Andy:

I'm really sorry to hear about this. I'm glad your bike wasn't touched and hope you were able to get your credit cards cancelled and all that. Sigh.

Normally, the ARBT is pretty safe east of the college, up where you were. It's the lower portion, towards Discovery Park, that has the bad reputation. I'm surpised to hear of it up at Watt.

This sounds beautiful. Good for you!

No commute for me today. I'm up in Atlanta getting some training so I had to drive in to the training center. I did see one guy commuting this morning with an ear-to-ear grin on his face. I can't wait to get back home so I can start commuting again.

Nice easy ride into work today. I rode my first Solo century yesterday and wanted to let the legs take it easy today. A nice tailwind helped greatly with this.

caloso 05-27-03 11:21 AM

I did a reverse brick (ran 6, rode 30) yesterday in preparation for my July tri, so today my legs were just dead. Took it easy and rode slowly and directly into work this morning. Looks like summer has arrived in NorCal, after a two-week spring. Should reach 95F today.

Kodama 05-27-03 04:10 PM

Beautiful commute today, first in short sleeves for the year. Warm with scattered clouds and a gentle tailwind (will it switch and be a tailwind for the ride home? I know it would switch for the headwind both directions ;) ) Wasn't able to put any extra mileage in as I was late, due to the office at my apartment building opening an hour later than normal on Tuesdays....the ride home should be great, but crowded with after work exercisers. I think that it is about time to abandon using the trail for the rides home, unless I'm in an absolute rush. Many streets here have bike lanes, and you rarely see people on them --they all ride the trail.

My first day back commuting after a week's vacation. My 85 yr old Mom wanted to go to Alaska, so we spent last week in Anchorage, Seward and Denali. I was really impressed with the bike paths in Anchorage, and they extend a long way toward Denali. I was drooling over bikes, but did notice that a lot of them had totally dry, rusty, chains. One of the B&B hosts said that Alaska has the highest percentage of people that walk to work, and one of the highest percentages of bike commuters. Got back home 1:00 AM today, got up at 6:00 and rode to work. It seems to have helped with the travel weariness and jet lag, I made it through the day of work feeling quite normal. Yet another advantage to bike commuting.

Today was up in the hot-n-sweaty range, with a light wind which couldn't decide which way it was blowing. At the library today, I had to move someone's NEXT MTB out of the doorway....and call me a bike snob if you like, but something about the way it felt made me very happy for my lil' Swee'pea. :D

On the way home, it was cool, but not cold, and the light wind had settled into a tailwind. Bugs peppered my face by the swarm at times--I was afraid to inhale. About three miles from home a black cat slunk across my path, but no disaster ensued (unlike last year!) As I passed the farm tavern two miles from home, a party and late-night volleyball game was going on. (I was tempted to stop.) A mile later, frogs were singing up a storm in a flooded field. All in all, a lovely ride home...I didn't even have a new bug collection when I got home and blew my nose. :D

You know you're living in Queensland when you can ride in pouring "winter" rain and still be in short sleeves without even bothering with a rain jacket. It was just beautiful to watch the ocean roll in from the mist. It's also beautiful to note that our water supply is now above 50% capacity for the first time in over a year! Next target is 56% (the pre-2002 "all time record low").

mrfix 05-28-03 05:34 AM

64 degees F, light rain, 5 mph headwind, didn't wear the rain jacket. Had a great, relaxing ride in, I was tired when I started out and was tired when I got to work. The clouds are supposed to stay with us all day so I'll most likely get wet again on the way home.

mjw16 05-28-03 06:20 AM

Upper 50's and damp this morning, but no rain...yet (I'm sure I'll get it on the trip home). Averaged about 16 mph-intentionally slow and saw the most riders-5-to date (I guess I'm out there pretty early). Felt good but I'm tired now, I didn't get much sleep last night, but the anticipation of the afternoon ride home always makes me feel better.

Rats13 05-28-03 10:55 AM

Didn't happen today.

Planned on it but I got stuck at a friends house till almost 1:00 am and then went home and had to help my wife with he graduate school homework till 2:30 am.

No way I could answer the 5:45 am wake up bell :(

I definitely feel guilty.

Gonna go tommorrow instead

tchazzard 05-28-03 03:44 PM

All the rain stayed south of us...so cloudy yet dry weather here in Maine. And temps keep getting warmer and warmer.

Kodama 05-28-03 05:30 PM

Windy today, no fun headwind. Looks even windier now, with it blowing all directions. sigh.

Inkwolf 05-28-03 08:49 PM

There was rain predicted for today. It was overcast, but when I rode in to work, nothing much was falling. No wind at all. Later, about enough fell to get the road damp and evaporate.

The wind came up afterward, and I had to plow a headwind all the way home. :( I may take tomorrow off, my legs have had a constant strained, tired feel when biking, all week long, even at times when the rest of me feels great. I want to rest up for some longer rides this weekend.

antonius 05-28-03 10:27 PM

Excellent ride into work this morning, nice and calm, averaged 26 km/hr, made it to work in 1 hour. Ride home was a little slower, wind picked up during the day, so I had a headwind. It was sunny and warm. Arrived home and there was hamburger soup in the slow cooker and fresh baked bread, all ready for me for dinner. Ahhhh! Life is good.

As well I put in over 1,000 km on my new commuter as of the beginning of April. Also, no flats yet. I haven't fixed a flat in over two months. The new bike came with Conti Touring 2000's.

mrfix 05-29-03 04:53 AM

Got sprinkled on lightly all the way home last night, no bike today it's late night at the shop night and up at 4:30 tomorrow so I drive.

darrencope 05-29-03 05:52 AM

Had a good ride in this morning - beautiful sunny skies and birds singing along the TransCanada trail. I noticed my new computer's odometer broke 300 km's, and I've had it just over a month (and less than half of that was everyday riding). I've also noticed my avg. speed has increased from around 22km/hr to 25/26km/hr, even when I'm not feeling super fast. I can't complain about that too much, as I've only been commuting for a couple of weeks. I hope I improve that much every two or three weeks :)

Szpirit 05-29-03 06:12 AM

Today's commute is only my fifth so far because of the rainy weather we have been having here in southern Ontario. My route is 25 km round trip. There was relatively little traffic this morning (I leave at 6:45) and the weather was wonderful with blue skies. However, more rain is forecast for the afternoon.

Yesterday's commute was great although it started to rain about 15 min from home. Today, I noticed my energy level was less than ideal. The days that I don't ride, I am on my treadmill for 30 min in the morning and I still don't feel that I am in good shape. However, riding to work is so energizing.

So far, I have been able to keep my bike in my office. I think I spend more time gazing fondly at my bike and looking forward to the ride home than I do on my work!!

bradw 05-29-03 07:08 AM

My commute was OK, as it has been for the last few weeks.

Aside from the occassional threat of rain, the weather has been great. Mornings in the upper 40s or 50s, afternoons in the 60s to low 80s.

The traffic is light and the train rarely interferes with my commute.

I get to commute 3-5 times a week (about 11 to 12 mile round trip)and sometimes take a lap around Forest Park in the morning before heading in to the office.

Now if it would only stay this way the year round.

MI_rider 05-29-03 07:13 AM

First commute of the week because of broken spokes on the rear wheel. After a few days of relativly little riding I felt great this morning. I Felt fast and strong. I wish I could have rode for another hour instead of going to work. Plus it was supposed to rain today but it now looks like it isn't going to so that is a bonus.
I can't wait for the ride home.

Today was my first day using water bottles instead of my Camleback and I promptly missed the cage and dropped the bottle into traffic. Luckily, no one ran it over!

Lately, I've been counting the number of cyclists I see on my commute and came up with 32 this morning.

All in all, very enjoyable ride this morning; however, I must admit, I'm not looking forward to the HOT ride home. It was in the mid-80s this morning and should be around 100 F this afternoon on my way home.

Szpirit 05-29-03 08:37 AM

I'm planning on going to my LBS tonight to look for panniers to make my commute easier. I've been bungee wrapping my bulging backpack on my rack and it's a nuisance, especially if I need to get something from it.

Ed Holland 05-29-03 08:42 AM

Hi Folks
Great weather this morning. This is the second journey on my new commute and I'm loving it. Only problem is that my wife and I are putting so much time and effort into fixing up our new home that we are exhausted and a bit stressed most of the time. We are making great progress though.

All this work doesn't leave much energy left for cycling, but the relaxation side of riding, even commuting to work, is really priceless at the moment.

Cheers,

Ed

brennser 05-29-03 09:11 AM

aaah well

my patched rear tire which had held out for 1,000 miles finally gave out last night - and it was probably my fault - on the way home I couldn't maneuver in time to avoid a nasty pothole - hope I didn't damage my rim into the bargain

so no commute today which is fine as I'm going out after work

Paul L. 05-29-03 09:37 AM

Warm ride in. Tried my heart rate monitor and was surprised at how low my heart rate has gotten at my current commute pace. No wonder I am at a plateau! Anyway, as soon as I get used to this hot weather a little more I have work to do! Hopefully the forecast for thunder storms this afternoon will hold out and cool things off. Biking in 110 degrees is still better than not biking at all but still is less enjoyable than perhaps a bit more comfortable temperature!

Sailguy 05-29-03 09:51 AM

Nice ride. The weather is killer! I did catch a car collision today. Gave my report to the officer who handled it.

Andy Dreisch 05-29-03 10:16 AM

First ride this week. I've been doing a lot of running recently. Great tailwind. Took the hilly route. Zoomed along at 24-25 MPH most of the time ... then a flat. Changed it in record time (had a new tube) and still made it in about 5 minutes ahead of normal.

Mine'sAPint 05-29-03 10:46 AM

Beautiful weather this morning! I need to get better at judging the temperature though... I was going to set off in shorts and a long sleeve jersey, for some reason I decided at the last minute to put a short sleeve jersey over the top. I was sweating like crazy when I got to work, I think just the short sleeve would have done it

caloso 05-29-03 12:13 PM

Nice morning. Calm and very warm so the shorts and shortsleeved jersey were all I needed. The bike trail was fairly crowded today so I'm thinking that more folks are starting to bike commute. Nice to see.
