Beautiful ride this morning. Colder for sure 50's/60's, offshore winds, tons of sunshine (with the time change), and it was crystal clear. No fog. My body felt sluggish almost the entire way though.
Snapped a pic of the bay on my way in. |
Exercised the franchise on the way to the office this morning.

It warmed up to 5C by the end of my ride and I was very sweaty. The poly base layer I wear doesn't stretch much and can be difficult to remove when it is wet. The Pugsley takes more energy to pedal, which I don't mind. My legs should adjust to it in a few weeks, and come spring I should be quick on my road bike.
The wind has been flipping between NW and SE a lot lately. I lucked out on yesterday's ride home catching it during the transition when it was fairly week. |
Man, this motor does not work well in the cold. :( I barely kept up with the two riders ahead of me up the first hill on my commute, then watched them pull away as I was trying to catch my breath. It was only low-mid 40sF here this morning, which isn't bad compared to what some of you are doing, but it's hard on this Az native.
Ride home won't be much warmer, and it'll probably be raining pretty good. Think I'll take the 9 mile route home (I got a nice choice of routes: 4.5, 8, 12, 14) and make up the difference at the gym. |
My $2.69 Jersey gloves, the insulated ones, held up in the 28f morning. 53f this aftn.

Another heat wave this week. 85-90f.

Two San Diego sunrises from before the time change:

Well, my commute is more a training ride in the mornings now...since I no longer have a "work" to commute to. Rode to the polls this morning, in the rain. Cold and wet, come on summertime!
|
Strange one for me...I have a ride home commute to report on in the morning. Since it's election night I was at the office from 3pm-3am...had a cold windy ride home through deserted DC. Kinda cool to be on the streets after everyone has gone home on election night.
|
the cycle lanes are much more empty now that the temp is hovering around 0C.
|
first commute in 2 weeks due to a head cold and followed by sandy. very glad to be back. i was surprised by how much sunlight i had this morning thanks to daylight savings. i dressed perfectly for the 37 degree weather too.

I did not take my bike today, for two reasons, the first is my right leg is bothering me, and the knee more so. I need a total knee replacement on that one but am not willing to do it yet, so I thought since it is going to storm this afternoon(second reason) give the knee a break and let it rest for two days.

Bike computer showed 21F/-6C under clear skies this morning. Nice ride. I took the scenic route. Lots of waterfowl floating near the shore of Lake Champlain. The water is warm so they like it.
I had to chuckle as I was watching people arrive at work from their cars. Hunched over, hands stuffed in pockets, looking cold, and they're wearing winter coats. Here I come in my lightweight nylon jacket, half unzipped, feeling like it's a nice spring day. :p Beards... No, if it gets cold enough for that, I wear a balaclava, and it has to get colder than this. Single-digits F or less. (I'm a cold-weather guy.) |
Although it was -4C this morning with a 8km/h E wind, after having ridden as much as I have this fall, I no longer feel it necessary to call it cold, just cool. A slow ride in, my legs were half awake. Decided to try another head covering: light balaclava but an UnderArmor lycra skull cap underneath. At first, I thought it would not be enough and I was kicking myself for not bringing a warmer balaclava as a backup but after about 5-7 minutes, my body had warmed up and my head was nice and toasty.
It was +1C yesterday afternoon when I rode home, the first 20 minutes or so into a slight headwind. I decided to go naked (no balaclava, hat or any other head protection, just the helmet) and after about 5 minutes of feeling cold wind through the vents on my helmet, I was beginning to get a "brain freeze" headache. I slowed down and also, the next portion of the ride was in a bit of a wind-protected area so the headwind became negligible, resulting in the warming of my head and the elimination of the headache. I should carry even a light head covering so that I don't have to go through that again. |

We're considering moving to San Diego in the next year or so - how bike friendly is it down there, and how do you like it? Oh yeah - today was about 55 ish and FOGGY. |
Another head windy day. 3C with 40 gusting to 50 kph, though at ground level it didn't feel quite that strong. The geese seemed to get the worst of it as they were flying diagonally.
Last nights ride was very fast with no wind. Riding in the dark seems to give me a boost of energy. |
The ride home last night was rather brutal, with a stiff headwind/crosswind, the whole way home. It was also spitting rain off and on. The plus side of all this is that I only saw one rider going the other way, and one person walking on the MUP....had it all to myself!
Chilly this morning (~50f), but I had a nice sweat going by the time I got to work. The next couple of days are going to be a real test for me, lows in the upper 30s tomorrow, and near freezing on friday. I know that's not bad compared to some of you, but I'm an AZ native, and I hate the cold. |
Stayed up until 1 am watching election returns, so I slept in late this morning and drove to work. Needed the sleep and legs were tired anyway. Still adjusting to the time change and colder temperatures. Getting used to riding home in the dark again, and it is a little more stressful due to traffic.
|
Very quiet ride in this morning. I suppose it's because this is a government/political town and last night a lot of folks were up late.
|
I had some freezing rain/ sleet for a few minutes this morning. I don't suppose that bodes well for the trip back this evening. Worse, it promises evil for the car-based portion of my commute.
|
I didn't even consider riding in. It's been snowing all afternoon, with high winds. Tomorrow and Friday look good, and weekend looks great, high 50s to low 60s and sunny.
|
big 25 km/h headwind this morning, the good news is that I'll have a big 25 km/h tail wind tonight!
|
I gave the Pugsley a weighing with a digital fish scale tonight. With rack and fenders it came in at 42 lbs. Based on weights I found online I calculated that 9 lbs of that is just the tires and tubes.
As I was riding home this afternoon I thought it looked like it was going to rain. 15 minutes after getting home it started to pour. The Garmin Edge 500 I ordered arrived today, so I'll be able to see how fast I'm riding. I might get a cadence sensor, but for speed I'll just rely on GPS. |
Great day for riding. It's been a nice week so far.
