My chain fell off AGAIN today on the way home.. this time it fell off while I was spinning up through a tunnel... I coasted about 100 feet from the top ... sucked... put the chain back on, greasy fingers... waited for cars to go by and there was NO shoulder, I was standing on a drain cover....
Then I get honked at by a truck when I finally start to mash my way back out... =( I have to figure out a way to prevent the chain from falling off... |
SWEET!
a-b, b-a were eventless, a few honks from people in cages who had not seen me for awile (good to be missed!) and the winds, sun, temps were all with me. farphignugeanne (sp) and scarry! a good day! spin safe! |
bike path was ice and slush for sections and lots of puddles the deepest being about 8-10" of freezing water. I plowed through, over and on it with my neoprene shoe covers and fenders managing to get to work dry as could be.
Not much wind the last couple of days, which meant I could make a little better time than usual. the warmer weather- 40F! was a welcome respite from the cold. |
45 F. Warmest yet. Got foggy through Kings Mountain then cleared up in Shelby.
Plus ... First time this whole winter that I passed another cyclist coming the other way in Crowders Mountain. Heck, it was the steepest part of the road (16-18% grades on this road) and he was coming down the other side. He was well lit. Bravo. Got my fastest average yet this year trying to get through the fog and thinking about my next race in March. 42.70 miles @ 18.6mph. I love seeing improvements. But, my boney @$$ needs a new seat. I'm getting real uncomfortable on the one I have. Lost 20 pounds and my butt bones are hurting. Meh, take the good with the bad, I guess. |
My wife's stomach was bothering her, so she told me to leave without her. So, I left on time, didn't wait at any of the usual waiting spots and arrived at work a full 6 minutes early. I'll be happy when she's bacck on her road bike...

There was about 1.5" of slushy snow on the MUP in Redmond, and it got deeper going north to Woodinville. Finally ended with around 2.5 - 3" on the ground, mostly fluff over slush by the time I left the MUP. The roadways were just slush: Narsty, gritty, blackish-grey slush for the last mile and a half of my commute. I got to work and checked my computer... 9.7 mph average. Not bad for 6 miles breaking track in the slush/snow on the MUP and schlepping through the mire of filth on the roadway. Not bad considering my fender wells were packed with slush by the time I got to work, and I'm sure that didn't help my efficiency at all.
I saw 3 other commuters today. Two riding, and one pushing. (I asked, and he said he was OK but it was just too much snow for him.) |
Saw a couple of other commuters this morning. A woman on a step-through Breezer, a guy on another Breezer, and a sidewalk riding guy on a full-suspension mountain bike. It looked like the kind of bike you'd take up on a ski lift.

Good coming in this morning. Clear and around -4C
Late this morning a train derailed which will cut into my commute and a big storm is just starting...yikes! Well if I can get to my bike at the train station I should have a wild snow-flakey ride home...hee..hee. |
Thunder, lightening, threats of tornadoes, and an 8am business meeting kept me off the bike this morning. Driving actually worked out today because I got to drive some of the higher-ups to breakfast and put in some good networking time. But I still hated it and will be biking twice as far tomorrow.
|
Sick kid and wife delayed my commute so I missed all the snow, it was gone when I finally got on the road a little after 11. So, typical wintery day, low 40s and cloudy. Annoying driver blocked x-walk connecting MUP to traffic island while waiting to merge.

Dear pansy-ass teenage cager,
It was real cute how you gave me the finger, just above dash level as you drove away. You gave me 3 feet, didn't honk, yell or anything. You clearly don't know how to intimidate a cyclist. You even had 2 teenage friends in the car who didn't participate at all, unless gawking with your eyes wide open and jaw-dropped is a new school thing I'm too old to understand. Sincerely, Wulfy p.s. see you tomorrow, and the next day and the next day and the next day.... |
nice ride in. nice ride home. :)
|
Got to work early, someone showed up with a key after about 20 minutes. My that time I had made tracks all over the yard and totally covered my brakes and derailers in snow. But it was fun to donk around!
|
Beautiful ride in this morning, feels like a Friday. The traffic was really light for some reason with no bad encounters. I'm going exploring this evening down to Castleberry Hill so will probably skip out of work early and take a long ride.
|
Uneventful ride in, except that my wife almost got taken out by a silver Acura RSX that barely missed me just seconds later. The funny thing is, we actually got ahead of said ******bag in just a few blocks. I was going to go over and bust a window, but I'm really a mellow guy at heart.

I had a great commute this morning (60% cycle path). Lovely sunny weather for a change.
I passed a fellow commuter who've I've seen all through the winter very morning. I'm glad it's nearly spring now though. btw, I've had two punctures this week. |
40F, sunny, breezy. Great ride in. Weather gear consisted of windbreaker, ear warmer, cotton gloves, & sunglasses. Wore shorts. Working on the tan, baby!
|
Low 20s with a light snow the entire ride. Nice and pretty.
I had my 3rd low speed ice related fall. You would think I would learn after #2.... no... not I. I was riding through Washington Park one handed eating a sandwich. Low and behold the light dusting of snow had hidden a sheet of ice. Tipped over at maybe 8mph. :p Nothing is injured except my ego. Besides that fall everything went well until I hit the southern suburbs. What a mess. Here I am hauling arse down a hill and notice up ahead that my lane (rightmost of 3) is disappearing under ice and snow. I then slow down to a crawl and notice that all the other lanes are disappearing. Consequently I walked my bike off the street onto a path and walked 2 blocks until it cleared up. Another path I use going up a steep hill was a solid sheet of ice as well. Combo walked and rode the bike slowly up the hill. Only 15 minutes late. :) |
Bright, sunny, cold, and windy. A block away from my house I realized I hadn't put anything on my head under my helmet and my hair was still moist from the shower so I was a little chilly. But it's only a 20 minute ride so I survived.
Quiet at work today so I may slip out for a long lunch ride. |
Snow:mad: Lots of it!
|
Yesterday we had the worst snowstorm in years. Traffic was at a standstill and there was too much snow to ride the bike. I had to wheel it to the subway and take the subway home (after waiting downtown for a couple of hours to let the rush hour pass... I had a couple of good martinis, so I'm not complaning :)). Today the roads are flooded! Wettest feet I ever had on a bike!
And oh, you won't believe what I saw yesterday (before the snow hit) - a commuter on a unicycle! He was dressed like a commuter, carried a briefcase and was riding a uni. How cool is that? :) |
I got up too late to ride in this morning. So drove home for lunch and rode back. The ride home was hard into 35 mph winds. But I felt good afterwards.
|
Had a great commute to work today so much so that i got carried away and just rode stright past work
Ended up doing 80 plus k up huge hills what an awesome day see the pics at www.craig*****.info |
