I was a little smarter this time and put on the vinyl gloves I keep with my tools. I'm glad I patched my first tube after getting to school in the morning. I better head to the LBS to get some new rim tape. This loaner wheel from the LBS has been a real dud. Now if only Shimano will get off their asses and find me a 36 spoke Deore XT non-disc hub. Its been 8 months since my hub broke. |
Milestone: For 2012 I passed 1000 commuting miles today. The weather is so nice now that I'm seeing more of the old "regulars" out in the morning, although they probably don't recognize me on my road bike.
It's that time of year when we get pollen here. The kind of pollen that paints your bike yellow if you leave it out all day, yellow streets and yellow rivulets everywhere after a light rain. Someone asked this morning, and I realized that it doesn't bother me while riding - in fact I hadn't noticed at all. Maybe I'm acclimated from being out every day, or cycling somehow minimizes it. I don't know. |
For the first time since it got dark in the mornings I saw the early dawn lightening the sky on my ride in. Still 44F.

An uneventful ride this morning, though there was thick fog and even some mist. temps began in the mid 50s, and should get close to 80 by late afternoon. The only noteworthy item is that I think 2 of every 3 bikes that passed me this morning was a single speed. I guess the other noteworthy item is that there were lots of bikes out this morning, despite the fog. I expect my ride home this evening will be crowded, unless the weather gets worse :-)

Passed on riding today. I rode my MTB to work yesterday on a whim, and it took me a bit longer than my roadie I normally bring, but much nice ride and comfort on the rough roads. My whole day was spent walking in a field, so I was pretty well beat this morning. Took the truck.

A great morning commute on the new Coffee!
I used the Cyclemeter app on my iPhone for the first time this morning, and found out the commute on the home end of my trip is 1.77 miles, that my average speed (including a couple of stops at lights) was 8.4 mph, and that my top speed was 19.4 mph. I suspect I'll hit about 23 mph on the way home, barring a headwind, as the hills on the way home are more gradual and allow me time to build up speed. 23 mph will have my legs REALLY spinning fast, as top gear (3rd) is not as high as on my TriCross. The weather here in Chicago has been just fantastic for the last week or two. 80s almost every day up here. People at work keep saying: "We're gonna PAY for this." But for now, I'll enjoy it. I'm hoping my wife wants me to stop by the grocery store on the way home, so I can put some more miles on it and try it on the MUP. I'm hoping the pedestrians will be less irritating when I'm aboard this bike, compared to the TriCross. I'm loving the sprung seat, but I think I may still get a Brooks for it. Vented leather is ever so much nicer on the bum than vinyl. http://i134.photobucket.com/albums/q...s/83a1f0b2.jpg |
Is Pollen Gluten free?
I ended up Driving yesterday. I just couldn't Chew fast enough when pollen made it to 9300. Was down into the 5000's today and it was a super nice ride. Little warmer this morning but mid 70's for the ride home. |
This morning was my first t-shirt and shorts work commute. So much better than having to wear two to three layers of clothes to deal with sub freezing weather!

Awesome commutes today. 75F and sunny with mainly cross and some headwinds from the SSW @ 9-13mph this afternoon on the way to school. 62F and dark with mainly cross and some tailwinds from the SSW @ 8-11mph on the way home.
I pulled the windscreen/roof combo that I had on my velo and replaced it with a smaller windshield and a NACA duct in front yesterday. The humidity was pretty high but I was very comfortable on both commutes. The NACA duct definitely did it's job keeping me cool. Monday when I still had the roof on, I was dying from the heat and my shirt that I was wearing got completely soaked from sweat. I passed a guy this afternoon riding a road bike going the other way that I had seen on Monday. He mentioned that I was roofless as we passed and I told him that it was just too hot for it. I actually gained some speed from removing it. Besides that, added about 2 miles onto the ride home because I made a few stops to include one at Petco. |
Today traffic is suck here due by heavy raining.
|
Beautiful morning, warm nice, got an early start so traffic was light. the birds were singing. IMPD damn near ran over me in the bike lane. Just another wonderful morning.
|
Again a nice sunny warm morning (around 15 Celsius to reach 23) with light traffic. Reached my work so fast had enough time to pop by a local barber and get a haircut! Will be cycling home later on and from there will be headed up to the city center for some recreational cycling with a buddy of mine around the Acropolis and ancient sites in the Plaka district.

Easy ride in and the temps are still wonderful 57F (14C). Passed a shopping center that is usually deserted, except for the bakery guy. Today, there were a load of cars in the lot, so I was looking for runners in the dark, but didn't come across any, so maybe they detoured somewhere. Another new rider in the dark, who I always seem to be in front of or behind or miss, passed today as I was making a left turn. That bike has some very bright lights, back and front, but in the dark, you can never have too many lights.

Just started commuting less than a week ago. This morning was the first commute in in the dark. On the whole it went well. However, my Beamer3 is not nearly as bright as I thought it would be. I also saw two other commuters this morning as well.
|
The ride in this am was very nice, 54f I still needed a jacket though. At one point I got warm almost took it off and was glad I didn't. When I got near my work there is a water area and you could feel the cold coming off that area.
The weather is supposed to get in the 80f today with a west wind. It should be a very nice ride home. |
Warm ride this morning but extremely foggy. I had to stop and remove my eyeglasses after 1/2 mile because they were already useless at that point. The pollen is also very thick here, so I guess you could say we had heavy pog or follen this morning. I drove the past two days due to forecasts for heavy rain, thunderstorms, lightning, hail, etc. They were right about Tuesday, when we got a boatload of rain, but we didn't get a drop yesterday. So I went for a fast ride after work to get some miles in.

edit - I actually use two of the 600s. The pair of lights is mighty bright . . . |
Another easy commute today. 66 degrees when I left the house, a breeze from the east that will be a WIND this afternoon. Had an elderly woman in a brown four door pickup truck stop at the sign, look right at me and then pull across into my path today. It was early morning light, but plenty bright to see me, and my headlight was blinking. HE (SHE) WITH THE MOST MASS IS ALWAYS RIGHT....I grabbed brakes, swung around her and kept going, I guess it's time for another letter to the editor for the local paper. I really think that some folks look for cars and trucks but bikes (even with high intensity flashing lights) are invisible to them. Other than that, no problem, a fast and easy 8.25 mile commute.

+1C with an 11kph headwind and I was perfectly dressed. The wind didn't slow me down much and was actually kind of nice as I arrived at school completely dry despite pushing hard. The temperatures are supposed to be all over the place the next few days. Highs near 20C for today / tomorrow, then 4, back up to 20 then down to 6. I've started wearing my summer shoes, with rain covers on top in the mornings.
I'll have to start taking the long way to school. |
Another nice commute, although, 30 min later, and many more street lights on. I will have to figure that one out. Nice temps at 56F (13C), and the first full week in shorts and sleevless.
|
Due to baking obligations and life generally getting in my way, I had to commute by car this am. I am not a happy person this am!!
|
I'm finishing up taking a week off from bicycling. About once a year, I start disliking cycling and just stop riding. I guess I get tired of it or something, but then after taking a week or two off I'm back to normal. I'll be 59 this year and have bicycled for about 40 years (many of them just me and the bike, no car), so it doesn't bother me that this happens from time to time. I'll probably be back commuting this next week and will love it again and will wonder why I felt like stopping.
|
Warm morning commute but the pog (fog + pollen) was very thick again. I had to remove my eyeglasses at the 2/3 point in my commute in order to see. This is the earliest in the year that we have had pollen levels this high, but hopefully it will start tailing off pretty soon. It is nasty stuff, coating everything with a thick yellow powder that makes you feel dirty, makes your eyes itchy and causes allergies for many people.

14th commute of 2012 Today....Glad to be back at it. Rain and Fog with temps in the mid 50s. I don't mind the rain when it's above 50. :)
