STUDS TODAY! First snow/ice conditions that warranted the studs and was super glad to have them. I took the MUP in and #1- it was plowed! #2 Lots of patches of ice and black ice. Also the wooden bridges without the studded tires would have been deadly. In fact, I'd forgotten about the icy conditions and hit the 1st wooden bridge pretty fast and would have gone down hard but the studs held great.
On the ride home though a scary incident. I was a bit paranoid along Nonantum Road where a car had shot across the bike path and into the Charles River on the weekend. Sure enough as I rode home tonight there was a big black SUV in the middle of the bike path facing in my direction, it's front grill crumpled and lying on the bike path behind the car was a man- on his cell phone! He was surrounded by 3 other guys, whose cars were parked in the road along the path. The guy had hit some black ice spun out of control and onto the bike path. As I said in another post, it would be a lot safer out there if everyone left their cars at home in the ice and snow and rode a bike. |
Inspired by the crazy commuters in Bike Forums. I decided to commute to school today in a crazy rain storm. I live in SoCal so we don't get that much rain so I had to commute just for the fun of it. Just put on my beanie, bubble jacket, no fenders, my mp3 player.
I gotta say wat a ride! Drivers looking at me and think Im crazy. No bike commuter in site but it was damn refreshing. Would I do it again? Yes! if I had enough clothes. Like the commuting experts here in BF. Its easy to commute when you got the right clothing. Thanx BF! |
Foggy about 30 degrees. I was warm as toast in my new Showers Pass Elite jacket and Toasty Feet inserts. I had my new P7 in strobe mode on the front and my Planet Bike blinkie on the back. My coworkers that saw me on the road commented about the high visibility of both lights. BF is so cool

Mild. 36F/2C with no wind to speak of. Knickers and sleeveless T under my jacket (another Showers Pass customer :D ).
Guess I'm getting acclimated--had I stepped out to a morning like this in August, it would've been a mad scramble back indoors to put on every piece of gear I own! |
17ºF when i left the house...streets weren't too bad at all after the snowfall yesterday, although there were sections that were not plowed enouch forcing me to ride in the road a bit more but i was comfortable doing that and no one gave me a hard time about it...riding fixed in the snow and slush is really fun and allows me to control the bike really well...cross tires rock

I actually felt slow today. Maybe it was the new detour or that i left off a layer. And when a couple riders started passing me in the final 2 miles (thank you black Surly with tons of yellow reflective stickers), I noticed i was cruising at 15 and kicked it up to about 18. Either way, i made the commute in average time.
Now if I can only get the office mgr to turn off the freaking AC (wtf!?), i can change my clothes... |
My plans this morning keep getting screwed up. I'd hoped to take my new roadie out for a ride before leaving for work, but The Kid woke us up too late for me to have time. OK. Next I was supposed to give blood this morning at 9 on my way in. I arrived at the building to learn that they'd forgtotten to bring the blood pressure cuffs! They told me I could either wait about 30 minutes or "come back in a little while". Uh, my building's about a mile away....you want me to go shower, work for a while, then change back into my gear, ride back here, give blood, go back to work and change again?
Told them I'd try to leave early and stop by on my way home. I think this blood drive today will be a bust for them. |
Not too bad here in chicago today. It was about 15 degrees when left my appartment this morning. The side roads were still covered in snow/slush. Thankfully the city of chicago plows the lake shore path. It was pretty smooth sailing from rogers park / andersonville to down town. Sunny skies now but we are suppose to get several inches of snow and ice tonight :(
|
Below 20 but no too bad with ski pants and layers.
The Nexus hub keeps freezing though. Hmmm... http://i68.photobucket.com/albums/i2...-2008_0166.jpg |
Went by bus & train today. :(
After a glorious couple days' commute with studs, the slog home yesterday was just miserable--just too much snow & slush to get a grip! 10-15 cm, and of course, piled higher and rutted the farther out to the edge you get. Back in the saddle once things get a little less insane. (For Vancouver, that is.) |
Am reading all these replies about how cold it is. brrr... in Atlanta today it's 64 degrees! am having a dickens of a time dressing for the right weather on these commutes. back to summer clothes.
|
Another snow-day for schools today, so home again with the kids. Commuted with them to school on the toboggan for some sledding. Would be surprised if there is school tomorrow.

I made a couple of videos of deer on the way to work this morning. Terrible quality, but you can see the deer reasonably well.

It's summer here. Commuted in under blue skies, sunshine and 23C (73F) temperatures.

Eerie commute this morning, but I loved it. I had to get to work earlier than usual, so I left my house a little before 6AM. I took my usual route, which starts on an MUP that runs along a major road here in Montgomery County. There must have been a power outage or something because EVERY traffic light was out. It was pitch black, but a strangely bright half-moon lit my way. When I came into a neighborhood I usually cut through, I saw a fox run right across the road in front of me. Made it to the Metro station and was in DC by 6:30 AM. Once in DC, I meandered my way through the city as I usually do. The early hour combined with the approaching holiday meant that the streets were pretty quiet. It was great day for biking through DC. As I made my way to my office, (near Capitol Hill) I caught my usual view of the Capitol building just as the sun was rising. It was a bit chilly but no wind which made the ride really nice. It was a good day for a bike ride.

I drove this morning. Probably a good thing I did so. When I was inspecting my bike tonight I noticed a bubble of inner tube sticking through a tear in the sidewall of my rear tire. Oh well, guess I know what I'll be buying tomorrow. :notamused:
|
rolled in again on the studs today. A little slower than usual but not bad. Big snow due tomorrow!
Fortunately, I've got the day off- snow day! |
We're suppose to get 8-14" of snow starting any minute and snow the next 7 days...oh boy:( trainer here I come.
|
Fog as thick as pea soup. Made for a very spooky kinda ride.
|
Here are the projected snow totals for the next week. Today, so far 9.5" on the ground 3 or 4 more to come before noon. 6 more on Saturday night, and then another round on Tuesday. Haven't had a chance to ride outside since Thanksgiving because of crappy roads due to the 20" we've had thus far not including today. I've put on 200 miles on the trainer but its just not the same. There was a poll recently about whether trainer miles count, well I'm counting them! I have no choice. Hopefully the new year will bring better conditions.

Fogged out again, for the fourth day this week. I drove because I tried biking to work one of those days and visibility was very poor. Today the fog was even thicker. We rarely get fog, so this weather is kind of baffling. The ironic thing is the temperatures have been milder here than they have been in weeks, yet I was only able to ride to work two days this week. I'm off next week, so I've only got three more potential commuting days left in 2008.

had a fun ride this morning, it was a lot like yesterday's ride except this morning more of the bike lane was cleared so i was pleased...i had to slap the side of a truck that was creeping towards me and sort of squishing me to the side of the road...i don't think i startled the driver too badly
looks like the snow will not start fallling until i am just about to leave for work so i will get to ride through it! |
Beautiful ride in today with temps in low 60's and headwinds about 7mph.
|
Damp and foggy...At least it was warmish (mid-50s).

One of my three-year-olds has speech therapy on Fridays, so the other has half an hour with Daddy in the morning. He loves helping me with the bike, so we cleaned the chain (he turns the pedals while I hold the chain cleaning tool) and I drilled him on what turns what in the drive train. He no longer says ROCKET! when I ask him what the chain turns, which I kind of miss, but SPROCKET! is pretty cute too.
So I glided to work today with a clean drive train, big snowflakes starting to fall, David Sedaris on the iPod. I don't know if I'll be able to ride home tonight, since I haven't been able to afford studs or knobbies and the Marathon Pluses are pretty near slick, but the ride in was nice. We'll see. |
First ride with the M & G's. Thought I would have to stay seated on the significant hills but no, the traction was amazing. I love these things. Worth every penny!
Otherwise 4 degrees f and comfy thanks to all the info learned here. :) |
alright, I cant download a pic. Any suggestions?
|
Mellow ride on the FG this morning. I spent an hour doing intervals on the trainer in the garage before breakfast so it was nice to just sit and spin and watch the city go by. Looks like the storm has passed east for now. I hear I-80 is closed at the summit, but there are patches of blue sky to the southwest.
