a little hairy this morning on the commute. i rode to a work location that i haven't biked to since before sandy hit and there were lots of areas on the MUP that were covered in sand and mud. sometimes i noticed them too late and just had to ride through them brakeless. there were a few moments of minor fishtailing. also i overdressed this morning and i'm a sweaty mess now.

Coolest day so far, -6C (22F) with a light wind. It was nice to start the ride with a slight glow in the eastern sky, first day since the time change because the previous days have been overcast.
Bundled up a bit more this morning but I think I didn't need to because my head and back were really sweating by the end of the ride. I used electrical tape to secure a plastic bag over my shoes this morning. My feet felt better but a couple of degrees colder and my toes would be cold again so I think I need to look at another solution such as more conventional winter shoes/boots and pedals with clips and straps. Oh, and, the forecast for Sunday, Nov 11, is nice and warm but unfortunately not a commuting day so I'll have to just go out for a ride to enjoy the weather. The forecasted low for the day is 4C above the average high for that day. |
27F this morning with freezing fog (that's a weather service term). Freezing fog? Good thing I didn't hit any

I enjoyed a different route today, stopping first at an early doctors appointment (clavicle fully healed, yay) and then continuing to work. Hills. I should have done more hills this summer.
I dressed lightly even though the mid-30's are normally pretty cold for me. Even so by the end I was overdressed - I think it must have warmed up 10 degrees during my appointment. It should be about perfect for the ride home tonight. |
Faced a strong and cold headwind the whole ride in.
|
Windy.
|
Cold, but I dressed for it, ride was sweet. In fact, riding in the cold can be big fun, if you dress correctly. ;)
|
Took my dog for a run last night and realized I had parked under a dripping eavestrough and got my shifter cable frozen, and was stuck in Alfine gear #3... as such I opted to drive to work today.
It's just as well - I have to pick up my winter bike and get it ready soon, and the Torino 76 is being decomissioned for the winter and getting some improvements, frame mods, and a new fork. |
I'm really enjoying the extra daylight for the morning commute. Rode fast this morning after taking the day off riding yesterday and made good time despite the cold temps (mid-30s). I had to ride fast because I dressed rather light for the morning temps since it's supposed to warm up to around 60 this afternoon. I was dressed just about right for the level of exertion and I hardly sweated.

The weather was great however other people commuting today really got in my way. On my way to class kept on having to troubles with cars at intersections with wanting to cut me off or wait for an invitation to turn. I then had an old man who decided to turn into the opposite lane(my lane) on his bicycle as a car in the other lane was passing, then finally got two groups of drivers who decided to block both lanes by stopping to chit chat to each other. Could of been worse but it was just one annoyance after another.

Coldest morning of the year so far. Thermometer at the house was reading right at freezing, although the 'official' temp was 35F. Not a bad ride in, the only annoyance is the one or two guards at the guardshack (we need ID to get into my workplace) who ask me to remove my mask so they can see my face. Like someone trying to get on would be that obvious about it.....
I think next time, I'm going to put the side stand down, get off the bike (recumbent), take my helmet off so I can completely remove the face mask, then put it all back on again, while the traffic behind me piles up..... :D I'm a bad man, though. |
this morning; lots of fog with temps in the middle/upper 30s. I had frost/ice on my gloves and jacket/chest.
Uneventful for traffic/incidents. I enjoy it. I like the daylight in the morning, I'm not into the dark ride home so much. My evening commute has me rubbing fenders with more cars than in the morning. I'm running three blinkies in back, two in front plus refelctive stuff everywhere - I'm still uncertain whether I am seen better in the dark, dusk, daylight. |
Drizzle, damp roads.
The cloud cover at least kept the overnight temp from dropping below mid 50's. |
No commute this morning for the fifth time since last march but I have a good reason, I have a pair of ticket for the Adam Cohen show tonight right after work , my shift ends at 8 pm

As I was riding home this afternoon I thought it looked like it was going to rain. 15 minutes after getting home it started to pour. The Garmin Edge 500 I ordered arrived today, so I'll be able to see how fast I'm riding. I might get a cadence sensor, but for speed I'll just rely on GPS. |
-2C with a tailwind about half the time. My new Garmin Edge 500 showed a trip average of 24kph. The total distance was in the ball park of what my other computers indicate less the underground part the GPS can't measure.
5-10cm of snow forecast for tomorrow starting mid-day. |
First subzero day of the year for me this morning. Actually, probably warmed up to just above by the time I was actually riding, but still. Will probably have to break out the true winter gear pretty soon.
|
Good day to ride. There was a guy waving a gun around outside a local casino which resulted in one of the main highways being closed. Cops eventually got bored and shot the guy, but one of my co-workers was 4 hours late for work as a result of this. I got to ride past the whole mess of course :-)

43F/6C Although not terribly cold I feel chilled riding in these days. Part of my issue is that I do either a run or gym workout before I commute, then getting on my bike for the ride in I am alreasy sweaty and just start to cool down.
But the ride was uneventful and pleasant as always. |
Great week for commuting, with nice weather every day. Rode each day except Wednesday, when I was recovering from staying up late to watch the election returns. Today is one of those days that is very tough to dress for with a 30-40 degree spread in temperatures between the morning and afternoon commutes. I opted for warmer clothes this morning and will probably sweat like a hog riding home. I know how to layer but my warm winter jackets and tights looked so appealing this morning when I saw the temp was 33 F.
|
The last couple of weeks mornings have been in the 50s F. So I've been wearing a long sleeve shirt over my T-shirt. This morning it was 66 F. Just a T-shirt.
|
good. was in a rush today and averaged 22km/h (14mph) on the ride into work, which is all uphill. can't wait for the ride home :D
|
a balmy 34F this morning - clear, big blue sky, hint of frost on the grass, an idyllic midwestern morning. I was slow - first time I've ridden two days in a row in a long time and my legs were tired. Work gets slow this time of year, mid November through December so I got to ride three days this week. It was a good week!

I now know that it's possible to transport (filled) mylar balloons by bicycle. A buddy's birthday is today, and I figured he needed some Spiderman and other assorted balloons to celebrate, so I stuffed four of them in a large trash bag, and then tied the drawstring to the rear rack.
Worked just fine as long as I kept my speed down. Kinda funny how much they deflated in the cold air (science!). |
-6C with a 30kph headwind for half the ride. First ride of the season that my water bottler started icing over. I was almost perfectly dressed except the tips of my thumbs and fore fingers were getting cold. Despite pedalling for 50 minutes my shirt was almost completely dry when I got to school. The snow started come down about 2/3rd the way in and there should be plenty on the ground for the ride home. I'll try running 8 or 9 psi in my fat tires for the trip home.
Were expecting 10cm today, 10 more tonight and 5-10 tomorrow, so I'll get to try my bike in some deep stuff. I put my car winter tires on last night, I tend to leave it to the last minute. I wanted to try my heart rate strap with my Garmin today. When I put the chest strap on it kept slipping off, I guess I really am losing some weight. My radbot1000 turned off by itself during my ride. It did the same thing last week but I thought the batteries were just low. I'll have to take it apart and see if the contacts lost their springiness. Today's ride puts me at 7,000km for the year. I'm less than 1,000km from last year's total distance. |
