Lots of bikes in Seattle too, I'm noticing, now that I'm riding... Events and groups included. |
Rough commute this morning - big snow dump yesterday that melted and froze overnight. Most of the bike path was good (they are good about plowing them here) with short sections of black ice. One cool skid out!
Then I hit a section of the path that was unplowed and a jumbled mess of melted and refrozen footprints with a narrow icy bike track. Slow going (40 minute ride took over an hour) but good adventurous stuff! |
Today, the sun was finally shining, and it was over 50F.
Very nice for commuting. |
A little chilly on the way home. Didn't wear a jacket today because it was nice on the way in. Way home, was fighting head winds and a misting of rain at about 52F. Face and arms are all red now.
|
Sunny and 73 on our ride to get ice cream today. we got home well before the rain
|
After an evening of light fever and the shakes, I crawled out of bed and onto my bike. I think I was still doped up from decongestants. I was unable to turn properly for the first few blocks, until I almost went into a snowbank and adrenaline kicked in. All the snow will be gone by the end of the weekend, as we are expecting +20C temps on Saturday and Sunday. +17C on Monday is the forecast high, but we'll see just how warm it gets...

40's-50's.
25 mph headwind there, 25 mph tailwind back. |
This whole week has been pretty nice. We had our first glimmers of reasonable spring weather. Nice, easy commutes, cruising through the neighborhoods. I definitely love my single speed bike. Pure bicycle.

[QUOTE=coldfeet;6499530]Is that supposed to be JHFC? I laughed for a minute reading this bit.
[QUOTE] I liked the JHTC version, it is precisely the sound I made when I looked out at the snow. Somethng like a stifled sneeze crossed with trying not to swear :) |
Last night's commute to work was AWESOME. The weather was crisp but not windy, and I decided to mash big gears and ride as fast as I possibly could. I thought it would be fun. It was!
Unfortunately, during the night, I got a flat. On top of that, I had to work an extra hour so I was too lazy to fix the flat this morning. I got a ride home. I came in this afternoon and fixed the flat. I hope it lasts through the night. |
Today I was exposed to the world's stupidity and sadness. Nothing directed at me (other than a totally ignorable honk by some idiot), just depressing stuff. Kids dumping trash out of a car, a road rage incident, a homeless guy in diarrhea-soaked pants (I know, forgive me the graphical details, but at least you didn't have to smell it...) So despite sunny skies I was kind of down. Maybe it's not the commute's fault though; maybe just my general mood.

I also get angry at myself sometimes for just observing bad things and doing nothing. I could have confronted the trash-dumping kids for example, but didn't want to be accompanied by a van full of obscenity-screaming teens for the rest of my ride. *sigh* |
Upper-30s. Overcast. Light tailwind. Saw a regular bike commuter I hadn't seen since last "season." We exchanged happy greetings. The MUP is almost 100% clear of snow. One short section of edge-to-edge frozen granular, and that was it.
I attacked my chain/gears with cleaner and lube yesterday. Felt a little faster today. |
about 40 when i left the house this morning and the sun was shining and the birds were singing
the whole week is supposed to be stellar and getting warmer as the week goes on this makes me happy :D |
35F and the day after finishing the Houston to Austin MS150 - a good day for a morning commute! I put the rack and lights back on last night and was ready to roll this morning. No drama along the ride and my legs felt pretty good too. My butt on the other hand...
|
Nice day. Ride was a little crowded and had to actually ride/roll around the cars because it was so tight. Saw another BFer waiting at an intersection and shouted out to him.
|
I was hoping for rain, so I could try out my new Foxwear rain pants. No rain, alas, but they are very comfy.
|
bmx'd in. fun.
|
good ride in today, finally got my commuter bike back on the road. The weekend was amazing. Sunny and 20C, a little breezy on Sunday, but got about a 3 hour ride in. Only I could possibly get a sunburn in Canada in April.
|
44F and sunny! What a great day, especially after the rain and clouds last week.
|
Still fighting off a cold, but other than a hacking cough I'm OK. No problems riding in today, although it was just cold enough to warrant a balaclava. If all goes well, I'll be heading home in a t-shirt and shorts.
Oh, it's supposed to snow tomorrow... |
keep on rolling
Hello,
it was 25F this morning as i left for my morning commute/ride. I was psyche because that meant that the trails would be usable as ice trails. there is not much icebiking left to do, 2 days before the close of the VAST trails, but you have to take what mother nature gives. I am getting a little ahead of myslef though, first i have to rip off the 6 miles of so to the trail. the mud was frozen on the dirt roads in most places, but in the wet spots it was not, though not as mushy as it will be this afternoon. the entry to the trail was mud, which is what i expected, but the mud was frozen. this meant i can ride over it without pissing anyone off. I expected through the river flates to be riding a 3 foot wide thread of snow and ice and this is what happened. As i enter the forest section of the trail coverage was fine and it is the quick kind of ice riding. frozen solid and thin. Anyway, as i moved out of the forest i decided to cross the corn field and i expected this to be very spotty, but it really increases the safety of my route. I was surprised to find that the corn field had good coverage. it was at that point that decided not to dump myself out on the road, but to keep the ice biking going. I basically veered off onto another trail that is a lot of fun. it loops around for several miles, none which gets me much closer to work. 7:15am, 30 minutes to get to work, still playing on the trail. i decided to get on the road and point myself as directly toward work as possible. I am between 6 and 7 miles from work. i flat a tube, Find a spot on the edge of the road with enough room and change that puppy out. change it in record time, get back on start down the hill right in front of me. I get going pretty good down the hill, before the back up tube gets pinched too. That's the problem with cartidges, you have to live witth what you get out of the cartridge and sometimes below freezing the pressure just isn't the same as "normal" conditions. Anyway, time to become a running commuter, just on the sweet side of 6 miles out. I could have grabbed a bus 4 miles or so into the run (as i kept my bike rolling along side me), but at that point i want to finish my little trek. You know it is monday when you have 2 tubes that won't hold air. Anyway, it was a great commute. One of my last ice rides of the season, coupled with one of my first spring runs. if i could have done a cold water swim or a white water paddle at the end it would have been perfect. Peace, dave |
Warmest commute in of the year at 5c. It threatened to rain the entire trip and at one point it starting spitting just a tad but nothing materialized. Great ride in.
|
A little chilly this morning (26 deg) but it should warm up nicely today (54 deg). Then the rest of the week is suppose to be amazing. Can't wait, I'm tired of cloudy skies and cold toes!
|
A nice ride in this morning. Temps in the upper 30's still but not much wind and it was sunny. I warmed up nicely within the first few miles. The cold winter has killed my cyclo computer battery, my speed wouldn't register above 15 mph or so. Looking forward to temps near 60 this afternoon for the ride home.
|
Traffic was heavier then usual, but the weather was fine (33f, no wind, sunny). Got caught in a line of traffic at a light. I could have jumped on the sidewalk, but I lectured some boy scouts yesterday not to do that very thing. Usually I can sneak by along the curb but the traffic to far right.
Should be nice ride home later. |
I pressure washed my bike this weekend and changed back to regular tires.
This morning was my first ride in two weeks (work and sick). It was a nice ride in- sunny skies, fast quiet ride on the regular tires. I might have to take (find ;) ) the long way home today. Am trying to decide if I should ride the MN ironman (century) on the 26th. Then, commuter or roadie :o?? |
No ride on Thursday or Friday. Mrs. Caloso was out of town for a conference and I wasn't velo-organized enough to get the twins to daycare without the minivan.
Today's ride was an effort to hit as many BF sub-forums as possible. I rode my '83 Gazelle (C&V, road) to work (commuting), which has been converted to fixed gear (bicycle mechanics, SS/FG) and outfitted with aerobars for an upcoming flat triathlon (tri). I brought my jersey and bibs for a post-work shakedown ride. It's not the most comfortable ride for the commute, but I can tell already that she's quiet and fast. |
Still waiting for spring to hit New England, but it might arrive this week.
In the high 20s this morning, but nice and toasty all bundled up. Only my fourth bike commute day this year, but already quite a bit faster than a few rides ago. The legs are warming up. Currently commuting on my '86 Puch 190. Bought an '86 Bridgestone 500 last week that will see a little commuting duty. And considering a nice, very cheap Univega Viva Sport 12-speed that just popped up. My wife will love a full garage. |
