I do think it could be real dangerous when it's whipping around heavily. I've been pushed from the left and tried to hold myself upright. Then when a car cuts me close on the left it tends to block the wind and I find myself trying not to steer into the vehicle.

The mixture of wind and bum-holes not giving adequate space can be deadly. Just be careful.

I had the same thought yesterday on my (very windy) ride home. The bike felt very snaky, like the back end was fishtailing even though I wasn't braking or anything. One down-side to panniers: I've found that in cross winds they act like a rudder. :twitchy: Just another reason to take the lane.

substructure, I thought my jelly-legs problem was just my own, but if we both have it maybe it's a result of wind and cold (and a certain amount of overuse, but at least if I have other reasons I can avoid taking the time off the bike I know I need).

Not quite as cold as yesterday, mid 40's I think. Not a bad ride but, I've got to get a new jacket. The zipper on my last one broke over the summer and I've yet to replace it. I've been adding layers and using winter gloves/skull cap/woold socks but, there's nothing like a good shell to protect againts the wind. I had been thinking of selling my current ride in favor of a 29er but realized that I like the "fast commuter" option that I've got now with the Crosscheck. So, I'm soon to install a Chris King headset, new Salsa skewers and seatpost, and continue to bling it up a little. I guess I'll have to swap out the slicks soon as well (they've got plenty of wear and many, small cuts).

Snowfall up here near Erie! I road my girlfriends stock Mongoose MTB. Its a great ride, but has no fenders, so I got soaked.

Anyway of keeping slush off the BB shell?

stevemtbr 10-29-08 08:24 AM

Took the shorter off road route home yesterday. Temps in the high 50's and the trails are getting very dusty and we need some good rain/snow. After daylight savings the New Trek 8000 will be put up as my main commuter bike and my official commuter bike with lights, fenders etc will be brought out for the winter commute. Pics will follow shortly.

Got honked at, chased him down... it's documented in the a&s thread under the 'what do you do if you get honked at?' thread. Pretty anti-climatic though.

Really warm this morning. I was [am] very tired, and my shoulder hurts. I want a nap followed by a coffee.

martybucs 10-29-08 08:57 AM

38º this morning and a little cloudy and windy. Not bad, though, got a late start and traffic was really light.
I installed some airless tires last week and I have about 30 miles on them. Increased rolling resistance and some unstableness at higher speeds. (Over 20 mph and the tires get pretty squirmy feeling).

jpdesjar 10-29-08 09:30 AM

didn't get to ride the past couple days since i was on a retreat out of town so it was great to get back on the saddle this morning, it was refreshing. looks like the rest of the week should be sunny so i am looking forward to getting some more miles in...it should be interesting biking home from work next week after we change the clocks, i guess i need to put the head light back on the bike

HardyWeinberg 10-29-08 11:02 AM

Beautiful fall sunrise, leaves were glowing.

Tobias Greenich 10-29-08 11:06 AM

Made decent enough time, there was a light wind. The weird thing is, my calves felt... floppy, is the only word I can think of. It was odd.

On the plus side, the bus driver and I were at it again. She kicks ass. :D

dynohubrider 10-29-08 11:28 AM

Golden autumn morning, so still i could hear the whirr of my Dynohub and the faint ticking of my well oiled AW 3 speed (genuine Sturmey Archer oil no less!) on a nice flat section cruising in 3rd. Lights are brighter since removing my extra taillight bulb but will have to get my front wheel on a test rig and the old voltmeter out (If i can find it amongst the mountain of tools and S-A spares!) as i think a pre 1970's Dynohub should be kicking out a bit more than that!

Blue skies smiling at me.
Nothing but blue skies do I see.
Blue bird singing her song
Nothing but blue skies all day long.

bdcheung 10-29-08 11:46 AM

terrible.

SouthFLpix 10-29-08 12:08 PM

No commute today since I have to pick-up a gorgeous Russian model for a photo shoot. I'm not complaining.

tarwheel 10-29-08 02:14 PM

BTW, there has been a lot of talk in this thread about glasses fogging up in cold weather. This morning I tried one of the suggestions that's been made -- dish washing soap -- and it worked great. I just took a very small drop of soap and rubbed it on both sides of my lenses using no water. I wiped off the excess soap with a tissue and then rubbed the lenses clear with the lens cleaning cloth that came with my glasses. I was somewhat worried before the final buffing with the lens cloth because my glasses were all blurry until then, but it worked. My glasses didn't fog up at all during my commute, which was a very cold morning, even though I got caught by just about every red light along the way.

jpdesjar 10-29-08 02:16 PM

that's interesting, i will have to give that a go, thanks

Bit damp the last few days; the spring seems to consist of alternately very hot days and drizzle.

Still, the fixed gear is going OK; I've got used to it now so I feel a lot more confident.

That said, I was going to ride the other bike this morning for varoius reasons, but when I got it out of the shed the front tyre was flat. Didn't have time to fix it, so I rode the fixie anyway.

Thomas Brock 10-29-08 04:58 PM

The ride home was surprisingly smooth. Very little wind. It was quite nice, actually.

Grim 10-29-08 05:24 PM

Have to try that dish soap trick tomorrow. Can't pull the baklava over my nose without serious fog problem.

Ride today was quite nice despite it being cold enough to deposit frost on the cars. Didn't wear the baklava just the warm beanie. Chilled my cheeks pretty good. Pulled my head in my jacket collar like a turtle.

Scared the hell out of a Kinder care bus driver. Half blocking the bike lane with the bus and had to duck the side mirror Bus had no kids on it and I screamed to "get out of the bike lane" as I came up on the door. Heard her yelp! :roflmao2:

Ride home was quite nice. Lighter traffic then normal in a couple spots.

Tobias Greenich 10-29-08 06:50 PM

Hooooooooooooooooo Ya. Ride home was definitely much better. Firstly, there were loads of cyclists out, and I'm not sure why. It felt pretty random. Nice to pass by them, though.

Secondly, I was actually able to keep up with traffic a good portion of the time. Might have something to do with how much of it there was today, but I'll take my victories where I can. :D

Feeling good!

Home to Berkeley to meet a client, about 8 miles and cold. I stopped halfway to get breakfast. After meeting client I rode BART to Concord where I loaded bike in partners van and we headed off to Bethel Island. Stopped for breakfast #2 on the way. Rode bike from Bethel Island to Pittsburg, about 36 miles the way I went. Met partner again and we did some work in Concord. Rode his van back to BART and got off at McArthur Station and rode home (stopping at Whole Foods for two pints of Damnation Ale) about 5 miles.

About a 49 mile commute today. Lots of eggs, sausage, hashbrowns, grits, cheese, and lemonade. :)

funrover 10-29-08 10:58 PM

Today was beautiful!

12bar 10-30-08 02:55 AM

Record cold yesterday morning 44 F and it only got up to 65 F for a high and there wasn't a cloud in the sky, now this is riding weather.

Big_e 10-30-08 05:26 AM

It's dark when I head out in the mornings. Kinda warm about upper 50's. I rode the Gary Fisher mtb and sported my new visi-bag . It worked great! Real roomy and can be seen by headlights from faraway. Makes me go faster too! :D

First frost and freeze this morning in my part of Carolina, with a low of 30F. However, it actually felt warmer than the past few mornings because there was no wind for a change. It has been very windy all week until today. I had a very pleasant ride to work and dressed perfectly for the cold -- I was warm but barely broke a sweat. Yesterday afternoon was another story. Even though the temperature was fairly warm yesterday afternoon (55F), it felt much colder due to a stiff NW wind that I fought all the way home.

dcrowell 10-30-08 06:40 AM

Cold, high 20s, dark clear skies, no wind. It was beautiful. I stayed warm... except my feet. I'm gonna try to find some wool socks... or get rid of the clipless until spring.

I had a driver give me the thumbs-up on the bridge. Overall, a good ride.

harleyfrog 10-30-08 06:52 AM

The bed was waaaaaay too warm and cozy this morning. Slept late and drove to work this morning. *ack* Well, there is still tomorrow.

vtjim 10-30-08 07:09 AM

Slow! Well, slow for me. Stayed up way too late last night. Had a bit too much beer. Still a bit jet lagged (from New Zealand - 17 hour difference). So it all caught up to me this morning. Dragged myself along at 13MPH most of the way. 15 if the tailwind hit me right. :o

I saw exactly one person on the 5 miles of MUP. A trail-regular who walks a lot. Temps in the upper 20sF. Dry.

VolGirl 10-30-08 07:43 AM

Nippy out, but was pretty comfortable except my shirt wouldn't stay tucked so cold air got to my back. And I should have worn the glove liners. Cold digits. Should be a much warmer ride home though.
