No commute today. My daughter's first day of day care, plus this:
Winds WNW at 25-35 mph, gusting to 50 mph. Wind is one thing, but the thought of a 50-mph gust pushing me into traffic had me thinking, "Maybe not." |
Brisk 32 degrees on the way in. I lounged around the house until it was daylight so I didn't have to futz around with lights. Legs are still tight from training [pounding hills] 40 miles on Saturday. So it was just an easy cruise. The 20 mph headwind will no doubt turn around into a 40 mph headwind for the ride home.
I need to get in the habbit of getting everything rigged the night before. It's too much of hassle getting it all together in the morning. |
On Sunday, I swept the road from my house out to the intersection of the main street on my route to work, so it was all smooth and gravel-free for the first 50m. Very nice. Other than that, I didn't need leg warmers, a balaclava or headband. If I'm really lucky, I can ditch my jacket on the way home today.

I passed today. While a headwind is good for working up a sweat, gusts that could potentially blow me into traffic (or alternatively, blow a blunt sided SUV into the shoulder) are not my cuppa tea. I lifted this a.m., and will hop on the treadmill during '24' tonight...

Had a rehearsal tonight for an upcoming concert, which had the added benefit of lengthening the commute. At one point I saw fairly steep bridge off to the side, so I rode over it and back just for kicks. Don't get many hills in these parts... and blasting by motor scooters on a folder while going uphill is FUN! :D

the rain yesterday was incredible, ditto for the wind this morning. It scared me off. I haven't bicycle commuted since last Wed. I suck. The metro trains were packed and delayed all over the place, it was a miserable commute in on the public system. Took as long as my 12-mile one way usually does on the bike. Of course, I don't know how long it would have taken me with that wind.
|
I thought about commuting today, but the forecast of 30mph sustained winds and warnings of 60mph gusts convinced me to take Metro. I would hate to hit a 60mph gust over the bridge!

I had a week off from riding last week and it was great to get back on it. My lungs are burning more than usual because of the cold/flu/crap last week.
I took a different route that took me past some gardens, etc. I had a "great" view of the freeway also. That was probably the best view of the morning. Cars lined up going nowhere. |
Good commute this mornring but a bit cold at 34 degrees. But once I got on the path and my blood pumping I was fine. (IMO cold, like that, is only in your head.) Going home today is should be better with a high of 62 degrees forcasted. Thankfully I tought ahead and brought shorts with me for the ride back.

My legs were a little heavy after racing on Sunday but not as bad as I expected. A bit breezy, but nothing too bad. All in all, a fine ride to work. I brought a jersey and bibs in my bag in case I have the opportunity to go on a longer detour home.

Ride in was good this morning. About 42 when I left. Bummer is I can't find my full fingered gloves so my hands were cold. Had a flat but still made the 9 mile ride to light rail in 36 minutes (including tube change time). I think this might have been the only dry rider into work this week.

Beautiful day today, lots of sun, mid 30's (f) and a light tailwind. Doesn't get much better.
Must have been a wild weekend around here. Airline size bottles spaced about 1/3 mile apart for three miles. |
Heading home right now, with major wind:
Wind Speed: NW 33 G 40 MPH I took the bus in this morning because it was even windier than that. At least it's sunny. Wish me luck! |
We got some wind here in Toronto too. Going south was fun. Coming back north... not so fun.
|
First commute this morning. I got about 2km away from the house when I ran over a chunk of scrap metal thus ending the commute! Oh well. I'll patch it tonight and give it another go tomorrow.
|
Not a great start to commuting, APTokyo. But think of it this way: it probably can't get much worse!
No bike again today, winds still gusting over 40mph, and going in it would be in my face the entire way. East coasters, how'd you fare? |
Last night was a great ride home, I actually had the wind at my back for the bulk of it...nice for a change:) Also was down to shorts and a long sleeve shirt. Only a matter of time now....
This morning was a nice, easy ride into work. Light traffic, good weather, slight wind. On another note: I just passed 1,000 miles for the year. Yay! Last year it took me twice as long to do this same amount :) |
It was a beautiful morning for a ride. 35deg F and sunny. There wasn't very much wind though. I guess the "highlight" would be almost getting run over by a granny in a caprice.
|
The morning ride was good. It started snowing but it wasn't any trouble. I lucked out with this nor'easter... I had a tailwind yesterday riding home, and a tailwind this morning. I rode home in shorts yesterday. First time this season.
|
Had my first run-in with the trolley tracks yesterday...they ate my front tire and I almost went down but, somehow held on. After work commute was great, ran into a fellow commuter riding the same bike as me and had a nice conversation for a few miles or so.

What a commute. In two days I have had two flats. So....instead of just changing out the tube and running with it, I used the patch kit. While the sealant was drying I checked out my tire. Lo and behold....a rock was wedged in the tire at the exact spot of the puncture (glad I am anal about how I position the stem and the tire name). Overall...successful patch and fix.
However, when getting the tire back on, I noticed a spoke just hanging there loose. Man....flat AND a broken spoke. Glad I have 36 spokes on the rear. So...I just removed it and plan to get it replaced tonight. Other than that...the rest of my 13 mile commute was awesome! Rain this afternoon....but at least I found the culprit that was caused the last two flats. Note to self....ALWAYS check the tire both inside and out (as well as the rim). I should knw this as I am almost celebrating 2 years of commuting! But....haste has made tube waste for me these last two times. Chris Houston |
the bike cage was jam packed this morning. We'll see how many of them are here tomorrow when it rains all day. It'll be a good test for my new waterproof gear.
|
On the last mile I fell in behind a Super Fred: old style styrofoam helmet with nylon cover, Greg Lemond style Oakley sunglasses, STP jacket, dress slacks tucked into socks, loafers. On a single-speed with full fenders.
I aspire to be that guy some day. |
Sunny, +8c, no wind. Female joggers, hard to beat that.
