Surprise snowfall this morning, so took it slow for a fun ride in.

pinkrobe 12-10-07 11:04 AM

The fresh snow made this nice fffwwwww noise on the way in. Very nice! :D

caloso 12-10-07 11:13 AM

35F and misty. My fingertips were cold but everything else was fine after 10 minutes of riding. I finally found some battery-powered LED Xmas lights at Walgreens and I attached a string to my back pack--I hope that looks jaunty and festive as well as safe.

HardyWeinberg 12-10-07 11:47 AM

35F also, foggy but sunbreaks. Forgot my food and underwear, grrr

JoeyMac 12-10-07 12:05 PM

rode the snow cruiser into work today. Balloon tires, radio strapped to the handlebars, super comfy seat. I was slow-rollin so I stayed on the sidewalks most of the time, and I was getting really funny looks from people waiting at the bus stops when I rolled by rocking tunes and dancing along with the pedals.

StokerPoker 12-10-07 12:26 PM

My ride to the store last night was great. there was a coating of ice on everything and I barely stayed on my feet walking to the garage. Got on the bike and felt much safer. Those Innova studded tired did their job fairly well. if I put too much force on the pedals in too high of a gear I could get the rear tire to spin a bit but the only other time I slid in a 3 mile ride was taking one corner a little fast and I caught a crack in the pavement.

vtjim 12-10-07 12:29 PM

Scary when you're safer riding your bike than you are walking. :p (Been there and done that, too!)

It's been so dry these past few months that today was the first time I'd really done much cycling in humidity. Yes, it was more cool than warm (maybe 60F when I came in), but this makes me dread normal summertime commuting.

yeah... I wouldn't have gotten to the end of my street on foot in the time it took me to do 3 miles on the bike

Flimflam 12-10-07 02:11 PM

It snowed for a bit yesterday meaning there was a bit more wet on the road, but otherwise the same as later last week - warmer today.

Good ride in though.

scoatw 12-10-07 03:49 PM

Ridin' in this morning I was expecting to wake up to a downpour. Instead it was just a light mist, still put on my rainpants. Good thing, cause I was pretty damp when I got to work. This aftn I did my three-trails ride home. I did a portion of the Olentangy Bikepath, Sharon Woods, and home via the Alum Creek trail. Didn't see anyone on any of the paths. In between I stopped at the bank in Worthington and a lady in there commented about how it was a little cold to be riding. I told her "it was good for you". She comes back with "Oh, I know". As if she's done it before. More rain expected tom'rw.

Fell on my butt three times on the way to work! It was a glaze of ice off and on the whole way. Two out of the three falls, I had already gotten off the bike to walk across:rolleyes:. Supposed to get more freezing rain tonight. Think I'll be driving in the morning. I guess I need studded tires.

mjw16 12-11-07 06:35 AM

I managed to get home dry yesterday riding largely in between rain showers. Even though I had my jacket I just didn't feel getting wet, otherwise, with temps in the 50's, it was comfortable riding weather. I parked it a couple of times under the 14th St. bridge and a Metro bridge by the airport where I discovered a slow leak in my back tire. My worn Ritchey Speedmax's finally gave out, I had a pencil eraser sized tear in the casing. After a leisurly tube change I was on my way again. When I got home I put my Continentals back on so today's ride was much faster. I need to find a durable set of cyclo cross tires for winter commuting, the Continental Twisters look just right but currently out of stock.

neilfein 12-11-07 06:59 AM

First ride since I got the bike back from the shop, and the drivetrain makes a horrendous rubbing noise. There's nothing caught that I could see, and it was shifting pretty badly. I hope it's something as simple as they forgot to lube the drivetrain, but I didn't ask them to clean it. Weird.

tarwheel 12-11-07 07:44 AM

Our Indian Summer continues. Yesterday the temps hit 81 degrees, not only a record for the date but the entire month of December. It's supposed to be just as hot or hotter today and tomorrow. Despite that, it was about 5 degrees cooler (mid-50s) riding into work this morning. It was also very humid, so I got pretty damp. It feels weird wearing a summer weight jersey and shorts after wearing heavy jerseys, jackets and tights for the past few weeks. The batteries started going dead in my Fenix flashlight about halfway to work, so I had to make a quick pit stop to install new ones. That's about the only shortfall of the Fenix lights -- they don't have a low battery indicator. And when NiMH batteries start to dim, they go pretty fast.

vtjim 12-11-07 08:16 AM

I was slow this morning. Just didn't have the energy. Otherwise, it was okay. Strange temperature change mid-ride. Like, mid-20s down to high-teens almost instantly. The air was really damp near the lake so it chilled my face straight through to my brain. :)

This is on tap for tonight...

ItsJustMe 12-11-07 09:02 AM

I was going to drive today, but the forecast called for freezing rain all day so I think driving a car would be too dangerous, so I took the bike instead. (also I'm lazy and didn't look forward to scraping ice off the car for 15 minutes this afternoon).
No new ice on the roads (the gravel parts are still icy from the weekend), but very heavy fog in places. Decent ride though.

jyossarian 12-11-07 09:17 AM

Nothing happened this morning. Yay!

Praxis 12-11-07 09:25 AM

Man, I love it here. High 40's. Softshell jacket was a bit too warm.

Missed a clip-in with a damp shoe and banged my shin coming off a light. Lots of red lights this morning.

Flimflam 12-11-07 09:42 AM

Man, stupid warmth. I get to my exs place last night for my visit, and had to hustle my ass real quick to get in. I was getting seriously *cold* from being too hot and having sweat come through right to my top layer :( - had too many layers on (too thick outer layer I think). Same coming home, so I just took it easier so as not to break sweat as much.

This morning more of the same, but wore different layers today hoping to figure it out - we just went through these warmer days a few weeks ago but I've already forgotten the combos I've been using - doh :p

Feels colder with the rush of air, but -1/30F seems balmy warm compared to what we've recently had.

pinkrobe 12-11-07 09:52 AM

Not too shabby. It's warm enough that I could leave the pogies at home without getting frostbite.

dngspot 12-11-07 10:05 AM

Wet, sleeting and slippery than whale poop on an iceberg.

Dare I ask how you know this??

And I can relate to what flimflam said. Trying to remember what you wore in different temps. I just figured I was getting old?

littlewaywelt 12-11-07 03:06 PM

I wrecked this morning. I skinned my knee and strained my neck but that was it. While I was out of the saddle trying to make a light, the chain decided granny gear was better than the big ring. I went right over the bars with the change in resistance.

Neck is getting a little sore...could have been worse. Mostly it was embarrassing.

trombone 12-11-07 03:23 PM

Sorry to hear about your stack, Littlewaywelt. Hope the neck feels better today.

All very uneventful last few days, except that I got beeped again on the same section of road. It's a fairly narrow, quite busy one-lane each way street with cars parked down either side. I don't judge there's enough room for cars to pass me safely without me being pushed into the door zone, so I take the lane.

That stretch is perhaps 300 metres long, and finishes with a roundabout that invariably has a short queue. I ride down it at about 30km/h, and it's a 40km/h limit.

It's very irritating to keep getting beeped! Maybe Sydney drivers are getting more aggressive? All for the sake of 10km/h and 10 seconds earlier to the traffic queue!

The other day I was following a bus down that stretch. Buses only travel around 25km/h down that road, but I don't see anyone beeping them. Perhaps next time I get stuck behind a bus I'll keep ringing my bell, and making 'move over' gestures, as that seems to be the done thing when stuck behind slower traffic on that stretch!

vrkelley 12-11-07 03:37 PM

32F and icey. Nice ride in.

Littlewaywelt...Ouch. Sorry to hear that.

Commuted for the first time today! I'm waiting for my Redline 925 commuter to arrive, so today I took my Redline Monocog SS mountain bike - the commute is a mere 2 miles, so obviously it wasn't a problem except for the lack of fenders to keep from getting splattered mud all over my work clothes. This is my second week at this job - I've never worked close enough to commute daily. I was 25 hilly miles from work at my previous employer, and would commute twice a week during the summer, but it took a ton of planning and time and I couldn't make it work daily.

I'm PSYCHED to get my fixie commuter later this week - I know I'm going to be wishing my commute to work was longer than a mere 2 miles!

k_tech 12-11-07 04:42 PM

it's 71f degrees in knoxville today. made a trip to downtown and back, about 7 miles roundtrip. everyone i encountered was safe, aware and courteous. must be the nice weather. or maybe it's all my attention-getting garb. lots of fellow riders out today too. that's always nice to see, since it's rare to see another cyclist on my work commute.

scoatw 12-11-07 04:44 PM

Hey you KC"ers. Let us know how the ridin' was today with all that freezin' rain.
