41F light wind and rain. Wonderful ride.

tarwheel 02-16-12 07:00 AM

Bonus commute for me today. I had planned to drive because forecasters had been calling for heavy rains today, but they started backing off on those predictions last night and this morning. It wasn't raining when I got up, and the latest projections suggest the rain will largely be over by my afternoon commute, so I decided to go for it. Nice ride in this morning with moderate temps (low 40s) and not even a drop of rain so far. The traffic signals were even kind to me for a change and I had mostly green lights, so I made great time.

dcb23 02-16-12 07:08 AM

Reversed my commute route, interesting but lot more dark spaces on the way in. Otherwise a pleasant morning above 40.

I was off the bike for Mon-Tues of this week while I went up to West-central Florida for training for the Forest Service (where I work as a Comm Tech) and realized after I got there that I could have brought my bike and ridden in the afternoons. So Wednesday and today I was back on the Bacchetta for the ride to and from work. The weather is EXCELLENT, about 60 degrees in the morning and still, about 81 on the ride home yesterday with a breeze from the SSE, so I took the long way home (still only about 10 miles). Traffic has been light, and I still get thumbs up and friendly waves from the folks in the cages. Been really good lately!!!

Very nice morning commute with the temperature around 10 Celsius and a nice subtle tailwind; decided to take the long way to work so I can enjoy the seaside. Then on the return leg everything went belly up with a devilish headwind which totally drained me, along with some idiot drivers speeding on a section of road meant to be shared by cars and bikes and with a max speed of 40km/h (they were doing close to 100km/h).

You ride seaside in Greece to work? It just aint fair.

gecho 02-16-12 08:25 AM

Another nice ride at -13C.

I need to stop taking a shortcut through a new housing development in the afternoons until the ground dries out. On the way home Tuesday it was very wet and muddy. The unpaved section is only about 150 feet, but it was enough to cake my dérailleurs, brakes and chain with thick mud. So I spent the remainder of the ride home deliberately riding through puddles to try and clean some of it off. When I got home I gave the bike a quick dry cleaning using some snow.

well, my streak of 18 months and thousands of miles of riding flat-free ended this morning on my way into work :(

an inch long carpet tack was the culprit. it was my first field flat repair with my IGH bike. i'm glad i practiced at home several times because the process went very smoothly.

CommuteCommando 02-16-12 09:09 AM

Walked from the bus since I left the bike at work yesterday due to an un-forecast downpour. Planning on a longer ride this afternoon to make up, and run an errand.

More information needed: What kind of tires are you running? ;-)

i'm rolling schwalbe marathon winters on my winter beast right now, but over the past 18 months of flat-free riding i've regularly ridden 3 different bikes with different tire sets - ritchey tom slicks, vittoria rubino pro III's (2 sets), and conty sport contacts.

however, the carpet tack i rolled over would have gone through any conventional bike tire, even a marathon plus. slime or tire liners would have been the only things that might have stopped it, but i ain't gonna start rolling with slime or liners (too much added weight).

I used slime once, over thirty years ago. That tire blew. Weight schmweight. Yuck!

Mid-50's F and overcast. It rained all night, so I put my SKS race blades on for the puddles. As I'm here at work the forecast seems to be getting nicer and nicer (was originally supposed to storm all day) so I might be able to fit in a nice lunch ride, too.

HardyWeinberg 02-16-12 10:49 AM

37F and drizzly. Stopped to move a bunch of construction cones and a barrel out of the bike lane and into the shoulder to its right.

EKW in DC 02-16-12 11:27 AM

Nice ride in today, beating the rain. Encountered just a few sprinkles at the end. Still downright balmy for February... Temps in the low 40s for the morning commute.

Chalupa102 02-16-12 03:15 PM

It WAS a great commute this morning. 36F and mostly cloudy with no winds.

Unfortuately my velomobile is broke, so now I'm waiting for a ride home. After coming into the campus parking lot while heading to the bike rack, one of the jockey wheels on the rear derailleur came off. Thankfully it happened on campus and not 5, 10, or more miles away. I didn't know exactly what happened at first, so I attempted to continue riding. The chain kept skipping around, so I stopped and discovered the problem right away. I had to push it the rest of the way to the rack so I could lock it up. Due to the incident, I was a few minutes late to class. After class, I went to go look for what had come off. I was able to find the wheel, but couldn't find any of the other pieces that went along with it. My mom is currently on the way. I'm hoping my velo will fit into her Subaru Outback without too much issues.

FOG! dense fog but temps very comfortable. Broke out my reflective vest for an extra layer of visibility.

tarwheel 02-17-12 07:08 AM

Forecasters predicted heavy fog here but fortunately all we got was a few patches. Roads were still wet from all the rain we got yesterday but the skies were clear. I rolled the dice and rode yesterday despite the forecast for heavy rain because it wasn't raining in the morning and the models suggested the rain would be largely gone by my afternoon commute. Not! The rain really started coming down about the time I usually leave work, so I left 30 minutes late hoping it would let up. That didn't help much and I got thoroughly soaked in the first 5 miles of my ride home, then the rain let up, but it started again toward the end of my ride. Had to remove my glasses so I could see but otherwise it wasn't too bad except I'll have a lot of cleaning to do on my bike this weekend. I just got a new wheelset for my birthday and the new rims are filthy now after just four rides.

EKW in DC 02-17-12 09:33 AM

Whole have left an hour earlier this morning. There was still fog, which I like riding in, and the winds were calm. Instead, my beloved fog was gone, and the wind kicked up as a fairly strong headwind for my ride in to work. I even had to pedal down the "hill" (for lack of a better term) from the Washington Monument to maintain a 10-12 mph speed. Guess the early bird does get the worm.

Fortunately the wind is supposed to stay blowing from the same direction, do I should have a nice tailwind blowing me into the three day weekend! :-)

wphamilton 02-17-12 09:53 AM

Commute was awesome this morning. For the first time in months there was another bike at the rack, a nice Trek, no lock. I'm tempted to find out who it is and give him the combination of the lock I keep at the rack.

enigmaT120 02-17-12 10:33 AM

About 43 and misty at times, enough so that I let my riding goggle/glasses hang. Mist doesn't bug my contact lenses. I'm caling the morning a bonus, as there's a 90% chance of rain all day.

AdamDZ 02-17-12 10:36 AM

Warmest days in NYC so far, 40s in the morning, 50s in the afternoon, a little wet, but overall not so bad.

no motor? 02-17-12 12:52 PM

My commute was loud this morning! The Continental Town and Countries are a lot louder than the slicks I usually ride with, but that didn't bother me too much during my second commute of the year. I could get used to winters like this!

canyoneagle 02-17-12 12:59 PM

No ride for me today. My wife woke up with an intense abdominal pain, fortunately she's okay now. Gonna get in the cage for a brief appearance at the office this afternoon.

njschmidt 02-17-12 01:37 PM

High 40s/Low 50s *F, overcast but no rain. Another nice, but short, commute. Got some more time in running errands during my lunch break :). Fell 12 miles short of my weekly goal of 70 miles, though... Hopefully the thunderstorms will lay off next week so I can meet it next time.

My first time using my Ultrex Human Powered Machines Rain Poncho (I think it's actually a "rain cape," though), and I have to admit that I am very pleased with it. It seems lightweight, durable, and most importantly it kept me dry :).

weather is warm enough for commuting, very fine ride. hope the temperatures do not drop again.

vtjim 02-20-12 06:57 AM

Sunny, 16F/-9C, with a light headwind. Looks like I'll be able to ride the Soho more regularly because the roads are clear of salty goop. Traffic seemed really light, then I realized it's a holiday. (Not for us though.)

tarwheel 02-20-12 09:30 AM

We had our Blizzard of 2012 in NC last night, with the storm dumping 1" of white stuff. Temperatures were hovering at the freezing mark when I got up and there were lots of reports of accidents on the local roads. I had planned to drive but the roads were kind of icy even for that, so I worked from home a while and then rode my bike after all. The temperature warmed up quickly once the sun came out and the roads were fine, plus I made record time with a stiff tailwind the whole way.

Tractortom 02-20-12 09:47 AM

Presidents Day Monday...kids are out of school for today. Until today I had not realized how much of the morning traffic I deal with has to do with school kids. Traffic volume was down by about 75% today because of the school holiday. A bit colder today than it has been the last few weeks, was 56 when I got on the bike and the high is supposed to only get to 68 here in Okeechobee. But it was an EASY commute in today and should be fairly easy going home.
