a snake pit.

Good Job!!! Ya HOO!!!

I also have a milestone; aprox 1555 miles for the calender year, bike computor shows 1555 b'cause new bike for x-mas and started riding it mid Jan. when I had adjusted some components for personal taste. Any way I have been riding for about a year on this commute so I can guess that the 365 day totall would be about 3000 miles. Ya HOO!

Nice ride this morning. I love to ride early in the morning before all the cagers hit the road. The commute back home this afternoon was not as good for the same reason: cagers. >:-(

Tude 06-28-07 06:57 PM

Nice ride both ways, took the roadbike out for a 20 miler too. Good 15 mph headwind but lovin the tailwind back.

Kotts 06-29-07 06:30 AM

Nice ride in. A little rain, but not enough to really be any wetter than my own sweat gets me. Felt good to be "back in the saddle". (First real riding in a week, work/home schedule too crazy.)

Going to check out a bike co-op I just found out about on the way home.

On one of my rides home (passing a local lake adjacent to the MUP), I almost collided with a Canada Goose who was coming in for a landing on the lake. I was checking out a pedal creak, and when I looked up again, he (she? I dunno, didn't have time to check) was right at eye level about 5 feet away.

I ducked down flat, (s)he veered or did something, I felt a wingtip brush my back, and I looked over my shoulder to witness a somewhat-embarassing-but-still-succesfull landing on the lake.

We parted company on good terms, but I'm still amused at how cartoon-ish a startled goose can look. I imagine that the goose probably feels the same way about people.

Excellent commute. Today was the kickoff for Bike Fridays in Mississauga. It was nice to commute with about 100 other cyclists.

mikepop 06-29-07 07:16 AM

Fantastic commute today! The heatwave broke last night, so it was a sunny and breezy 60 degrees. Left early and took the scenic route around Back Cove. A nice change from a week of taking it slow to keep from overheating.

JR97 06-29-07 08:30 AM

Uphill and against the wind. But it was nice.

themickeyd 06-29-07 08:53 AM

Better than the ride home last night (managed to step in an ant nest while changing a flat) mostly sunny and in the mid 50's.

joeyfrench 06-29-07 09:02 AM

Oh my goodness, rode in at 9:30, as opposed to my regular 6:00-6:30 commuter time, and man did I feel it. In South Carolina, it gets to like 90 degrees by 10:00 somedays, and this morning was horrible, I sweat like twice as much as usual, and had a headwind. Just got a new computer though, and my average was 12 mph, which was okay I guess, since I have no frame of reference yet.

Total slack mode this morning.
Got up around 8 instead of 6:00.
Rode a few extra miles on the way in.
Arrived about an hour later than I usually arrive.
What the heck it's Friday.

On a side note, i did click in a couple extra gears just to make climbing the hill a bit more of a challenge. Climbing mountain passes all last week seemed to put some more muscle on the bone. :)

Buglady 06-29-07 09:08 AM

May I just say that I hate you people who get to choose your start time.... ?

If I'm not here at 8:30 there's hell to pay...

mjw16 06-29-07 09:16 AM

Legs felt like cement today, absolutely exhausted-still feel that way. Plus, it was super humid. I got to work about 15 min. late and completely soaked. Hopefully the ride home will be a little better.

pinkrobe 06-29-07 09:22 AM

Hey Buglady! You were sort of in a dream I had the other night. The dream wasn't about you - I was riding my bike with my wife along a winding road with a beach, and we passed by a lady in a ladybug costume riding a bike. I waved and said "Hi Buglady!" and the ladybug replied "Hi Pinkrobe!" Then I turned to my wife and said "That's Buglady from Bikeforums". My wife said "Uh-huh", and rolled her eyes [her beautiful eyes].

Anyway, I got a little damp riding in today. Worse, my gloves were still moist from mtn biking last night. Ewwwwww!

timthorn 06-29-07 09:55 AM

Wonderful Central Texas morning, high ceiling with a cool cross breeze. The morning's pleasantries allowed the cows to graze closer to the road to the point where the gate guards were standing next to the cows.

Buglady 06-29-07 09:56 AM

 I am honoured! (I think...)

I don't own a ladybug costume, although I WAS severely disappointed that the ladybug-patterned helmet at the bike shop was a child's size :D

caloso 06-29-07 10:01 AM

It was nice. Today was the first ride in a few days. I'd been taking the mornings off to take the twins to swim lessons and then dropping them at daycare in the minivan. I was feeling a little heavy for the first part, but things got easier as the rust rubbed off.

luckysnafu 06-29-07 10:27 AM

Another warm and sticky commute this morning. As I was leaving my apartment there was a police car and a crime scene SUV checking some cars in the parking lot, I am guessing they were broken into last night. I gotta remember to check my car when I get home since I haven't driven it in a week and a half and the car cover is still on it.

I am hoping to avoid any rain/storms this afternoon as I have been all week.

Roadmunky 06-29-07 11:22 AM

could't be better

Left today at 7:50a.m. it was already at 78'. Thats Cali for you. Roads were fairly empty. I love the summer, everyone leaves.

I was just about to comment to his, also. I feel so lucky, like beyond blessed, that I have a job with flexible hours. We can also take our PTO in 15-min increments, and as long as the flow of work is moving along they're okay with us taking unpaid time off if we don't have PTO. Days I ride in I can come in at 6 am if I choose, and stay until 7 pm, then come in at 9:30 another day and leave at 3:30. Plus, we're so busy they're allowing overtime right now so if I do choose to stay around later to avoid the heat, I get paid a lot more. :)

It sure makes biking in a lot easier, knowing that I'm not necessarily expected to be here at a particular time.

I had a great ride in again this morning (4th day this week!)... although for the first time, people pulled up on my side and then turned the same way I was turning, rather than being patient and waiting behind me. Two of them! Neither of them had their blinkers on, either. Poopyhaids.

Oh! And my ride home last night (about 110*) was my fastest yet--it's only about my 10th commute. I just felt really good, didn't mind pedaling hard and pushing it a little.

workingbike 06-29-07 12:07 PM

It was.... not warm.. this morning, but definitely a bit humid and it has got more threatening as the day progresses. We almost certainly are going to have a thunderstorm, probably a gully washer. Timing for the trip home could be interesting. Got rained on a bit last night going home, nothing really enough to worry about, but I was in no hurry so sat under a tree for a while and smelled the air. Not dealing with rush hour car idiocies makes commuting much more pleasant. If i don't have new job by next week, think I'll plan to get up early and ride around the light industrial areas sniffing out the free Stampede Breakfasts. :D Free food to stretch the budget and its a good way to bring up the question "You guys hiring?"

HardyWeinberg 06-29-07 02:02 PM

Wet! Last night was even wetter!!! This is rain like... real rain! Between the rainy winter, and yesterday and today, I am wondering where all my peaceful drizzly mist went!

(but it's a *warm* wet at least!)

DataJunkie 06-29-07 02:10 PM

Well.. finally....one ride to go. First time ever I have ridden in and back each day. So the mileage for this week will sit at 285 miles. Yay!
This is despite the fact that I have been having issues with my eyes. Could barely see for a day or two. It seems that I may have scratched one. Ah well. I hope to be in my contacts in the next day or two. Otherwise I will need to visit my dr.

That's pretty funny. I scared a cow a few months ago, which really surprised me, I figured they were used to all kinds of distractions as they stick their head out the fence to graze, but maybe a biker was a new one on her...

caloso 06-29-07 05:15 PM

Posted pix of my commute in this thread, if you'd care to take a look.

jorpe 06-29-07 07:02 PM

Awesome, I got hit by another cyclist on 11th and Speer today... The guy came across the intersection flying and couldnt stop. He hit my left leg and bounced off. It put a nice gash on my left hand through my glove, but that was it. Nice guy.

cruzMOKS 06-29-07 08:20 PM

I had an interesting commute Thursday. I rode in a light rain. Changed into my work clothes and for lunch changed back to commute clothes and rode to a different work site for lunch. This time it was really raining. I dried off and changed back to my work clothes. For the ride home I wore my work clothes. The rain had slowed down to a light drizzle. All told I rode about 16.5 miles.

georgiaboy 06-30-07 04:06 PM

I imagine not may commute on the weekend. I work on the weekend, so I do. Thursday evening I was feeling a little under the weather. I had a slight fever and felt clammy. When this morning came I was debating if I should ride or not. Was not feeling sick but was not a full energy. I rode anyway. Did not need to be at work until 1200noon but I left my place at 1000am because I like to ride awhile. By the time I finished my ride I felt great. Riding the bike is great for me.
