27 mi RT today, very nice conditions, cool and calm with clouds rolling through. Great views across the vast megalopolis at sunset when coasting down from the hills on my way home. A Super weekend to all.

Unusual Saturday commute for me. I used the opportunity to switch modes from my Sirrus commuter war horse to my Roubaix steed. Left at 4:00 AM and stayed completely on roads (I normally use some MUPs when cage traffic is high). I counted 8 cars in 18 miles!

Shaved 10 minutes off my PB time to work with the route mod and upgraded transport. I'm looking forward to a ride home in the warm Sun later today.

- Sunday is a work day this week
- Great commute right up to the very last corner: sheer ice
- Took the corner very wide, and slowed down
- Not slow enough. Bike went out from under me, landed flat on my back
- MacBook in my messenger bag
- MacBook now has a large crack in the case

All in all:

Fun fun fun on loose broken up snow on top of hard packed snow. wonderful on the way in, wonderful on the way home this morning. Rides like that are what it's all about!

Whoohoo! This morning is going to be a rerun of last Sunday. I got off at 7 AM and got to make tire tracks through about four inches of fresh, unmarked snow all the way home before any cars were out trying to do me in. Hadn`t snowed since then until tonight- I just looked outside and we have about three inches and counting. One hour and five minutes to go... WHEEE!

It was raining hard all last night, and was still going when I got up. So I was expecting a wet ride.

But magically it eased and then stopped just as I set off, and held off for the whole journey. Not that I mind the rain, but it's nice to not have to worry about getting my stuff dry for the ride home.

Also as I got my bike out of the shed I noticed a huge spiderweb between the trees at the bottom of the garden. It had water droplets hanging off it all over, and looked rather beautiful.

Nice ride today. Very little ice remains on the road. Actually, I wish I'd had a helmet cam set up... it would have been a cool video. Just enough driver craziness, and it was fun to ride behind the motor scooter carrying giant bags of noodles. I've got an old-but-usable helmet lying around, and a mini-tripod. Now I just need to buy some duct tape

The rain wasn't so kind this evening - it was raining really hard for the whole ride home. Kind of fun; you get completely soaked in the first 30 seconds, and then just enjoy the experience. The temperature is about 20C, so it's not cold.

There was water just running down the streets in some places. Only problem is peds with umbrellas not looking where they are going, and crazy car drivers + wet brakes = more scary than usual. But a fun ride nevertheless. Seems from the forecast it's going to rain pretty much for the whole of February. Man, this is a wet summer.

Cold and clear commute, -5C and calm. Snow made that creaky noise under the wheels. The bike needs some work though, felt really slow and heavy. Probably a mixture of the chain needing oil (ran out over a week ago) and tires being underinflated. Pretty soon it'll be light out for the morning commute.

I love the international flavor of all this!

Outside of Washington DC, it's mid-winter but you'd never know it. 38'F (about 3'C) with a very mild wind made for a picture perfect commute this morning. Traffic even lighter than usual for the pre-6AM hour--I suppose due to folks staying up watching the Super Bowl.

Forecast has the high temps in the mid-60s for part of this week. This is February!?!

It was colder than I thought it would be this morning. -24C doesn't sound that bad, but it's pretty chilly. I also got out of the house later than I wanted to, and my legs were tired from yesterday's training ride. I got to work mostly on time, but I'm tired.

I hear ya on the tired thing, pinkrobe. Rode my rollers Saturday and had a hockey game last night where I logged about 45 minutes of ice time so my legs are dead. Didn't feel cold to me, though, which is nice.

Uneventful ride this morning.

My January was pathetic. Between the kid being sick several days, my boss being out a lot (allowing me to work from home), and my general laziness, I only put in ~100 miles for the month.

Forecast calls for 74F tomorrow and 72 on Wednesday. Sweet!

Trombone, would you mind sending some of that rain this way? Over 50% of North Carolina is at "extreme drought", the highest possible rating, and no end in sight.

First day of commuting to my new office! 11 easy miles to bus stop - 5 min on the bus (avoiding a nasty 3 miles on a freeway shoulder and construction zone). Beautiful day - the rain has stopped, big white clouds, about 55 degrees. Chit chatted in the elevator on the way up; as I got off at my floor I overheard one person say to her neighbor - "Wow, she looked so HAPPY for a Monday"

True!

37F/3C with a brisk north wind that made it feel a bit chillier. But I remembered to wear both my gloves and liners today. Actually had to shield my eyes going east... what the heck is that bright thing in the sky? Oh, yeah, the sun.

I must confess that I know very little about Iceland, but I always imagined that it was much colder there in the winter. Is -5C warm for this time of year?

Tired also, had a weekend of riding around on my temporary fixed conversion, nice easy gear (42/17) enough to be able to not use the brake much, but took a lot more out of me than I'd have thought. Had lots of snow related fun anyway

Riding on my roadie this morning felt very weird, coasting, etc.

My son broke his ankle, so I'm dropping him at school in the car now. No riding for me for at least 2 or 3 weeks. This will be the longest I'll have been off the bike at once since going essentially full time in 2005.

Yes, normally he rides the bus, and it's still not out of the question, but his route to school involves transferring busses, and the transfer point is mayhem of 500+ students swapping around between a couple dozen busses in a parking lot, all carrying backpacks, and crutches on ice isn't great either.

SNOW!!! I haven't been able to ride since the 9th of December. I cannot believe the amount of snow we've received. Good for water, bad for my weight.

Ride home this aftn felt alot cooler than the 49f indicated. But it still felt nice not having to wear all of the cold weather gear. No balaclava, no shoe covers, just a single layer. Got me thinking about Springtime. Whoa! Hold on there, we still have February to go thru. Expecting thunderstorms tom'rw. I wonder what that will be like. Come on March. Ride this morning was real nice. 37f, no wind, made good time riding in.......Tomrrow my ride in will be thoughts of Sheldon and his family.

got home at about 3:30AM after driving on the highway for 6 hours... then got up at 7 for work. riding a bike is hard on 3 hours of sleep. Ironically it's the only thing that wakes me up in the morning, way better than coffee.

Snow in the evening! A little scary because the wind was blasting as well! Morning was just flurries but came down hard in the PM. I think it will melt though! It's the desert and the Southwest --- what do you expect!

Today's 27 mi bike commute is in memory of Sheldon Brown. This is what he would want us to do, a guy who knew all along that bicycles are not all about the speed or the bling. Rest in peace my friend.

Iceland is warmer than you'd imagine. It's an island so it's moderated by the ocean, which is further warmed by the Gulf Stream. For January and February we get anywhere between -15C to 5C or so. Certainly not cold enough to impress our Canadian friends or even the Norwegians. Even Massachusetts easily gets colder. I've lived in Boston, Edmonton (Canada) and Trondheim (Norway) among other places and all had colder winters than Iceland. We do however get more wind than these places and our summers aren't nearly as nice. Here's more information if you want.
Oh, today's commute. I oiled the chain and inflated the tires (too much). Bike certainly felt lighter but the ride was harsh, grip was severely compromised and where the snow wasn't really well packed, the tires cut through where they would float on top yesterday. Probably the sweet spot is somewhere between the pressure I had yesterday and the one I had today. I'll let some air out before I go home and see how it works.

Not super fast or strong this morning, but the balmy temps and thick fog made the ride a lot of fun. The G.F. is going to pick me up early today for a doctor's appointment so my ride will spend the night in the office.
