Another hot beautiful spring day here in Athens, but my commute was far from easy... received a call from work concerning a IT emergency and sprinted to work in roughly 2/3 of the time I usually take, reaching the office in a distressed state from the heat and Friday traffic... Hopefully my evening commute back will be quieter!
BTW, the emergency... a device had run out of batteries! lol |
The commute to work this morning was sweet. Temps in the 60 going upward to 70. Bike feeling good, and just enjoying the ride. I started to take off.. ;)
|
How was the commute today? It was great :)
|
28F blinding sun very nice!
|
15 miles to work in just shy of 45mins!
Now no one wants to sit next to me, but it's cool. |
Been missing my bike commute the last week. Last Friday was not a great day. Somehow my chain broke and my front wheel tacoed. I wrote about it here. Upshot is I sprang for a wheel with an Alfine generator hub. I don't have any lights yet, but should have them before fall rolls around and I really need them on a daily basis again.
Wheel, chain, and a couple other minor items due to arrive next Monday, so just one more day not on the bike, I hope. |
What a good day, like nature apologizing for the previous week. 26 and clear but dark for my morning ride to Dallas. After I crested the ridge I hit fog and had to ride my brakes some on the down hill side. Still better than rain.
Then this afternoon it was about 50 degrees, sunny, with blue skies. I took my long route home on some pretty back roads south and west of Monmouth. I got passed by an ambulance and two fire trucks, don't know what that was about. 31 miles for the day. |
just got my first road bike and I rode a total of 7.92m, great weather here Valencia!

The bugs were bad on the way home at night. It has been warm here for a few weeks, and there's a lot of yellow pollen. I wonder if the rain all week attracted them. They were hitting my face, forehead, legs, and getting stuck in my hairy arms. I wonder if my headlight has anything to do with it. I would rather ride in the cold. If this continues, I'm going to have to avoid residential areas which is where they seem worse.
The pollen doesn't seem to affect me, well, except for my tires displaying a ring of yellow down the center. Someone told me that the pharmacies have run out of allergy medicines. I don't take medicines, so it really doesn't concern me. |
Awesome ride in. I took the extra long route and took my time. The temperature was perfect, the tires were properly inflated on the new trike, and the scenery wasn't bad. Surprisingly, the pollen isn't bothering me as much today.
I nearly got clobbered by a car and, in this case, it would have been my fault; thankfully he saw me in time. |
A good ride in at 52F (11C). There is supposed to be a dip in temps tonight and tomorrow, so back to chilly weather gear for the next couple mornings. Lost the first spoke of my rear wheel. I am sure it happened coming trhough one of the construction sites. They dig up the road and never put it back the same.

Wow EKW., that was one hell of a day for you....and the pics frm Metro confirm once again why I chose to become a bike commuter. Quiet ride in just getting back into the groove of it, nice temps, clight headwind, sun creeping up a bit again. |
Just a tad bit chilly. Very nice ride.

Nice ride in this morning with mild temps and wet roads but thankfully the rain appears to be gone finally. We must have gotten 3+ inches of rain over the past 4-5 days. My backyard has been too soggy to check the rain gauge so I won't know for sure until this afternoon. The weekend rides have been washed out for something like 6 out of the last 8 weekends. Actually, I got in a nice solo metric century on Sunday but all of my riding buddies wimped out. It was cloudy with skies that appeared threatening, but it didn't rain until right after I got home. That's one of the benefits of commuting is you get a lot tougher, plus I rode one of my fendered bikes so I wasn't too worried about the rain. My weekend riding friends act like they will melt if they get hit by a raindrop, and they bail out of rides at the first hint of rain.

Whew... 31F/-1C with a howling headwind, a steady 30+MPH blowing off Lake Champlain. Felt like a hill climb almost all the way in.
From the "share the road" department, I noticed a big flatbed rig hauling train wheels approaching an intersection from my right. He had a left turn signal on, to turn onto the street I was using. I put 2 & 2 together and realized he was going to need a lot of room to turn so I stopped far from the stop sign and waved him in. He waved back after he made his turn. He did need that room. |
I was actually chilled this morning. I usually wear gloves when it's around 50 and who cares if it looks wimpy but for some reason I didn't today. Otherwise we have sunshine again and I'm looking forward to a sunny ride home near 80 degrees.

40F, wind gusts of 20mph, and there was hail. Not fun.
|
after spending 4 hours on sunday rebuilding my road bike (it's been out of commission since last october when the drivetrain exploded out of the blue), i was all excited to get out on my speedy pony and experience that "go fast" rush for the first time in 6 months, but i woke up to light drizzle this morning, so i saddled up on my hybrid instead (fenders and wider tires for safer wet surface riding)
then when i got out there i had a 30 knot wind out of the NNE screaming off the lake @ my 11:00 o'clock. i haven't had a headwind like that in a while, i forgot how unpleasant that is for 15 miles. rain and wind, i hate you! |
Dark, 33 degrees, foggy. Nice ride. I think I'll take another long route on the way home, if it doesn't start raining.

Dry sky, but wet roads. Back on the bike after three whole weeks off due to various ailments. No more excuses.

30 degrees and 15 mph headwind, riding in to work this morning. It should be about 39 degrees on my way home. :(
It was 70 degrees yesterday! |
Absolutely beautiful ride home. Just nice. Back down to 30's in hte morning. love Indiana.

Ride in was chilly--early April weather instead of the May we've been having. Going home was more interesting: Headwind of 30 mph gusting to backwards and occasional driving rain. On the Minneapolis Greenway, going into the teeth of the wind, I got a particularly strong gust under a bridge. I did the math--with the wing walls making a convergent / divergent nozzle, and the Venturi effect created in that section of the trench, and taking into consideration the atmospheric density at our elevation, there's a good chance my airspeed was Mach 1, even though my ground speed was Just 1. I might have got the decimal off by a place or two, but probably not.
Besides, I hit 3000 miles since my return to commuting last May, so it was all good. |
Sucked. 40 degrees with wind and pouring rain, all day. One of those days where you just buckle down and make it happen. Bummer deal is that is the forecast for all week!!!
