Like essiemyra above, it was a little cooler today as well (5C) and a bit windy (17kph E) but my riding time was decent. Unlike yesterday when the unlit 1km portion of the ride was so dark that I wove back and forth on the dirt road not being able to see well where the road edge ended and the grass started, today, with the overcast sky and consequent city-light effect, it was much better.

Yesterday morning's forecast for yesterday afternoon was 13C and mostly sunny: well it was mostly sunny but 9C and about a 15kph wind so I started my ride, dressed down for the supposed 13C warmth and had to try to warm up in the cool headwind. After about 1km, I arrived at the dirt road that is protected from the wind and was able to get some warmth generated before I got back out into the headwind again.

Tomorrow's forecast is a 10C morning with a 19C sunny afternoon, I'll be dressing down like fletchh above (without the top knot, not enough hair).

I remember why I quit riding two years ago now. I'm averaging a flat tire about every 100-130 miles. It's been different bikes, different tires, and most of them different reasons but it's extremely frustrating.

Best flat resistant tire I've owned is the Specialized Armadillo, 2nd would be the Conti-Gatorskin..

Right here with you in Baltimore, weather is super sweet, everybody is out!! :D

Super sweet ride yesterday, however, right when I had geared all up, and taking my bike out of its cube, I looked and the front tire is flat. No problem, take the bike into my cube, pull out my spare innertube, take off wheel, replace tube, pump up tire with mini pump, put wheel back on, and come to find out that having a flat this way, gave me some extra joy!! :D

This morning, I decided to take the same bike. An 89 Centurion Ironman Master..Weather feels like low 70s. Not complaining. A fast swish to the job.. Made sure I grabbed another spare tube and put it in my backpack too. Now, looking for the sweet ride home this evening.. Might take the long way too.. ;)

35F/2C and clear skies this morning. A bit foggy. My mirror fogged up when I got close to Lake Champlain.

I decided to take the MUP today, and the road that gets me to it was closed about 50 yards from the MUP. :twitchy: I had to dismount, walk around the barriers, and then get back on and ride to the MUP. Some sort of construction going on. Nobody working yet, fortunately.

Great weather continues. Another beautiful sunrise over the Potomac this morning.Wouldn't mind it a few degrees cooler, especially in the afternoon. Today's supposed to be near 80°F. Still beats July and August. ;-)

Get in some extra commuting miles this evening as I'll be attending poll worker training. Should be a pleasant 4 mile round trip to the center where the city election office is doing the training.

tarwheel 10-24-12 07:38 AM

Last commute of the week because I'm taking off work on Thursday and Friday, but I managed to ride each work day as we have had ideal weather lately. My legs are tired from all the riding I've been doing, but they will get a break this weekend due to family visiting from out of town.

arsprod 10-24-12 07:46 AM

This morning's ride... dark with short periods of light. Looking forward to the time change!

JPinWI 10-24-12 07:48 AM

Cloudy, foggy, 60+ degrees put me back in shorts and a tshirt for the ride in. A fresh set of rechargeable batteries in the rayovac helped it cut through the darkness. Another GREAT day for biking to work.

For years I've been a fair-weather commuter. Today was my first foul-weather commute. 45º F (7º C) and pouring rain.

I learned two things today:

1. Water-resistant pants would have made the commute more pleasant.
2. I should have brought an extra pair of socks to work.

first time commuting in while

My 89 Volvo has left our family high and dry a couple times the past few months and we needed a newer reliable car. (it won't start or it will turn itself off while driving)

So right around my birthday, my wife and I bought an 09 Honda Civic. It has been fun to drive a new car (20 years newer) to and from work for the the past couple of raining and cold weeks. PLUS it has averaged 31 miles per gallon

I have wanted my bike to ride home some evenings (mid 70's) but not wanted to ride to work in 40 's and very humid/ cold.

BUT ...the weather for this week has been 50F in the morning and 80F in the afternoons.

I rode to work today and have nothing pressing in the evenings so I am hoping to commute the rest of the week by bike.

Welp, I had a close call a couple days ago. Construction takes the road down to a single lane in one direction so I need to merge and take the lane. No big deal, and its not a fast road so I'm keeping pace with the cars (about 30kph), or at least I thought. The road shifts and widens a bit and I don't adjust my line so now I'm a little more the right.

The cab behind me figured that was the perfect time to pass me, about 8 inches away and then stop. Close enough for me to wipe out and rip up my hand. This is bad enough, but what utterly blew my mind is this was all so he could line up behind the other cars idling at the red light. That's right, this was over one car length. At least I had the opportunity go up and absolutely unload on the driver, read the plates and smear my bloody hand on his hood. His fare must have terrified.

Lesson learned and I'm needing new bar tape...

The good news everything is great since then. Everybody has been playing nice.

First sub-zero (celcius)commute of the season, I was not properly dressed, Brrrrrrrr!

groovestew 10-24-12 08:52 AM

A cool -4C/25F, and a little breezy. I haven't been riding enough recently, and I'm starting to feel it.

I spent a few days in the Montreal area last week, and while I spent most of the time bunkered in the hotel working, I did manage to get out for a walk in the downtown area for an afternoon. I was pretty impressed with how many cyclists I saw, and how many bikes in general there were around, including the Bixi bike share racks.

Yalc 10-24-12 09:09 AM

Today was fun, I have been adding mileage in for the strava challenge and to train for a 300 mile credit card tour in 3 weeks, basically because I am dumb. But I was 5mins faster this morning than yesterday, and I am feeling great. The extra time in the saddle is hard to make up for with sleep and food!

But the ride was great.

gecho 10-24-12 09:23 AM

-2C and a good tailwind for the eastward part of my ride. The roads dried off overnight and there was only a small amount of avoidable ice patches. There were many migrating geese in the park again today.

The city started paving the extension of the MUP before yesterday's snow. I saw them out again today, but I'm not sure if they'll be paving in this cold weather.

Sounds like my commute in this morning, although I have water resistant tights, and the small gap between my shoes and tights doesn't get wet unless it's a real downpour (commuter is recumbent). I do need to find something better to get the rain to run off my glasses, though. I hate the thought of riding without eye protection, but I could barely see through the rain this morning. They aren't fogging up, so that's working, but I think I need to Rain-X my morning glasses.

wphamilton 10-24-12 11:02 AM

I feel for the commuters facing snow, ice and cold rain today but I've got to say it's been really nice here, dry upper 40's in the morning and 70-80 on the way home. I went out for lunch today in gorgeousfall sunshine, just cool enough that I didn't perspire in my office attire.

While I like being the intrepid extreme weather commuter as much as the next guy I'd be just as happy for this to hold up all winter - and honestly it might, most of it :)

Yalc 10-24-12 12:08 PM

Oh I also got a coworker riding to work now. He saw me doing it and wanted to join in the fun!

Bluish Green 10-24-12 08:36 PM

I think I experienced a first (for me) today... I commuted eastbound in the morning with a SSW 8mph wind kind of behind me, and commuted westbound in the evening with a SSE 12mph wind kind of behind me. Tailwinds both ways!! Woo hoo!

Tomorrow night the forecast has me riding in T-storms into a predicted 20mph W wind, so the pendulum of karma swings back tomorrow... but today was great.

caloso 10-24-12 09:09 PM

Came out to find a flat tire. Not just a flat, the tire was partially blown off the rim. Couldn't find anything in the tire or on the rim--weird.

Mr. Hairy Legs 10-24-12 10:23 PM

I've actually been enjoying the unpredictable weather this week. Every commute is different than the last one.

I'm sensing Seasonal Affective Disorder kicking in with some of my co-workers lately. I'm not feeling it at all as I've maintained my cycling habit, rain or... lots of rain. A more effective antidepressant does not exist!

fletchh 10-25-12 04:45 AM

Nice and warm at 62f (17c). There was some fog hanging over, but not too much reaching the ground.

essiemyra 10-25-12 05:25 AM

It was a few degrees cooler this morning 35f as I went through town this morning, though I was ready for it. I had a warmer pair of gloves and all my cold weather gear. So it was a nice uneventful ride under clear starry skies.
