Freakin' weather...they said thunderstorms all day ( I don't like being a rolling lightening rod ), so I drove in and...nothing...I'm PO'd...I'll either ride when I get home or do some distance in the morning as I'm playing hookie tomorrow.

jpdesjar 08-28-08 07:19 AM

the weather has been great this week...this morning i decided to take on the big climb instead of riding my usual route...it felt good to climb and then descend, the lane for riding is pretty skinny so that part was challenging but it was fun

starla 08-28-08 07:25 AM

I took a week off due to some minor ulnar neuropathy (have since adjusted my grips and so far, so good) but was back on the bike day before yesterday. I can't believe how hard it was on me to sit out for just a week. I got out and walked, but it was just not the same. Did not do as much for my peace of mind and general mental state, never mind physical. I am *so* glad to be back on the bike. :)

Weather is slightly cooler in the mornings and afternoons now (low 70s and low to mid 90s) which makes a big difference.

MyPC8MyBrain 08-28-08 07:27 AM

Ugh, had to drive today for the first time in a couple months. Was really strange... and people drive like idiots. Much better attitude when I get to work after riding in :)

JR97 08-28-08 07:51 AM

Holy crap. I damn near got hit again at the same remote T intersection where I seem to always have an issue. Idiot blew right through the stop sign probably doing 35 or 40. And I know he knows it's there because he works at the biz that is 20 feet past the intersection. Dude got out of his car to unlock the gate and I was trying to catch up to him to ask him wtf and let him know I'll be reporting him next time. But when he saw me coming up he hurried and got in and drove off. So now I will be reporting him. Well, not him since I didn't get a plate being dark and and all, but the city needs to do something to tell motorists that there is a sign and there are bikes that use that intersection and that it is NOT a 3 way stop. Unbelievable.... I ride through major freeway and interstate highway on/off ramp areas in industrial land with semis and sh*t without a hitch. Yet this little T intersection in the middle of nowhere is going to do me in one of these days.

But other than that, the commute was chilly, dark the whole, and I had no energy after having humped in 30 lbs of stuff yesterday. I think I'm 1/2 riding 1/2 bussing tomorrow.

luckysnafu 08-28-08 08:02 AM

Left a little earlier this morning and avoided all the kids and buses. Not as cool as the past couple of days but still nice weather for this late in August.

Pig_Chaser 08-28-08 08:03 AM

omg omg omfg... i saw 2 bike commuters this morning. First one right in my neighborhood, i illuminated the dude with my headlights as he was crossing an intersection in front of me... excellent side visibility if you're on these formus man :thumb: The second commuter was coming into the city as i was leaving it. I haven't seen a bike commuter on this road, well, ever.
The sunrise this morning was unbelievable. It literally lit the entire sky.

LeftinFlint 08-28-08 08:09 AM

Today was the first day in 2 years of bike commuting (fair weather commuting) that I was yelled at by a car. "Get on the sidewalk." I didn't respond as nicely as I wanted to, which I didn't realize until the expletives were already out of my mouth. The passenger, head out window after they had passed signed to me the he wanted to give me a b-- job, or so it looked. I declined and suggested he service himself. So it goes. Maybe next time I'll be more composed.

Once in 2 years -- I can't complain.

KLW2 08-28-08 08:14 AM

Thunderstorms just before my ride so everything was wet...having to use my DIY MR16 headlights to see in the morning now...winter is getting closer....

pinkrobe 08-28-08 08:28 AM

'Twas a fine ride in. I think my tires are a little on the low side, as my sprint wan't what it usually is. I'll take care of it over the weekend...

jpdesjar 08-28-08 08:37 AM

/\dont you hate that?
trying to climb or sprint and feeling the front tire squish a little...checked my pressure last night and that made all the difference this morning

amit_shah25 08-28-08 08:53 AM

Pathetic. Had to drive in :-(

I mixed my route up a bit and today I saw 11 commuters. Eleven!!! I typically only see 1 or 2 on a good day. I think with it being dark, I could see them a lot easier flashing away. Out of the 10, 1 was in a black t-shirt no lights or reflectors and another had no lights and was going the wrong way. I had wanted to give him the road side for being an idiot, but he he was hugging the curb pretty tight on this no bike lane no shoulder section of road. A third had no lights crossing a busy street no where near the intersection so he could ride the wrong way. Weird.

BroadSTPhilly 08-28-08 09:13 AM

I almost got myself t-boned this morning. There is a set of too lights at Vine st. One governing the westbound traffic and one for the eastbound traffic. Usually the one for the westbound traffic turn red but you can still go as long as the one for the eastbound traffic is green. Well the chnaged the light timing so you can't do that anymore. So I shoot through thinking I was golden but I was not as the traffic started to flow. My fault. I will need to alter my behavior at the light.

neilfein 08-28-08 09:25 AM

No bike today, I walked to the train station. I have a gig right after work, and my percussionist/djembe player is picking me up to get there.

jterribili 08-28-08 10:35 AM

i have been lucky on my commutes this week - keep missing the heavy downpours we have been having. Fog was nasty this morning and 5 minutes after I left the house I found that I forgot to recharge my batteries for my Fenix - so visibility was not so great - good thing I know my route well enough to go it blindfolded!

On another note, I finally sent my 1.5 yr old Forte Campus pedals back to Performance Bike for their 100% guarantee replacement. They developed a very annoying squeak and were not working as well as they used to. I have been sucking using the stock pedals for the Sirrus - really miss the clipless! Efficiency has been greatly reduced - BOOO!

HardyWeinberg 08-28-08 10:57 AM

Nice ride in this morning. Bike traffic jam going home last night, 2 other guys riding around me running lights and sh*t but I kept passing them anyway I'm not sure how.

RB1-luvr 08-28-08 11:19 AM

walked to work in hiking boots again today. beautiful day in central CT again. Mt Washington Saturday - - I'm ready!

caloso 08-28-08 12:00 PM

Going to be 104F this afternoon but this morning was a beautiful 71F. Lovely.

DataJunkie 08-28-08 12:07 PM

85F here today. 55F on the ride in this morning.
Nothing amazing. Just another commute. More looking forward to this years final club ride this Saturday than anything. Weekends are now for the family but I am sneaking another ride in for the heck of it.

Big_e 08-28-08 02:02 PM

Still dark outside and cool. The regular chase by the two large strays at the corner. Their time is coming...real soon as a matter of fact (mwua-ha-ha-ha!). Half a mile into the ride, a car runs a stop sign and almost clobbers me. Using my momentum, I kicked his door hard and bounced off to regain my balance yelled colorful metaphors at him. He just gazed stupidly at me and drove on. Uneventful the rest of the way. The idiot this morning is not representative of the drivers in my part of town. I'm pretty proud of the drivers here in Oak Cliff. They seem to have a consideration for bicyclers for the most part.

kinda a little over cast on my way home but cool and no humidity.

Funny thing happend. I was approaching a yellow light that I knew I was gonna stop at, so I slowed down and stopped at the stop line right up against the curb. As the light turns Green for the other direction a dude in a yellow Jersey (mellow johnny not Hi-viz) comes through the intersection at full speed on the wrong side of the road and leaning in to make a left. That means he's about to turn into a stopped me

luck was with me and he looked up and saw me and jammed on the brakes in time to swerve onto the correct side of the road, and he says to me "that was almost a crash" very matter-of-factly. I think I might have had a mini anyuerism trying to comprehend how dumb that statement was because All I could think to say was "Yeah that wouldn't be a problem if you were flying on the correct side of the street". I'm usually better with words.

goddamn i am such a tough guy crusader.

Got kinda warm on the way home, mid 80's. Very nice ride home. Air in all my tires and not idiots today. Have to leave home by 0500 in the morning. actually looking forward to the ride.

morrowman 08-28-08 06:42 PM

I made 2 bad moves this week - tried a new saddle, Selle San Marco Aspide from my brooks b17 narrow, ass hurts. 2nd, a friend offered me a ride today and I was about halfway home (10 miles to go) and I said "no I got my own, ride, it has 2 wheels." Well i ended up getting a flat on my old faithful weelset.

 That's a killer flat.

darkcanuck2 08-28-08 08:01 PM

Things took a turn for the dodgy this week in Toronto... my regular route down the Don Valley to the lake to get downtown has been disrupted for the past couple days as police shut the path down to investigate a grisly murder scene in a derelict train yard.

I am welcoming the slightly cooler weather these days! Everyone seems to be worried the summer is over but to me the fall is by far my favourite time on the bike.

robinthehippie 08-28-08 08:11 PM

Great rides both ways, saw the sunrise on my way in and sunset on my way home.

I talked with a Serious Roadie at a stoplight. Sometimes I feel like I should keep up with the quicker cyclists... not today, not after a 12 hour shift. I told him to have a nice ride, and slowed down even more. Also talked to a little old man who crossed the street in front of me, he said it was nice that I waited for the light (it's a "yield to peds on red" turn) and told me to have a nice night. Cool people today.

Pig_Chaser 08-28-08 08:22 PM

It was one of those commute, i felt like i had a tailwind no matter which way i went. I ran an errand for work on the way home, a precious detour that added a few k's to the trip. I should charge the company milage, but i won't.

Rodeo 08-29-08 05:16 AM

No commute last two days due to rain. I don't have fenders yet. Someday.

Big_e 08-29-08 05:44 AM

Great ride! A little warm this morning and still dark. I took my mtb this morning to get more of a workout and to chase the strays. The usual stray dogs didn't chase me this morning, just layed there on the corner and looked at me so I kept going. About 2 miles in the ride to work I see another commuter for the first time! He was going really fast in my direction but I crossed the street and kept going so I didn't get a good look at his bike. My mtb bike goes really fast now that I put on those Bontrager slicks!
