14 miles into 20mph headwind. 4 miles of hail (first time for me). 8 miles of well-earned and beautiful tailwind. Low 50s for temp, so not too bad.
|
It was a beautiful blue sky commute through the redwoods this morning. It is in 80's, with more blue sky, for the run down the hill home................................Life is good:thumb:
|
Got a flat on the way in - wasn't a puncture, tire pinched on a small divot on the road at 104th and CPW. I was surprised, am running on fully inflated 32's. Light drizzle on the way home. Still feels like spring isn't quite here yet, high 40's low 50's. Should be better by Friday.

Not a commute this morning so much as a lactate threshold test workout that happened to end at work.
|
I took a dutch oven (with piping hot dump cake) to work today on my trailer. Other than the trailer being somewhat bouncy, and attracting a few double-takes, it went well. Dump cake was a hit, too.

my front rim has finally worn down to it's seams! After years of riding this bike to work in all kinds of weather I've literally worn out the sidewall of my rim. There is probably well over 20,000 miles on this bike and on that rim. But I've never fatigued a rim in quite this way. My front brake was starting to grab at the rim where it was wearing the worst so I had to replace it today. I wanted to just buy a rim and do a rebuild but my schedule doesn't allow for the time.
Went to a bike shop and bought a replacement front wheel for a good price, strapped it onto the back of my milkcrate and rode into work. Locked the extra wheel to the bike until the end of the day when I transferred the rim strip, QR, tire and tube and off I went with the old one strapped to the back of the milkcrate. Makes me realize that this bike, which I use literally every day in all kinds of weather, is in desperate need of a complete overhaul. It is truly amazing how much abuse I put my commuting bike through. Remarkable that it lasts as long as it does. |
No commute for me the last two days. They are repaving my trail. Looking forward to it being open tomorrow.

Dark as always and temp was pleasant. Musta been in the high 50's with slight breeze. I rode the C.Itoh. Quiet ride in. Stopped for a donut at the shop by the office.

- First day back in a couple of weeks due to travel.
- My huffing and puffing going up a small hill scared a mare and her pony. Typically they give me no notice at all. - I crossed paths with two commuters going in the other direction. That's a first for me. - Got to replace the battery in my planet bike HID light - it's only holding charge for about 20 minutes or so. That's going to be expensive. |
Fantastic ride to work this morning after a brutal commute yesterday with headwinds topping 30 mph in gusts. It was a little chillier this morning (low 40s F) but felt warmer due to the relatively calm air. Rode my singlespeed for the first time in several weeks and made my best time since last fall, finishing my morning commuting about 3-1/2 minutes faster than usual. I have not been riding the SS much because I couldn't carry hardly any gear, making it hard to dress for cold mornings and warm afternoons. However, I received my new Acorn seatbag last week, and it has room to carry all of my tools, wallet, cell phone, lunch and spare clothes. Looks like I'll be riding the SS a lot more often this spring and summer.

Very nice this morning, 25*F, but it's supposed to hit 60*F+ today. Nice after rain the last 3 days, with stiff to brutal headwinds going home every day. Yesterday the winds were gusty at 35 MPH or so, and varied between headwind and from the side, with a cold rain thrown in blowing stinging (a bit of ice) stuff in my face.
The interesting bit is, I don't even think about it anymore. The weather just is what it is, I don't even think about "I should have driven the car" or whatever. Kind of weird in a way. And I'm always having fun, even when I'm getting pelted by sleet with a headwind. |
Overcast, low 40sF. Little bit of a crosswind blowing from the west. I'm suffering from a fatover. :D I ate 10 Hooters chicken wings for some reason (beer had something to do with it) last night, and felt like dirt this morning. A granny on a trike could have reeled me in. Or maybe not. I wound up behind a guy on a hybrid and we had an easy ride at 15-17MPH for about 3 miles.

Yesterdays' rain cleaned the air so well that I didn't smell car exhaust on the way in.
Sunshine,40's wind gusting to 20. Thak god for small favors.:) |
49F and sunny! Aside from hitting a nasty pothole right in front of my building (I was looking for traffic, not at the street), it was a nice ride. I don't think I did any damage to the bike, but I guess I'll find out on the ride home.

Have you ever had to pedal down hill because the head wind was so strong?
Have you ever left your bike in the small chainring all the way to work for the same reason? Have you ever worn your winter gear at the end of April because it was only 1 degree in the AM? Have you ever bought a cup of coffee just to warm your hands? Have you ever wondered what it is like to live in California? |
50F on the way in. The combination of the fast riding and exploring yesterday plus my allergies resulted in a slow ride.
Towards the end of my ride I was buzzed by a prius part way in the bike lane. Instantaneously pissed me off and I went into full on sprint mode going anaerobic in a couple seconds. Fortunately the light turned green and the prius took off just before I got there. |

This was on the St Lawrence River, on a one-month tour from Campbellton to Montreal. We were 15 years old, and we learned to draft very well, out of necessity. I ended up pulling in the front position most of the time, being the strongest. My colleagues asked me if I wanted to move back, and my way of saying no thanks was to pull ahead and let them get slapped in the face (and leg muscles) with the headwind. |
Good ride in today, much better than the killer headwind going home last night. Still felt it today in my legs.
Musta ruffled the feathers of a fellow commuter, but oh, well. Waiting stopped at a cross, and he bolts in front of me then proceeds to poke along. I hung behind him for a sec, not wheelsucking but off to his left. He then hangs a left in front of me through a parking lot and races through.. and comes back in in the same distance in front of me poking along again. I had slowed down for him the first time out of courtesy, after that exibition I just dropped him. -R |
39F. Headwind, sucked. Saw another cyclist blinking in the distance, couldn't catch them. Allergies/cold slowing me down. Ugh.
|
Phew, exhausted. This is my first commute since the office moved locations. What was previously 6 miles has turned into 28. I'm not sure this old steel mtn bike is going to cut it, it may be time for something a little more efficient. On the plus side, I'm sure I'll be in better shape six months from now.

35F, brisk baby.
Brutal headwind last night, which was also a pull-the-trailer-of-preschooler-up-the-hill night. Nice and sunny though! |
Started off late and slow, legs were heavy. By the time I got to the MUP I had caught 3 other riders, passing one and pacing with two others. I was in the middle, 2 or 3 bike lengths back from one who looked like a very strong rider, the guy behind me on the hybrid overlapped my rr. wheel at times. No problem, we all knew the others were there and were spinning along at (probably 18 mph). By the time we got to the rugby fields my legs felt loose and I decided to pull out and drop the hammer. I got up to about 26 mph to pull away, then permanently dropped them at the 14th Street bridge. I then hit 28 mph in a sprint on 15th street, starting from Independance to the second light, slowing and jumping on to the sidewalk, narrowly making my turn to the adjoining sidewalk. Legs continued to feel spongy for a while but I've got the spring back now. Alot of fun this morning, should be a nice ride home.
