Warm and foggy this morning, in the low 50s. So nice to be able to ride, it's been very very cold here for the past week and I don't have cold weather gear so I haven't been riding. Felt good to get back on the bike.

ericy 01-07-08 09:12 AM

First commute for me since sometime in Dec. Great weather - temps around 50 degrees, and sunny. High today will be 68 degrees .

Ran over a squirrel - it dashed out on the trail ahead of me, stopped and then it should have zigged, but instead it zagged. Poor little bugger was done for, I think.

Fought a good headwind for about 7 miles, which made the ride in a lot harder. The way home I ought to have a tailwind, so it all evens out.

At the office, we have showers and lockers in the basement. When I went in, there were two other guys who from the looks of it had also ridden to work.

Still fatter and slower than I would like :(.

First commute of the new year. Fresh legs feel fine. Had a wrong way rollerblader to contend with in the narrow space between a bus and a line of traffic. We passed each other w/o incident when he ducked in between cars long enough for me to pass.

caloso 01-07-08 11:13 AM

Good lord, why do I engage the cagers? Remember to just smile and wave, smile and wave!

aMull 01-07-08 04:07 PM

12 degress C out today, from -12 a few days ago. Even though it was wet from all the snow melting and the drizzle, i had a great commute and wore a short sleeved short and a hoodie on top. Can't wait for spring/summer :D

aboyd 01-07-08 07:08 PM

50 and foggy in the morning, 73 and beautiful on the way home....very nice compared to last week.

zephyr 01-07-08 08:56 PM

A mostly overcast day today after weekend rain storms, but the 27 mi RT commute today was pretty tame. It was a calm 50F this morning, and upper 50sF on the ride home this afternoon.

BA Commuter 01-07-08 09:15 PM

Absolutely gorgeous! In the Philly suburbs, it was near 60' today and expected to approach 70' tomorrow.

This ain't Iowa, so I must be in heaven???

sintesi 01-07-08 09:36 PM

Breezy and overcast in the 50s both morning and afternoon. Everything still wet after quite a bit of rain. The ferry was delayed while waiting for a cruise ship to dock. Still beats driving on the freeway.

Otter 718 01-07-08 09:46 PM

Wow, what a day for a ride. I haven't ridden in to work since November, and today the weather finally got me motivated. Sure beat the subway!

It was lovely, as I went in the afternoon just to drop by the office - then went on to the LBS from there for kit browsing. 40 degrees(ish), dry and a strong headwind - but I didn't have to carry anything today. What a difference that makes!

hankbrandenburg 01-08-08 05:53 AM

Another warm one today! About 48 when I left the house.

Yesterday on the way home I helped a member of the Prince William County PD push a disabled vehicle onto the MUT - unfortunately, one of the "multiple" uses is as a breakdown lane. :o

yoyostock 01-08-08 07:06 AM

Relaxing. 1 mile, from my home to my bus stop. Over the weekend, I bought a 10-year old, great condition mountain bike for this daily voyage.

tarwheel 01-08-08 07:55 AM

Rolled out of bed this morning looking forward to commuting in the balmy weather we're having. The high today is supposed to hit the mid-70s and set a new record. However, the same weather conditions also caused a thick, pea-soup fog this morning -- so I opted not to ride. I had trouble seeing yesterday in light fog, and it was really dense this morning, perhaps the worst I have ever seen here.

I had other reasons for driving as well. First, I started getting a saddle sore yesterday and want to clear it up before it got any worse. Second, I had some errands to run that require my truck. So, hopefully the weather will stay nice for the rest of the week and I get some more rides in.

Tude 01-08-08 08:42 AM

Unbelievable weather - low 60s on the commute in - felt like continuing on and not going inside!

savethekudzu 01-08-08 09:14 AM

Mid-50s F or so on my ride in, and I caught the fog tarwheel mentioned. I ride mostly on a MUP, though, so I didn't have to worry that much about being visible. I did burn my front light & rear blinkie.

My glasses were covered in condensation, so I let them slip down like reading glasses. I need wipers!
I'm finding that I really don't like riding through humidity. Dry air is great, but it's rare here most of the year.

Beautiful picture, Otter 718!

rodehazard 01-08-08 10:43 AM

Slight fog in Tucson, glasses clouded up at stop lights. Lovely temperature, lots of moisture in the air. First try with my new year pannier purchase and i liked not having a bag on my back.

Itsjustb 01-08-08 10:47 AM

If you read my post yesterday, you know yesterday was my first day back in the office/commuting since mid-December. My "day" in the office lasted < 3 hours. Day care called saying they thought the kid had pink eye. Good news: she doesn't. Bad news: she has infections in both ears and can't go back to day care. So, for 5 business days (10 commutes possible) of 2007, I have .5 commutes. That sucks.

pinkrobe 01-08-08 11:22 AM

Bleagh. I'm still sick. I dislike being sick. -15C on the ride in. Going home is going to suck.

god0 01-08-08 12:14 PM

Nice today about 35F when I left the house, one bike path was plowed but still icy, the other two paths required some walking. Enjoyed walking through the snow across the 1/2 mile "Old" General Sullivan Bridge bike path while traffic was bumer-to-bumper on the parallel "New" General Sullivan Bridge.

I love not driving!

caloso 01-08-08 12:26 PM

Warmer than expected, with a healthy southerly wind. Wore my new team jersey. Feels good.

Nice pic! You're commute takes you through DUMBO?

It's way above normal avg. temp today so I went jacketless to work and enjoyed every minute of it.

trombone 01-08-08 03:10 PM

Not a good commute yesterday afternoon. Wasn't concentrating, and made a couple of stupid mistakes. Got beeped for them (rightly so). Was so irritated with myself after the first one (switched lanes without checking properly) that I almost went full tilt into another cyclist on a MUP.

Bah. Hopefully this morning will be better!

Nice pic Otter, BTW.

trombone 01-08-08 04:13 PM

Much better commute. Picked up a roadie on Anzac bridge and couldn't shake him off. Was howling up the hill at full pelt, and he's just sitting pretty off the back wheel the whole time. When we stopped at the lights a few kms on, he laughed and said 'I was using you as a paceline'. What a cheek! Still, I console myself with the fact that he was going through his gears the whole way, whilst I'm sitting on a 39/18 without changing.

Hmmm, does that sound overly competitive? Heh heh, I'm not really bothered, just livens up the morning. Anyhoo, what with pushing it to keep him behind me I made good time into work. And no traffic incidents either. Much better ride.

hankbrandenburg 01-08-08 05:13 PM

Tough ride home - headwinds gusting to 25 mph. Still enjoyed the warm temp (68F) though!

drthos 01-08-08 05:44 PM

First commute ever from North Andover MA to Boston MA. 30 miles each way. For years I've avoided it because I assumed I couldn't create a tolerable route, but I finally buckled down and devised a route that's less trafficky.

It was muddy and gritty and I got a little rained on, but it was warm and it was FUN! It takes me about 1.5 hours by car during regular commuting hours, and it only took me 2 hours by bike (avg 15.8 mph) during the same hours. Only problem: darkness on the way home, once I got outside the city. I have plenty of lights/blinkers on so the cars can see me, but when there are NO streetlights and no houses and no cars, my new LED headlight is a little anemic and it's hard to see the road. And with a little ice and slush and plenty of potholes out there, it was a little tense at times.

But even so, it was as much fun as I think I've had commuting...ever. I'm now an official bike commuter. Yay me.

HardyWeinberg 01-08-08 05:44 PM

slushy! Left a rooster tail all the way to work.

trombone 01-08-08 07:47 PM

That's great, drthos! 30 miles is a big commute - are you planning to do it every day?

Sixty Fiver 01-08-08 07:53 PM

What is the word I am looking for...

Oh yes... there it is.

Cold.

But thankfully dry and the roads were clear.

zephyr 01-08-08 11:05 PM

A pleasant but cool day in southern cal for my 24 mile RT commute today. Looks like the rest of the week will be the same, so looking good for the first half of January. Goal this year is to bike commute 200 work days (did about 170 last year) averaging 25 miles RT, so I'll have to ration my non bike commute days carefully to make that goal.
