A very mellow ride in. I left early to get to work sooner than normal, but lollygagged enough that I arrived at just about the same time I always do.

HardyWeinberg 03-12-07 10:15 AM

Pretty smooth. Darker than usual, of course.

My first ride in over six weeks! It is nice not to have to ride Metro with hundreds of my closest friends sharing a few square feet of space. Traffic is really light in the inner 'burbs at 6:45am.

ModoVincere 03-12-07 11:12 AM

Nice ride in. I rode my latest find. Its a Puch "Path Finder" I picked up on Saturday for $16 US. Old 10 spd made of Hi-tn steel with 27*1 1/4 wheels, center pull dia-compe brakes, and rides like butter.
It didn't make my ride any faster but I sure enjoyed the ride.

I work an overnight shift, and the commute home was difficult, probably due to being tired.

It is so nice to have a 12 mile ride done before the day starts.

Congratulations! I only gets easier! :D That's a good distance, too, to get a decent workout. Keep it going!

I've never been able to figure this out, but the time change always seems to increase car traffic on my route by a factor of ten. Streets where I might normally see one or two cars suddenly have a line of five or six. Not surprisingly the fact that's it's darker out as well makes some cagers even dumber than usual, like the guy in the F-150 who nearly ran me over as he went to park for his morning Starbucks. He got a mighty middle finger and a hearty oath thrown in his direction and looked confused. On the way home heading up steep Texas St. I found an out-of-shape woman very slowly peddling uphill. I admired her pluck since I've seen young guys with nice bikes walking it. Never-the-less I had to fly by her because I'm slowly turning into a roadie jerk.

It happens more quickly than you think.

God...next I'll be giving old guys and kids on BMX bikes the look.

commuting has been sporadic, to say the least!

cranked 26 miles today (global warming has its positives = 60 deg F in march). felt good!
wind/sun on my back in return trip (no wind am, chilly start though) so was perfect!

been 3 weeks since bike commute, new mini-bus route to/from work using public transit that started in feb, '07. it's free, no $.

i can still get there quicker, as "relaxed" by bike, but hope to be mirror for others in their mass-transit
commutes. the bicycling example does not seem to be drawing a mass following!

Well this week should be my first full week of commuting since I have been battling bronchitis for the past 3 weeks.

THe ride in was great despite it being more uphill. It was around 32 degrees and for me that is shorts weather. The way home was even nicer with a temp around 70. However that was a headwind that killed me. It was one of those deceptive winds - looking out the office window it appeared to be calm but oh no. Anyway ... despite a lot of the way home being downhill it kicked my butt and I coughed up a lot of remaining gook. Can't wait to get that fit feeling again.

worktheweb 03-12-07 08:26 PM

Did 10 miles more than usual today because of the great weather -- absolutely wonderful out there. Cool enough to keep you comfortable when you push yourself, but warm enough to wear light clothes. The warm weather brought out a people on the MUP -- lots of joggers, bladers, scooters, and walkers to navigate around -- the number of people on the must be up fivefold from last week. I kinda miss the solitude. I was even drafted by a rollerblader at one point during the commute. Also, a ton of ninja bikers tonight -- it must be people who hung it up for the winter -- but there were a ton of people decked in black or dark clothes challenging my HID's ability to illuminate them.

took my Nokians off today.

an extra hour of light.

temperature in the 50's.

need I say more? :)

JSChance 03-13-07 05:24 AM

First ride of the season. Had intended on starting earlier, but daytime highs of 40 degrees and overnight temps of 22 degrees left substantial patches of ice along my path, and with no studs, didn't want to tempt fate.

Ride in was good, plenty dark (and what exactly are we saving the daylight for I ask?)

cooperwx 03-13-07 05:47 AM

Welcome back to the ride, JSChance.

The last 18 hours have seen maybe the two worst commutes I've had. yesterday afternoon, I was passed in the RTOL by a guy who then got back into my through lane after passing me. I wasn't in all that much danger, it was just rediculous. Then as I'm looking to get into the center turn lane of a 5-lane road, an old lady slows behind me. I'm waving like crazy, she doesn't know what I'm doing, I don't know what she's doing. Finally I get off the bike and onto the curb, and she passes me. I walk the bike across five lanes of traffic.

This morning, I get brushed by a rear-view mirror. See thread. Ahhh!!

GTcommuter 03-13-07 06:19 AM

I woke up at my normal time this morning and it was pitch black outside. I got to work a few minutes early and watched the sun rise off the back porch, feeling like a farmer getting started before the crack of dawn. It was actually 7:55. And my bike clock is wrong...grrr, I'm all confused.

steve2k 03-13-07 06:46 AM

I tried a new route today that I discovered on a 26 mile training ride on Sunday. The new route cuts out the 200m of mud that I normally have to navigate through (MTB on road tyres = lots of slipping in the mud), but means the last mile or so is all uphill. Still it's 3 minutes quicker so I might try it again tomorrow. I'm sure that hill will get easier.

Wulfheir 03-13-07 06:48 AM

Woke up to a surprise 3 inches of snow. It rained before it snowed so there was a nice icy base. After I thought the studs might be away for the winter, they came back out this morning for sure. It was a fun and beautiful ride in. The worse the weather seems to be, the larger gap motorists leave me to do my thing.

Yesterday however, when the roads were clean and dry I was waiting at a red light in the right hand lane waiting to go straight thru. I was just right of center lane, and a JAM behind me loops around me on my left, turns in front of me to go right. Would he have done that if I was a smart car or a festiva or something small? I doubt it. I said, "illegal move". Then I got buzzed by a guy doing 80km in a 60 zone.

Mr_H 03-13-07 06:56 AM

Great ride in...about 45 degrees, a light wind. Birds chirping (one of the reasons I love biking since I can't hear those in the car).
Get into work, find out the email system isnt working right, several users can't login, etc etc.

I'm eyeing my bike and wondering if I can make a run for it right now....

knucklesandwich 03-13-07 07:05 AM

No gloves, no hat, just a light jacket and knee warmers, neither of which I'll need heading home tonight.

A tons of bikers on the MUP this morning.

ModoVincere 03-13-07 07:13 AM

Nice...just a tad cooler than yesterday. Averaged 16 mph for 8.3 miles.

jyossarian 03-13-07 07:40 AM

The warmer temps are bringing out the spring & summer commuters. Saw a few more on the ride to work and saw some new bikes locking up where I usually lock up. Luckily, one of those springtime commuters told me about a bike rack I didn't know about previously. Ride to work was fine. Played leapfrog w/ a guy on a mtb and noticed that despite having repaved the road a few months ago, big potholes are forming in the same spots. Loverly.

cakmakli 03-13-07 07:41 AM

Had a great ride in today. Looking forward to the ride back in near 70 degree weather. The only problem I'm having is figuring out what to wear when it cold in the morning and hot in the evening. I usually end up leaving layers at work.

RonH 03-13-07 07:54 AM

I'm working the late shift today (2:00 PM to close [6:30 PM]) so the ride in should be awesome. Today's high is supposed to be ~82F (28C) with lots of sunshine. Now that's my kinda weather. http://www.thesmilies.com/smilies/sign0200.gif
I guess I'll have to break out the sandals. :D

+1 on the above. Now we'll get that "monster" winter storm that never really came since I have taunted the weather gods!:p

genel 03-13-07 08:12 AM

Back in the saddle again! First commute since snow started to fly in Jan. Light wind, clear, real nice sunrise with red accents.
